Wild Frontiers offers a range of fascinating journeys, with something to suit everyone! Some of our safaris will offer a little adventure – but with the perfect mix of relaxation and comfort. Our friendly staff have a wealth of experience and look forward to designing your ideal safari. We can tailor-make just about anything – including multi-destination itineraries.

Some of our more popular options are detailed in this brochure. Full itineraries are available on request, or visit – www.wildfrontiers.com

Since 2007 we have given you the opportunity to travel in an environmentally conscious manner by contributing to the Wild Frontiers’ Travel Forest. This is an initiative whereby we plant indigenous trees to offset the carbon emissions produced when you fly on holiday. Whilst this is the primary motivation for planting the trees, the project also works as a poverty alleviation scheme and aims to combat environmental degradation. We all know that trees play a positive role in the world environment, and by adding indigenous trees to the environment, you are not only counterbalancing some of the damage done to the world through travelling, you are helping to alleviate poverty and increase biodiversity.

Meet the TeamWild Frontiers was established in 1991 by John and Debbie Addison, as a Specialist Tour Operation offering safaris into East, West and Southern Africa. Our passion for Africa has been passed on to our staff. We have 23 dedicated staff members in our Johannesburg office, as well as representatives scattered around South Africa. Their task is to ensure that you and your guests enjoy the perfect holiday! We have operations in both Uganda and Tanzania, further demonstrating our long-term commitment to East Africa in particular.

Some of the itineraries contained in this mini-brochure are organised by partner companies who have a long track record of providing excellent tours around the world. These include trips to Himalayas, China, Pakistan, South America, Morocco and Europe.

John AddisonWas probably born in the wrong century...an avid explorer, with a great understanding of the history of the African continent, he still revels in discovering new places and sharing them with our guests. He has a passion for wildlife and having guided safaris throughout East, West and Southern Africa, he has plenty of ‘fire-side’ tales to share. John is also the initiator of the annual Kilimanjaro Marathon and Victoria Falls Marathon.

Debbie AddisonBorn and educated in England, but has spent the greater portion of her life in Africa. With a solid background in marketing and a love of the bush, it seemed a natural step to start Wild Frontiers. She has travelled extensively in Africa, continually searching for new and

exciting places – favourite places are the Okavango, Mana Pools and Serengeti – plus horse-riding on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and in the Mavuradona, Zimbabwe.

Linda WillemseWhether paragliding, rock climbing, cycling or hiking, Linda is happy just as long as there’s nature and adrenaline involved. She has travelled Africa from the Cape as far north as Ethiopia and West to Ghana, ‘done’ Peru’s Amazon & Inca Trail, hiked & glided Europe’s mountains, lived in the Namib Desert and explored Bali on a motorcycle. The travel industry has been her passion for over 12 years and she still loves it!! Linda’s your contact for any regional marketing and sales.

Corne DuvenageThe ‘mountain nut’ in the office has summited Kilimanjaro many times! He’s also summited Margherita Peak in the Rwenzoris (Mountains of the Moon in Uganda), and done extensive hiking in the Himalayas. He generally conducts the information evenings at our offices. He is an avid diver and loves adventure and adrenaline! Corne is responsible for creating new, innovative and keenly-priced safaris to suit our Wild Frontiers product range.

The rest of the gang...Are an enthusiastic, passionate bunch who just love designing safaris! Often adding a personal touch to a trip and always going the extra mile. Any one of our consultants will happily help you plan your perfect safari or hiking holiday. They often work long hours to ensure the job is done properly and will meet with guests after hours when required. Team building activities to keep the adrenaline going include things like blindfold quad biking, fly fishing, horse-riding, archery and rafting.

Tanzania is a country of contrasts, from the highest peak in Africa, Kilimanjaro, to the endless plains of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, a microcosm of Africa. The beaches are beautiful, with warm waters lapping on to golden sands, and offering a range of hotels and lodges spanning from the intimate boutique style to larger resort establishments.

The Serengeti is home to the world’s largest movement of mammals – the wildebeest migration. Imagine the sight, sound and smell of being surrounded by literally thousands of wildebeest as they purposefully migrate in search of grazing. It’s a spectacle that you will never forget. To the south of the country you can discover the largest game reserve in Africa – Selous, or visit Katavi, Ruaha and Mikumi National Parks. Or for those who prefer a more active safari, we recommend visiting Mahale Mountains or the Chimpanzee sanctuary at Gombe Stream or where Jane Goodall continues her research into our closest relatives. Complete your safari with a few days relaxing on the island of Zanzibar, soaking up the sun, or diving the coral reefs that surround the island.

Family Safaris / Single Parent SafarisAnother pioneering concept, we have designed a range of tours to both the coast and on safari which are perfect for families. The lodges/hotels chosen have a great range of safe, fun, educational, organised activities for kids during the day, and baby sitting services at night – giving YOU time to relax and enjoy yourself. All of the activities welcome parents too – so you can experience the joy of discovering with your young explorers. Activities range from water-sports and coral reef exploration to Masai culture and traditional hunting techniques, fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving, as well as general games and sports – not just crèches and “kiddies clubs”!

For single parents too, these trips allow a perfect blend of relaxation and discovery with your children.

16

TanzaniaWide open plains covered with game, proud tribal warriors, snow-capped mountains, white sandy

beaches, dark forests and deep lakes – real Africa. With a large portion of its area dedicated to the

conservation of flora and fauna,Tanzania is a place for true nature lovers and people who appreciate

wild places.

Wild Frontiers now have offices and an operations base in Arusha, and can arrange your stay anywhere…

at some of the best lodges in Africa, or if you prefer, remote campsites. Travel may be on foot, horse-

back, safari vehicle, by boat, balloon, charter plane or dhow.

East and Central Africa

The Migration ExplainedThe following should be used merely as a guideline when planning your trip to the Serengeti or Masai Mara – game viewing, as in nature is unpredictable and similarly, cannot be guaranteed!

Jan / Feb / March – wildebeest are in the southern plains of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation area. Calving takes place; open grasslands; great visibility of animals.

April / May – rainy season in East Africa, great if you don’t want to go at a busy time. Rains usually occur as afternoon storms, rather than continuous downpours. Good low season rates available in BOTH Kenya and Tanzania. Game viewing and photography is generally excellent.

June / July – game moving northwards within the Serengeti, through the ‘Western Corridor’ of the Serengeti as well as up into the Lobo area. Crossing of the Grumeti River.

July / Aug – crossing over the Mara River into neighbouring Kenya. Note that a good portion of game remains in the Serengeti all year round.

Sep / Oct – dry season, generally big herds up in the Mara, but it is peak season! Resident game in the Serengeti ecosystem, still great game viewing.

Nov / Dec – game starting to move southwards back into the Serengeti, through the central region (Seronera), to commence the whole process again.

REMEMBER – there is excellent game viewing in both Kenya and Tanzania all year round.

The following selection are merely a few of the safaris we offer. We have highlighted some of the more popular places, but can, of course, combine any number of destinations to plan your perfect trip!

Serengeti & Ngorongoro Wilderness Camp Fly-in Safari, 8 daysImagine spending your nights in complete comfort, away from the crowds, in the heart of the bush! If you enjoy the thrill of staying in ‘real’ Africa, in a small, comfortable tented camp, then this is the choice for you! A classic tented safari, and one of our personal favourites!

Day 1 From Johannesburg fly to Kilimanjaro. On arrival met and transferred to your hotel, overnight.Day 2 After meeting your safari guide, travel on good roads from Arusha to the foothills of the Rift Valley, stopping to shop at Mto wa Mbu for curios, before continuing to the highlands of Ngorongoro via the pretty town of Karatu. Overnight Ngorongoro Wilderness Camp.Day 3 We descend into the crater caldera, some 700 metres below the camp, for a day’s game viewing. It is likely you will see four of the big five today! The scenery is spectacular, and Ngorongoro is a microcosm of Africa. Overnight Ngorongoro Wilderness Camp.Day 4 From Ngorongoro, via Olduvai Gorge, to Serengeti. A memorable day including visiting a Masai Village, Olduvai Gorge and on to the ‘endless plains’ of the Serengeti, arriving at our Serengeti Wilderness Camp in the heart of the bush.

Available either as a scheduled or private safari. We offer this in two different styles – staying in lodges and permanent tented camps, or ‘adventure’ camping.

Serengeti Walking SafariIf you prefer to spend time out of the vehicle and on foot, this new option is perfect for you! We offer this package to small groups: a walking safari, fully backed up by our support crew in the heart of the Serengeti. The cool mornings and afternoons are spent walking in wilderness areas of the Serengeti, with mobile camps being erected each night by our support crew. We then walk for four days with Masai guides and donkeys from the highlands of Ngorongoro, via the active volcano Ol Donyo Lengai to Lake Natron – famous for the breeding flocks of flamingoes often seen tingeing the edges of the water pink! The scenery is simply breathtaking. A great combination of game viewing, walking and cultural interaction.

Selous Game ReserveAfrica’s largest protected area uninhabited by man. At 55 000 square kilometres it is almost four times the size of the Serengeti. The Selous is considered important enough to be a World Heritage Site, in which a lucky few can experience a safari in absolutely wild and unspoiled bush. The park varies from rolling grassy woodlands and plains, to rocky outcrops cut by the Rufiji River.

Ruaha National ParkSecond only to Katavi in its aura of untram-meled wilderness, but far more accessible, Ruaha protects a vast tract of the rugged, semi-arid bush country that characterises central Tanzania. Its lifeblood is the Great Ruaha River which attracts a variety of game particularly in the dry season. The park has abundant cheetah, lion and leopard as well as both Striped and Spotted hyena, and several conspicuous packs of highly endangered African wild dog. A checklist of 450 birds have been recorded in this park. As well as enjoying game drives, you can go on guided day walks and trails over several days.

Selous Game Reserve & Ruaha, Luxury Tented Fly-in Safari, 8 daysOnly a few quality camps are dotted along its northern boundary and they offer the visitor a lovely retreat away from the more crowded northern areas of Tanzania. Here you may enjoy walks, a boat cruise on the Rufiji River, and of course game drives. Spend three nights in the Selous, and combine with three in Ruaha and enjoy some of the best game viewing in Africa.

Selous Safari & Zanzibar Beach Escape, 10 daysIf you like the idea of spending time in the bush, and on the beach – then this is the ideal mix! A fly-in safari spending four nights in Selous at a top quality camp, followed by 4 nights on Zanzibar – relaxing next to the warm Indian Ocean waters! Aaah…bliss!

Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge, 8 daysThe chimpanzees of Gombe Stream have been habituated for many years, and tracking is relatively easy. Part of the Jane Goodall Institute, these chimpanzees are funded by donations as well as tourism in the area. Enjoy a few days in Gombe, and complete your safari with time spent on the beautiful Tanzania coastline at Lazy Lagoon Island.

Katavi National Park, 8 daysKatavi is one of the remaining true wilderness areas left in Africa. Uninterrupted plains, dotted with huge herds of buffalo and wilde-beest, in a remote corner of Tanzania. Camps are ‘seasonal’ and you fly into this park, as access is difficult. Only open during the dry season, this is definitely a place for people who truly love the wild.

Kilimanjaro & Mount MeruIf you are keen to hike or climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, then refer to the pages on hiking for more detail.

The Tanzania CoastTanzania has hundreds of kilometres of unspoilt beaches just waiting to be discovered and is the perfect place to unwind and relax after an exciting safari. A beach holiday in Africa offers the traveller that increasingly rare commodity – long stretches of pristine, desert-ed beach, warm blue seas and an opportunity to experience peace and tranquility.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar Archipelago – The Spice IslandThe islands of Zanzibar offer some of the best resorts in the world, and activities include snorkelling, diving, dolphin watching, cycling, as well as exploring the intricate maze that makes up the old Stone Town. We have a small selection of our tours to Zanzibar within this brochure, but please remember that we can tailor-make anything in the region – just tell us the type of holiday you would like, and we will do the rest! We have also successfully run conferences on Zanzibar, and it’s a great place for a company incentive. It is the perfect location for a honeymoon, or even the wedding itself! We can even arrange the full wedding ceremony in the most idyllic location on earth!

We suggest that a visit to Zanzibar should include some time on the beach, as well as a night or two in Stone Town to soak up the culture, atmosphere and to do some shopping and sightseeing. Any style of hotel can be combined, whether you prefer the small boutique hotels and lodges, or the larger resorts which offer first class facilities and many activities on site.

Wild Frontiers has been taking guests to Zanzibar and neighbouring islands Pemba and Mafia, plus the Kenya and Tanzania coasts, for almost 17 years. Our staff offer first hand experience on a large selection of hotels and lodges – from the small, secluded beach hideaways to the larger resort hotels with loads of amenities – over 50 in total – so we will have something to suit you! For the more active person we offer cycling tours, diving, swimming with dolphins, or an array of cultural and historical sightseeing excursions.

The main island of the Zanzibar archipelago (Unguja) is 85 kilometres long and between 30–35 kilometres wide, surrounded by a coral reef and sandy beaches lined with palm trees and tropical forests. The temperatures range from 22 to 32 degrees celcius and the island may be visited virtually all year round. There are daily flights to Zanzibar from South Africa and Kenya, and any length of trip can be designed. We recommend a minimum of two days to explore the Stone Town, and do some sightseeing including a spice tour, a trip to Chumbe Island Marine Park or a city tour before heading to the coast to relax on the beach.

A selection of our preferred hotels and lodges follow, with sample itineraries for your consideration.

Zanzibar Stone TownWander through the maze of narrow alleys that make up Stone Town; beautifully carved doors, antique shops, street vendors selling coconut and pineapple drinks, bookshops and the nightly market with curios and local foods for sale. Dinner at 236 Hurumzi Tower Top Restaurant (old Emerson’s) is an incredible experience – relax “Arabian-style” while a series of sumptuous courses are served. The hotels in Stone Town are of typical ‘Zanzibari’ style – a blend of Persian, Arab and African combined with modern facilities. Antique furnishings including 4-poster beds draped with mosquito nets offer an air of timelessness. Hotels range from small family run concerns, to larger establishments able to cope with groups of up to 150 persons.

Zanzibar ItineraryThe following is to merely give you an idea of a one week itinerary, any number of days/nights may be spent in whichever accommo-dation style you choose.

Day 1 Fly from Johannesburg to Zanzibar (direct or via Dar es Salaam). Met and transferred to your Stone Town hotel. Spend one or two nights here with breakfast included. Opportunity to do spice tour, city tour or other excursion.Day 2/3 From Stone Town transferred to your chosen “beach hotel”. We suggest a minimum of 3–5 nights to be able to relax and enjoy everything on offer!Days 6–8 Return transfer to airport, or back to Stone Town for some additional shopping!

Zanzibar Mountain Bike SafarisZanzibar, with its pristine beaches, ancient history, Arab dhows and friendly people, is a mountain bikers’ paradise. The roads are reasonable and distances between areas are short and easily covered. With its highest point at 90 metres above sea level, gradients are minimal.

Guest houses and hotels used on this itinerary are generally basic, clean and in good areas. Meals are normally fresh seafood or chicken dishes, cooked the local way – mild curries, grills, poached in coconut milk – all with a touch of Zanzibari spices. We pre-book all accommodation and supply maps and information on the local conditions and a backup vehicle if required.

PEMBA ISLAND

Located North of the main island of Zanzibar, Pemba is world renowned for its spectacular dive sites and snorkelling. There are only a small selection of lodges on the island, and they offer a wonderful retreat from the busier mainland. Access is normally by air.

Diving around PembaThe ocean floor drops to 800 metres relatively close to the shore and offshore waters are rich in large game fish like Marlin, Barracuda and shark. It is on the whale migration route at the end of August/September and whale sharks can be seen from December to April.

On the West coast of Pemba there are a variety of dive sites for the novice and the more advanced diver. The Pemba wreck is located in the south in 15 metres of water. The east coast is strictly for advanced divers with very fast drift dives. Tiger, Mako and Hammerhead sharks are in abundance.

MAFIA ISLAND

To the south of Zanzibar, Mafia is a little paradise known only to few. It is – in the true sense – an island retreat for the adventure divers, game fishermen or some simple ‘feet-up’ relaxation. Only 70 miles south-east of Dar es Salaam, the island was a regular stop for Arab and Persian dhows plying the coastal waters from Somalia to Mozambique from the 12th century.

Chole Bay, Mafia’s protected deep-water anchorage, is part of a marine park. Its natural horseshoe shape is studded with lovely beaches. The diving here is amongst the most spectacular in the world and includes colourful coral gardens, walls at various levels and many shelves and coral heads. Smaller islands and reefs are

2008/9 WF Brochure.05b.indd 10 8/5/08 6:25:04 PM

11

within easy reach for drift diving, excellent snorkelling and sight-seeing. The warm, clear, protected waters of the bay are ideal for swimming and sailboarding. Access is by air.

A few of our preferred hotels are listed below. We have given them a ‘grading’ to help you select your preferred choice.

The Manta Resort – Pemba Elevated and crafted along an idyllic island beach, The Manta Resort offers privacy, romance, adventure, and water sports on East Africa’s finest island sanctuary. Life on Pemba revolves around the ocean tides, and as the day progresses you will witness the ever-changing colours and shades of blue and green as the tide ebbs and flows. Accommodation is available in 3 different room types – the luxury sea front villas with a secluded sun terrace, the garden rooms with views of the sea between the foliage (an excellent choice for families or larger groups – with inter-leading doors) and the cottages of the Village – nicely set in the gardens and all with views overlooking the Pemba channel.

Fundu Lagoon – Pemba Fundu Lagoon is a remote and peaceful resort, only accessible by boat. Set on a beautiful beach in the south west of Pemba Island, it is privately owned and run with a love for the natural environment that surrounds it; the epitome of shabby chic – stylish, cosseting and totally relaxed. Wooden walkways and sandy paths lead to sixteen Makuti thatched tented rooms and suites – all accommoda-tion is spacious and private with breath-taking ocean views. Fundu Lagoon’s main areas are open-sided with thatch roofing. There are three bars, an excellent restaurant, a beautiful infinity pool and a calming spa.

Kinasi Lodge – Mafia Kinasi is a small, private lodge situated in a coconut and cashew plantation facing Chole Bay on Mafia Island. Kinasi is beautifully furnished with antiques and handcrafted furniture. There is tranquillity and privacy in beautiful, natural surroundings, and the friendly staff will do their best to look after you with services to your room, morning tea and coffee with fresh biscuits and cakes, sundowners and cocktails, delicious food and attention to any request you may have. Accommodation at Kinasi is provided in separate cottages that are widely spaced for total privacy.

ZANZIBAr MAINLAND (UNGUJA ISLAND)

Mnemba Island Mnemba Island Lodge is situated on an exclusive island just 4.5 kilometres off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar in the azure Indian Ocean. Each of the 10 secluded bandas has a spacious verandah and is hidden in the shade of a tropical beach forest. A palm-covered walkway leads to an en suite bathroom with shower and basin.Thatched dining and sitting / bar areas have beautiful open views of the beach and spectacular coral reefs beyond.

Bawe Tropical Island Elegantly lying 5 miles off Zanzibar Stone Town (30 minutes by boat), Bawe Tropical Island is an island no bigger than a football pitch! Its 15 magnificent cottages are discretely scattered along the beach line, all of them with panoramic views of the clear waters of the Indian Ocean, ensuring maximum privacy and seclusion.

Changuu Private Island Paradise Changuu Private Island Paradise (Prison Island) has been described as “a small Paradise on Earth”, with its private white beach surrounded

by the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean. You arrive there by traditional dhow, a 20-minute journey from Stone Town. For the most romantic breakaway, the 15 exclusive cottages built on the north-west of the island offer an unrivalled, luxurious experience; and on the south-west side of the island, the former Quarantine Area built in 1931 has been converted into 12 elegant sea facing rooms. The island is also known for its giant tortoises.

Shooting Star Shooting Star Lodge is a small, relaxed, family-run hotel, located on the eastern side of the exotic East African Island of Zanzibar. It overlooks the beautiful fine white sands and coconut palms of Kiwengwa beach, and is surrounded by lush tropical gardens. Accommodation is built to a high standard in traditional Zanzibari style with white lime washed walls, high-beamed ceilings and large windows. The Sea View Cottages all contain beautifully hand-carved wooden Zanzibari beds draped with tailored mosquito net canopies.

Bluebay Beach Resort Bluebay Beach Resort is situated on the north-east coast in an area known as Kiwengwa. Its bedroom cottages overlook verdant gardens, the pool, more than 1 000 beautiful palm trees, and the sparkling white beach. The resort offers 80 Superior rooms, 6 Deluxe rooms and 2 Sultan rooms, all of which enjoy magnificent views of the Indian Ocean.

Ras Nungwi On the northern-most peninsula of Zanzibar Island, Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel overlooks a sparkling expanse of iridescent Indian Ocean. The lush gardens drop down onto one of the finest and most unspoilt beaches on the island, which in turn is fringed by a wide and thriving coral reef. Infused with the laid-back, exotic yet ultimately natural spirit of Zanzibar, this is the place to relax and enjoy all that this extraordinary part of the world has to offer. About Mountain GorillasThese great apes only reside in the corner where Rwanda, Uganda & DRC meet, with a small population of around 700 remaining, they are highly endangered. Their cousins, the lowland gorillas, are found in DRC, Gabon, Cameroon & Congo with much healthier populations in existence.

Tracking Mountain Gorillas is an incredible experience…walking through rugged jungle terrain, ducking under thick branches and crossing muddy streams, until your guide brings you face to face with a family of gorillas. These gentle creatures spend a large portion of their day eating, with the youngsters often playing and swinging in the trees, and you will be able to sit quietly and watch them interact with each other. The Silverback (dominant male) can be quite imposing at times, but he is merely exercising his authority with his family group – and of course the human visitors! You will spend an hour in close proximity to these fascinating apes, before retracing your steps back through the deep forest to your lodge.

The Great Lakes region is undoubtedly one of the most diverse areas in Africa. Uganda has a wealth of primates, over 1 000 bird species with 27 endemics. Good game viewing includes Uganda Kob, Giant Forest Hog, Forest & Cape Buffalo, as well as a healthy population of lion, leopard, elephant and antelope – it also boasts some of the largest Nile crocodiles you will ever see!

Uganda is made up of dramatic mountains – the Rwenzoris are permanently ice-capped – lush green hillsides, dark forests full of birds and primates, enormous lakes and rivers, dormant volcanoes, and open plains dotted with game. For the fishermen there is the challenge of catching Nile Perch.

Meet up with your guides and set off into the deep forest in search of the Mountain Gorillas. Once located you will be privileged to spend an hour with a gorilla family before returning to your lodge. Sometimes the trekking can be quite tiring, due to the altitude and slippery paths. Overnight lodge Bwindi / Rwanda.Day 5 Second gorilla tracking (optional) or forest walk. Afternoon drive from Bwindi to Ishasha tented camp, Queen Elizabeth National Park.Day 6 Spend the day in the Ishasha area enjoying game drives, looking for the tree-climbing lion, leopard, and herds of buffalo, kob and elephant.Day 7 Another day in Queen Elizabeth National Park, enjoying a boat cruise and possibly tracking chimpanzees in Chamburu Gorge. Game drives and boat cruise included.Day 8 Return to Entebbe via Kampala markets and stalls and the equator! Fly out tonight, or add an extra night in either Entebbe, Kampala or Ngamba Island.

We also have a scheduled 4-day Chimp Encounter which may be added to the above safari, spending time in Kibale Forest where you will enjoy a chimp walk, and overnight on Ngamba Island.

Gorilla Express, 6 daysThis short safari allows you time to track gorillas once or twice, and also enjoy a night in Lake Mburo National Park and a boat trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria. Regular scheduled departure dates are available throughout the year.

The Ultimate Uganda Safari, Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth National Park & Murchison Falls, 12–15 daysThis really does take in the best of Uganda! We spend time exploring the pristine national parks, as well as ample opportunity to track gorillas and chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Included in this safari is a cruise on the Nile River, to the foot of Murchison Falls, and a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel in QENP – with plenty of game viewing along the way.

Purely Primates, Uganda & Rwanda, 8 daysVisit the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda. This safari optimises time for gorilla trekking – allowing up to three treks in total in BOTH Rwanda and Uganda. There is also time for forest walks, and this trip can be extended to include game viewing.

Bird-watching Safari, 12 – 15 days With over 1 000 bird species, including most of the 27 Rift Valley endemics it is fast becoming a popular destination for African birding. We can tailor-make any length of safari, but our 12–15 day trip is designed for general birders who are keen to see a possible 400 plus species including some of the Albertine Rift endemics.

Nile Perch Fishing, Lake Victoria & Murchison FallsFishing for Nile Perch is incredible. This is the world’s largest fresh water game fish, with specimens of over 250 pounds (well over a 100 kilograms) having been taken in the rapids below the Murchison Falls. As all fishermen know, it’s often not just the fish but the location that makes it special – the rock ledges and spurs below the falls, the huge, deep, fast river, and the dense riverine forest at your back – as well as the wildlife in the area that make this a classic spot for only the few dedicated anglers who come here. The fishing here is restricted to 6 persons per day, adding to the exclusive experience – and must be booked in advance. Best times are January – March, and mid June to early November.

Rwanda, Primates… and more primates….Rwanda is ideal for those short of time, and great as an option to add on to a Kenya or Uganda safari. The area was made famous by Diane Fossey, who spent many years of her life on the quest to save Mountain Gorillas from extinction due to poaching. Enjoy gorilla tracking in the Virungas, or you can also track Golden Monkeys in these mystical forests. Lake Kivu is an interesting place to visit, and Akagera National Park offers a place of peace and wilderness with little tourist traffic.

The Camps

Karen Blixen Camp offers the authentic “yesteryear” experience for visitors wishing to gain that little extra from their safari. Set on the banks of the Mara River the camp consists of 22 luxurious tents on large mahogany platforms with private verandahs. The location is spectacular, with the great Mara plains behind the camp and the impressive escarpment and Mara River in front. Throughout the day game comes to drink from the river. The tents are tastefully furnished, and the camp facilities include a restaurant, a bar, and a swimming pool, as well as wellness treatments offered by the resident masseuse.

Kichwa Tembo is in the west of the Masai Mara, located high on a ridge on the edge of riverine forest. The luxury tents are stylish and spacious with twin beds and en suite bathroom. A swimming pool is available to cool off in, with some of the best views in Africa. Morning and afternoon game drives are conducted in specially designed open vehicles.

Siana Intrepids Camp is situated in the south eastern corner of the Masai Mara, on the edge of the game reserve. This shady, tranquil, tented camp recaptures the spirit of Kenya’s early pioneers. Enormous trees provide shade for all the tents and a dip pool in this exclusive camp – each tent has an en suite bathroom and traditional Kenyan furnishings. Bush walks, night drives and hot air ballooning are also available at an extra cost.

Mara Intrepids Camp straddles the migration ‘corridor’ at the confluence of the Masai Mara’s main game-viewing areas. The camp comprises 30 tents divided into four very private areas, each with its own elegant ‘mess tent’ and secluded riverside viewpoints. The raised tents present a picture of old-world elegance, with giant four-poster beds and handsome mahogany furniture offset by modern en suite bathrooms and luxurious amenities. Internationally

trained chefs prepare delectable al fresco dishes to order. Activities include walking safaris outside the reserve, day and night game drives, or a visit to the local neighbours in their manyattas. Dawn balloon safaris can also be arranged.

Governors Camp – the first tented camp to be established in the Masai Mara and possibly the best known, is situated in the west of reserve. The 38 tents, keeping the authentic, traditional safari atmosphere, are set amongst the trees along the Mara River and have uninterrupted views over the plains. All have en suite bath-rooms and gas and paraffin lamps are used for lighting.

Mara Porini Camp has recently been set up in the exclusive wildlife conservancy of Ol Kinyei, one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and less than 18 kilometres from the Masai Mara park boundary. Porini Camp has just 6 guest tents and is sited along the banks of the Laetoli. The tents are spacious, have solar electric lights, and an en suite bathroom with flush toilet and bush shower.

Rekero Camp nestles in a riverine forest close to the confluence of the Talek and Mara rivers and is ideally located for the annual migration from the Serengeti through the Masai Mara. Open on a seasonal basis (closed April, May & November) it caters for up to 16 guests in 6 double, twin or triple-bedded en suite safari tents. Solar lanterns and kerosene lamps are provided in each tent.

Olonana Safari Camp is an elegant tented camp positioned right on the Mara River just outside the Masai Mara Reserve’s western boundary. This location enables the lodge to offer the best of both worlds – night drives and walking safaris as well as day time game drives within the reserve. The 12 spacious bush pavilions have queen size beds with an en suite bathroom. This exclusive camp allows you to dictate the pace of your safari.

There are a great many more lodges and camps in the Masai Mara, but the above are a few of our personal favourites. For large groups or even corporate travel, there are permanent lodges that are suitable at very reasonable rates.

Kenya Golf Safari at the Great Rift Valley Lodge, 5 days This short package is great as an extension to a longer safari to the region, or as a short breakaway trip.

The Great Rift Valley Lodge is perched on the side of the Eburu Escarpment, overlooking Lake Naivasha and the sweeping floor of the world’s largest valley. It has a world class golf course, some lovely walks, pristine bush and also hosts a children’s Explorers Club. Nearby horse riding and mountain biking trips are available and one can visit the world-famous bird reserves on the shores of lakes Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru. Kenya CoastThe Kenya coast offers unbeatable value, beautiful palm-fringed sandy beaches and lots of optional activities including snorkelling, diving, fishing and lots more. Most people arrive at the coast in Mombasa, the largest port in East Africa. Mombasa is an island which is linked to the mainland by ferry. It is well worth setting aside the time to explore this ancient trading center, either on an organised tour from your beach hotel or on your own.

Kenya’s most popular and developed beaches are Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu to the north and Shelly, Tiwi and Diani to the south. Other attractions on the south coast are Shimba Hills National Reserve and Wasini Island. The coast north of Shanzu Beach is less developed for tourism and the resorts of Watamu and Malindi are more low-key than those around Mombasa.

We have put together a variety of one week packages to Mombasa or Malindi which can be used as a stand alone beach holiday package or as an extension to a Kenyan safari. There are daily flights to Kenya and regular connections to the coast. Malindi departures are offered daily via Nairobi.

Mombasa ItineraryDay 1 Depart from Johannesburg to Mombasa. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your selected beach resort. Accommodation here for 7 nights.Day 8 Early morning transfer to Mombasa Airport for your return flight on Kenya Airways to Johannesburg.

Malindi & Mombasa Itinerary – Daily departuresDay 1 Late evening departure on Kenya Airways from Johannesburg to Malindi or Mombasa, via Nairobi. LAMU ISLAND

Ethiopia

Northern Historic RouteThis is the most popular circuit for those visiting Ethiopia – the ‘Cradle of Mankind’. Visit the enchanting castles in Gondar; the imposing obelisks at Axum and the incredible, rock-hewn churches around Lalibela. The thundering Blue Nile Falls are quite spectacular, and there is also time to enjoy a boat trip on Lake Tana.

Omo Valley SafariThis area is virtually free from human habitation, except along the banks of the Omo River, and we visit many of the small villages learning the customs of the local tribes. The Omo National Park, the largest in the country with an area of 3 450 square kilometres, is a vast expanse of true wilderness. It is one of the richest and least visited wildlife sanctuaries in eastern African.

Danakil Depression – the hottest place on EarthIn Eastern Ethiopia, part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley lies the Danakil Depression, renowned as having the highest average temperatures on Earth (from 30ºs up to 55ºC in summer) and home to many active volcanoes, it is also almost 120 metres below sea level. This fascinat-ing corner of Africa is little visited. “Mount Dallol” with its yellow sulphur fields dotted amongst salt beds and Erta Ale, a shield volcano, has a base diametre of 30 kilometres and is only 500 metres high, with two pit craters and an active lava lake that is the only permanent lava lake on earth! The nomadic Afar people habituate this area. Itineraries are tailor-made to this fascinating place!

Southern Africa

ZambiaThe ‘real’ Africa – Zambia offers visitors a chance to explore remote parks such as South & North Luangwa, Kafue, and Kasanka...each of these pristine wilderness areas home to incredible game and birdlife. The adventure addict can hone into Living-stone, at Victoria Falls – with a large range of accommodation available.

Victoria Falls, LivingstoneVictoria Falls needs little introduction. There is a good range of lodges and hotels on the Zambian side of this ‘wonder of the world’, from where you can explore the river, the parks and enjoy the Falls themselves. A few of our favourites are listed below.

The Waterfront, LivingstoneThe Zambezi Waterfront is Zambia’s unique riverside adventure village, 4 kilometres upstream from the Victoria Falls. It is designed to cater for all travellers and offers a wide variety of accommodation ranging from camping, to tents on platforms, to good quality thatched chalets. The twin chalets have en suite facilities. Beautiful sunsets may be enjoyed from the bar and restaurant area with views both up and down the river, and there are two swimming pools to cool off in.

Thorntree, Livingstone, Zambezi RiverThorntree Lodge is 20 kilometres upstream from the Victoria Falls, situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. There are 9 twin-bed chalets, under thatch, with en suite facilities, each having a verandah

with deck chairs and private view of the river. Guests may watch elephants wading between the islands and a wide variety of birdlife from the wooden sundeck stretching out over the river. There is a swimming pool and thatched gazebo in the grounds.

River ClubRiver Club is situated on the Zambezi River and faces west with spectacular views of some islands which are usually frequented by elephant. This beautiful Colonial style lodge accommodates a maximum of 20 guests in 10 open-fronted, split-level, timber and thatched chalets. Each chalet has mosquito nets, overhead fans and en suite facilities. The main building (which is the original farmhouse) houses the dining room, drawing room, reception and shop. There is a croquet lawn for those up to the challenge, and a great wine cellar!

South Luangwa ValleyThis remote park is situated at the end of the Great Rift Valley, with the Luangwa River dominating the scenery together with massive acacias. Over many years the river has changed course, leaving plenty of ox-bows and lagoons teaming with wildlife. Covering an area of just over 9 000 square kilometres, this pristine park is famed for its night drives, leopard population and for guided walking safaris.

Walking safaris were pioneered in this park and are still one of the best ways of experiencing the African wilderness. The park has 60 animal species and 400 different bird species. This is one of the premier wilderness areas in Africa, famed for its seclusion and natural beauty.

North Luangwa This park lies on the other side of the Luangwa River, sharing the same geology, wildlife diversity and birdlife as its southern partner. This corner of Africa is truly remote, and safaris are generally conducted on foot.

Luangwa Valley Walking Safari with BushcampsAfrican walking safaris were pioneered in the Luangwa Valley and are offered from June to November. The ‘Bushcamp Experience’ is a 3 or 4 night (or longer!) walking safari between bushcamps. Enjoy the freedom of walking between remote camps in the heart of the Luangwa Valley. All camps are ideal for small groups seeking a heightened personalised wilderness experience, fantastic hospitality and greater opportunities to explore this magnificent wildlife sanctuary on foot.

Kafunta River Lodge, South LuangwaThis lodge is set in riverine forest on the banks of the Luangwa River. The 8 attractive chalets, fashioned from wood and thatch, are set on stilts overlooking the national park. Each has private balcony views and offer spacious accommodation with roof fans and en suite facilities. The main bar/dining area surrounds a magnificent wild mango tree and overlooks the river and there is a swimming pool. Take part in game drives, walking safaris and night drives accompanied by experienced safari guides and discover the abundance of wildlife in the park. Kafunta River Lodge is open year round.

Kafue National ParkEnjoy a safari to one of Africa’s largest game parks, Kafue National Park – 22 400 square kilometres of breathtaking wilderness and the greatest species diversity of all the national parks in Zambia. It hosts 158 species of mammals including 4 of the Big 5, 480 species of birds and 58 species of fish. This makes it a perfect destination for nature lovers, bird watchers and anglers alike. The best time to travel is during the dry season – May to October.

Kafue Safari, 8 daysAn eight day safari allows time to take in the north and south regions of Kafue National Park, with nights spent in four different safari camps namely Nanzhila Plains, Kaingu, Busanga Plains and Mukambi. The pace is relaxed and allows guests to truly enjoy the region.

Nanzhila Plains Camp This is an intimate lodge, taking only 12 guests in either large en suite tents, or thatched cottages, and is located in the remote southern sector of Kafue. The area is best known for its lush woodlands, the beautiful plains and the Nanzhila stream that runs through it. Cooke’s African Safaris (Konkamoya) is a family run safari lodge situated on the banks of Lake Itezhi-Tezhi in the south of Kafue. Rustic, but charming, the lodge is all about embracing nature and the location ensures a stunning safari adventure. Game viewing is done in an open vehicle, by foot, canoe or by boat. Konkamoya consists of just three chalets, sleeping six people and thus ensuring a very personal experience.

Kaingu SafariKaingu Safari is on the Kafue River, set in an area of pristine wilderness, Kaingu offers walking safaris, river cruises and bird watching. Four luxuriously appointed East African safari tents set under thatch and placed on raised platforms overlook the river. The thatched central boma with lounge, bar and dining room has a large deck with fireplace overlooking the river.

Busanga Plains Camp Situated to the far north of the park, this camp is accessible in the dry season only (July/October). The 5-hour drive to the camp is one long game drive through various habitats with abundant wildlife. The plains are famous for their red lechwe, roan, huge herds of buffalo and wildebeest.

Mukambi Safari LodgeThis lodge is on the banks of the Kafue river, with only four en suite safari tents, offering an intimate safari experience.

ZimbabweA land-locked treasure trove, of some of the best bush in Southern Africa. Despite the uncertainty of recent years, this destination still offers an incredible safari experience.

Hwange National Park still boasts huge herds of elephant, buffalo and many other small species with a small selection of lodges and tented camps operating, Victoria Falls is vibrant and has plenty of hotels and game lodges to choose from, and an array of activities to keep one busy for days on end.

Lake Kariba and the Lower Zambezi National Parks are thriving with good game, a selection of camps and experiences including canoeing, walking and of course game drives.

Lake KaribaLake Kariba is a freshwater paradise studded with islands and fringed by mountains and forests. Kariba is the ideal launching point into Chizarira, Matusadona, Lake Kariba and Mana Pools. The area is rich in wildlife and promises a first class safari. Many of the best attractions are remote and uncommercialised – whether you have a healthy spirit of adventure or a desire for intense “relax-mode” – you ought to look at the Zambezi Valley and Kariba for tented, walking and canoeing safaris; lodges and bushcamps; houseboats and sailing adventures; and fishing safaris.

Lower Zambezi The Mana Pools, a World Heritage Site, is considered to be one of Zimbabwe’s, if not Africa’s, best game viewing areas. Walking safaris, or canoe trails (either fully backed up, or participatory) may be undertaken in this beautiful corner of the country. You may join a small group, or travel privately.

The Zambezi river is a haven to large quantities of animals including buffalo, hippo, elephant and many other species drinking at the water’s edge. This is the Eden of people’s dreams – a safari that will satisfy the most thirsty desire for adventure and a wildlife experience. Victoria Falls Safari LodgeSet high on a natural plateau, enjoying uninterrupted views of spectacular African sunsets and year round game at its on-site waterhole, the Lodge is ideally positioned to offer the most discern-ing traveller a taste of Africa at its best. The rooms each has its own private balcony overlooking the unfenced Zambezi National Park while most look onto the central waterhole. In the Buffalo Bar, Makuwa-Kuwa Restaurant and Pool Deck, friendly Zimbabwean staff offer excellent service and outstanding cuisine.

Hwange National Park, Horse-riding SafariJoin a small group of experienced riders and explore the famous Hwange National Park on horseback. Buffalo and elephant herds are common in this area, as well as a variety of antelope and other species. Nights will be spent under canvas, or at the base lodge

Victoria Falls, The Kingdom HotelBuilt around a man-made water feature, the bedrooms at The Kingdom at Victoria Falls create the impression of having been built on a lake. With a food court, bars and one of Zimbabwe’s finest and most attractive casinos The Kingdom at Victoria Falls has it all, and is the nearest hotel to the mighty Falls.

BotswanaThe magnificent Okavango Delta – in which Moremi Wildlife Reserve is set – fans out across the north-western corner and creates a paradise of islands and lagoons teeming with birds and wildlife. In the north-east, the famous Chobe National Park supports great concentrations of elephant and buffalo. To the south the arid Kalahari Desert unlocks the secrets of many nocturnal species and in particular predators!

Wild Frontiers can tailor-make any style of safari to Botswana – we recommend a combination of ‘water & land’ camps, offering game viewing on foot, by mokoro or boat, or in a 4x4 vehicle.

Okavango Delta, Mokoro & Game Safari, 5 daysEnjoy the tranquility and diversity of the Okavango Delta, overnight at Mankwe Bush Lodge and spend two nights ‘island camping’ in the heart of the Delta.

Wilderness Safaris Classic Camps, Okavango Delta and Moremi Game ReserveThe ‘Classic Wilderness’ camps are generally tented camps, although a few are lodges built from permanent structures. All of these offer superb facilities and many have their tents raised off the ground. All have en suite bathrooms. Camps that fall under this category include Chitabe, Chitabe Trails, Tubu Tree Camp, Jacana, Kwetsani, Little Vumbura and Xigera Camp.

2008/9 WF Brochure.05b.indd 23 8/5/08 6:25:15 PM

We have put together a sample itinerary, which can be adapted to suit individual requirements.

Day 1 Fly to Maun, on arrival transferred to Chitabe Camp by light aircraft. Spend three nights at Chitabe including all meals and game viewing activities.

Chitabe is a very comfortable 16-bedded tented camp built on one of the most beautiful islands in the Okavango Delta, in a private area that is bordered on three sides by the Moremi Game Reserve. The area is surrounded by waterways and lagoons that harbour a wonderful variety of wildlife. Accommodation consists of spacious East African style tents built on elevated wooden decks, each with en suite facilities. A separate thatched dining room, pub, lounge and pool area is linked by raised walkways. Activities consist of day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, as well as nature walks. Night drives can be very rewarding with good sightings of the rarer nocturnal animals.

Day 4 Light aircraft transfer from Chitabe to Kwetsani Camp. Spend two nights at Kwetsani Camp including all meals and game viewing activities.

Kwetsani Island is a large, elongated island surrounded by enormous open plains in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It is located in the private Jao Reserve, an area of 60 000 hectares to the west of Mombo and the Moremi Game Reserve. Kwetsani’s five spacious and lavish “tree-house” chalets are built under thatched roofs and have canvas and pole walls. The dining room, lounge and pub area is situated under cool trees. There is also a plunge pool. Kwetsani offers superb land and water activities – with much of the focus depending on the water levels from the region’s annual flood. In addition to stalking game by mokoro, you will also be able to enjoy exploring palm-fringed islands on foot. Day game drives are a highlight, enabling guests to experience varied and diverse game viewing.

Day 6 Return to Maun by light aircraft for your onward flight to Johannesburg.

Okavango River Boat SafarisWe offer mobile water-based adventures through the entire length of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. From Shakawe or Sepupa, in an area called the pan-handle, it is possible to traverse 400 kilometres all the way through the Okavango Delta, towards Maun.

Boat Safaris offered:• Six-day Trans-Okavango safaris, which runs from June to November when the floodwaters have filled the Delta. This safari travels across the entire length of the Okavango Delta. • Five-day Okavango Game Traverse safaris, which run throughout the year. On this safari you will visit and explore either the top or bottom section of the Okavango Delta depending on water levels.• Multi-day fishing safaris that runs from October to April. These are done on the Okavango River Panhandle and the north western half of the Okavango Delta. All the safaris are operated using comfortable custom-designed aluminium boats. Even though vast distances are covered, most of the day is spent drifting downstream while game watching and birding, or just relaxing onboard taking in the magnificent palm-framed views of the delta.

Okavango Mokoro TrailExploring the myriad of water-ways of the Okavango Delta by mokoro brings you back to nature… quietly sliding through the calm waters, surrounded by birdlife, peaking above the reeds to the islands… is soul-refreshing. Explore some of the larger islands on foot, and also enjoy time on game drives to complete your adventure! Your nights will be spent on islands, and your days will be divided between silently drifting in your mokoro through crystal clear waterways; discovering the unlimited facets of the Okavango – plants, animals, birds, insects and fish; swimming near sun bleached sandbanks, basking in the hot African sun, relaxing and generally getting close nature. Your poler will take you for nature/game walks on the larger islands.

There are a number of styles of safari offering mokoro trails – from the luxury, fully supported safari – to the participatory safari.

A mokoro is a local canoe hewn from the trunk of a massive tree: in the stern is your poler – a man in perfect balance, he silently pushes you and your mokoro through the endless floodplains, channels and islands of the Okavango.

Kwando Safaris and Deception Valley Lodge, BotswanaKwando Safaris operates only in exclusive, private areas. These large concessions are unfenced and fully intregrated into the surrounding wilderness. The Kwara concession adjoins the Moremi Game Reserve and is in the heart of the permanent lagoons of the Okavango Delta. The combination of game drives, powerboat trips, mokoro (dug out canoe) trips and walks make Kwara the highlight of any safari.

Adjoining the Central Kalahari Reserve, Deception Valley Lodge provides a rare type of bush experience in one of Africa’s most remote semi-desert areas. This arid savannah wilderness manages to sustain a surprisingly rich diversity of animals that have adapted to the dry conditions. Day and night game drives are offered however here the emphasis is more on experiencing the vastness of the Kalahari and its unique landscapes and people.

All Kwando Safaris camps operate game drives off road and at night with spotlights, are open all year round and include wines, all alcoholic and other beverages in their daily tariff.

The delta – desert combination ensures the visitor a memorable safari.

TRIP GRADESEach trip in this brochure is given a grade which describes the focus, level of activity and the style of the tour.

Easy Walk/TrekWalking holiday that can be enjoyed by just about anyone. Walks are along well-defined trails, rarely exceeding 5 walking hours a day. the fitter you are the more you will enjoy it.

Moderate Walk/TrekWell-defined trails with plenty of ‘ups’ and ‘downs’. some walking days may be 6 or 7 hours in duration. Altitude will not exceed 4 500 metres. A reasonably good level of fitness is recommended.

Adventurous TrekWalking up to 7 hours a day (occasionally more), travelling up to 15 kilometres a day, over hilly terrain, usually on well-defined trails. Altitudes may range up to 5 000 metres.

Challenging TrekA high level of physical preparation is essential, as you will be walking up to 8 hours a day, occasionally on narrow or little-used tracks. Altitudes may exceed 4 000 metres, with some days above 5 000 metres.

Mountaineeringthese are either very challenging treks or climbing expeditions, moving above the snowline, using ice axe, crampons and ropes under supervision and instruction from your trek leaders. these trips require a high level of psychological and physical stamina. Prior trekking or mountaineering experience is an advantage, though not essential.

MOUNT KILIMANJArO, TANZANIA

Kilimanjaro – the highest freestanding mountain in the world – lies 3 degrees below the equator, is contained entirely within Tanzania and is one of Africa’s youngest volcanoes. It peers down to Kenya on its northern border, and covers an area of over 5 100 square kilometres, thrusting over five kilometres into the sky! Its top is permanently ice-capped and offers both the hiker and mountaineer a rare challenge. At 5 895 metres it is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the legendary Seven Summits. Although not to be taken lightly, any reasonably fit person can reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, and there are several routes available. You will need a minimum of five days for the hike (but preferably six or more days), and you ascend from the steaming tropical rain forests, through heath land, to alpine desert, finally reaching the permanent glaciers and the summit, Uhuru Peak.

Wild Frontiers offer regular departures for individuals or groups. We will discuss, in detail with you, the different routes available, as well as the preparation required for such a trip. Our Johannesburg staff first summited Kili in 1993, and between us we have almost twenty successful summits.

Wild Frontiers success rate for summiting is over 95% and we have an impeccable safety record. This is attributed to good preparation and professional guiding. Our guides are the best available, their enthusiasm, knowledge of the region and care of you – their client – will ensure that your hike is comfortable and rewarding.

2008/9 WF Brochure.05b.indd 31 8/5/08 6:25:23 PM

32

We also have travel add-on packages that enable you to explore the region further after your climb, like safaris to areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, or to go and relax on the pristine beaches of Zanzibar.

Our base hotel in Moshi has a great atmosphere, with a swimming pool, verandah, friendly pub and satellite TV. Our guides are permanently employed; some have summited well over 400 times! Portable oxygen is available for emergencies, and our guides have been properly trained on mountain rescue and first aid, as well as being environmentally aware of correct waste disposal and mountain hygiene.

These guides have led top international mountaineers up Kilimanjaro, and their expertise and enthusiasm will take you to the top! We have organised successful team building and corporate challenges and have regularly hosted film crews and celebrities to the top of the mountain and look forward to taking YOU there.

Wild Frontiers arrange professional guided expeditions, not budget hikes! Attention to detail will ensure an achievable summit with your safety and well-being foremost in our planning.

A few of the better known routes are specified, but we also organise climbs on the remainder of the routes, like the Londorossi/Lemosho Glades and Shira Routes.

Mt Meru Climb, 6 days – Challenging TrekThe dark cone of Mount Meru rises to 14 978 feet in Northern Tanzania and stands imposingly above the town of Arusha. It is arguably the most elegant volcano in Africa but fails to secure a place amongst the greatest African peaks. Its height narrowly denies it a permanent snow-capped summit, and it is dwarfed by the magnitude of Kilimanjaro, which stands only some 50 kilometres to the east. This route is little utilised and a true wilderness experience. The route up covers a variety of ecosystems – parkland, forest, heather and alpine. There is a good chance of seeing game on this route, and an armed National Parks Guide will accompany you, as well as our trained mountain guides and porters.

It is not an easy climb – but the lower altitude and shorter distances make it achievable. This route is a hike – no climbing as such. It is very cold – correct kit is a must – but our kit lists and hire equipment are top quality. A Meru climb is often used as an acclimatisation hike prior to a Kili Climb.

Day 1 Fly from Johannesburg to Kilimanjaro airport. Met and transferred to Moshi to overnight at your hotel.Day 2 Climb briefing. Transferred to Momela Park Gate (1 500 metres). “The Mountain of the Moon”, Rwenzoris, Uganda, Challenging Trek / Mountaineering optionThe ‘Rwenzoris’ lie along the western border of Uganda with the DRC. A chain of remote fold mountains, they contain some of the East Africa’s most unusual and luxuriant vegetation and beautiful lakes. The main summit, Margherita (5 109 metres), rises out of the Stanley Plateau, the largest glaciated area on the African continent. To the west is the endless expanse of the DRC jungle and to the east, mist and clouds that rise up over the Lake Victoria basin. The best times to climb are from mid-December to end February, and mid-June to end August.

Mount Kenya ClimbMt Kenya – the second highest mountain in Africa at 5 199 metres – crowns one of the world’s highest National Parks. A beautiful area of moorland, forest, lakes, rock and ice, it is a must for lovers of high altitude trekking. The lower slopes are covered with natural forest – home to elephant, buffalo, various monkey species and birds. As one gets higher, the vegetation changes to heath moorland, covered with giant groundsels and lobelia, until the cold and altitude allow only lichens to survive.

The twin peaks of Batian and Nelion are a technical option – a 700 metre rock face and the cold and altitude makes this a hard task. The next highest peak – Point Lenana – is accessible to hikers. Our “Classic” route climb stays away from the over-populated Naru Moru Route as much as possible, and adds incredible views of the surrounding plains, small lakes and the immense peaks of Batian and Nelion. This ultimately adds to your experience and enjoyment!
