Dear Families,
We would like to extend our CONGRATULATIONS to our Year Six Leaders for 2018! We were very proud of all the students who took part in the nomination process and put themselves forward for the roles.
Well done to:
Currently in Class... Reading This term at Wilandra Rise Primary School students are continuing to be involved in the CAFÉ reading program. Students are working particularly hard on their comprehension skills and range of vocabulary by exploring and analyzing the main characters of the children’s animated movie Inside Out. Additionally, students have been working towards building their reading stamina, reading independently and making choices that support their learning in Reading.
Writing For the remainder of this term, we are studying descriptive text types. There will be a focus on continuing to develop their skills at descriptive writing through increasing their knowledge in the use of similes, metaphors, adjectives and adverbs. We will continue to follow the writing process which includes researching, brainstorming, planning, drafting, editing and publishing.
Mathematics We are focusing on the geometric concepts of location, transformation and angles. Additionally, the students will be developing their knowledge and skills regarding the units of measurement related to the concept of time. Electives Year 5 and 6 students continue to enjoy the opportunity to participate in our exciting electives program that includes subjects such as drama, music, cooking, coding, design and engineering, gymnastics and paper craft. A key focus of the program has been on developing our students’ capacity to communicate respectfully, collaborate with one another and work effectively within a team environment.
So Far this Term... Term 4 has proven to be a hectic time of year for our Year 5/6 students. They have been fortunate to participate in a range of experiences such as rugby and hockey clinics, Water Safety Program at Casey RACE and T20 School Cricket Tournament. The Year 5 students were invited to spend a day at Lynd-hurst Secondary College to experience life as a secondary student by participating in classes such as science, woodwork and metalwork.
Incursion
On Tuesday 28th November, Jim Asimakopoulos came and spoke to the Year 6 students about over-coming life’s challenges and never giving up. Having lived with Cerebral Palsy his whole life, Jim was awarded an Order of Australia in 2006 for his community work. In 1988, Jim pioneered the Abilities and Disability Awareness Program with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Jim spoke to the students about the value of believing in yourself and focusing on what they do well as important strategies to assist with the transition to secondary school.

Remembrance Day –Poetry Writing
This term the Year 5/6 students have been exploring and experimenting with writing various forms
of poetry that have included Haiku, Cinquain, Diamante, Quatrain, Acrostic and Shape/Concrete
poems. Their poetry writing has been amazing and inspirational. In particular, the students applied
their poetry writing skills to create some moving poems to commemorate Remembrance Day.
Thank You!!
As the first year of Wilandra Rise Primary School draws to a close, we would like to thank all the
parents and family members for supporting the school staff, and importantly, the students
through what has been an amazing year. We would like to wish all our Year 6 students every
success for their secondary school journey and look forward to seeing the Year 5 cohort return-
ing in 2018 to take up the responsibilities as the senior students of the school. Finally, we would
like to wish all families a safe and festive holiday period, and a Happy New Year!!!
