TUESDAY, May 10, 2016 Registration begins at 8:00 am

Exhibits & IdeaMart Open — 8:30 am - 6:00 pm

Welcome & Opening — 9:15 - 10:15 amFood, Cooking, Money-Saving A trusted resource for home cooks everywhere, Melissa

d’Arabian is well known for sharing her satisfying and nutritious yet simple and aff ordable meal ideas as well as her useful time and moneysaving strategies.

Break— 10:15 - 10:30 amVisit Exhibits & IdeaMart

Block Session — 10:30 am - 12:00 pmThe Normal Newborn and Why Breastmilk is Not Just Food Many women do not believe that the body that created

their beautiful baby is capable of feeding that same child and we are supplementing more and more infant formulas designed to be food. In this session we explore why breastmilk is more than just food, knowledge which we can use to empower mothers who believe they cannot satisfy their baby. A baby at the breast is getting their immune system developed, activating their thymus, staying warm, feeling safe from predators, having normal sleep patterns and wiring their brain, and (oh by the way) getting some food in the process.

Networking Lunch — 12:00 - 1:15 pm

Break — 1:15 - 1:30 pm Visit Exhibits & IdeaMart

Concurrent Sessions — 1:30 - 2:45 pm

201 Traveling Sensory Classroom The Traveling Sensory Classroom is an experiential

workshop that helps attendees understand what it is like to have Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). The classroom is split up into three sections. The fi rst section is an informative lecture on the signs and symptoms of SPD and how it aff ects the behavior of children. The second piece of the classroom is a simulation where participants will receive some personal exposure to overwhelming sensory input. For the third piece, there will be time to debrief the simulation as well as discuss strategies to support children who have SPD.

202 Breastfeeding: Medications, Including Illegal Substances One of the top reasons mothers stop breastfeeding is

because of concerns about a medication they need to take while breastfeeding and the lack of good information available to her to help make an informed decision about that medication. We are also facing increasing numbers of babies exposed to opioids and marijuana during breastfeeding. In this session, learn how medication gets into breastmilk and resources for good information about medication and breastfeeding. We will also look at what we know about and how to counsel mothers on drugs like methadone and marijuana.

203 MI-WIC System Update

204 Stepping Out of the WIC Box Learn about how a local WIC agency received a federal

grant to help the community gain access to healthy food, health care and insurance through coalition building, restaurant initiatives and resource guides. Find out more about these innovative policy system and environmental changes during this session.

205 The Role of Leadership: Managing Change Leadership is the force behind successful business

operations. Learn how to use strategic leadership techniques to eff ectively manage business transitions/changes and how to support staff in the midst of those challenges.

Concurrent Sessions — 3:00 - 4:15 pm301 Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Prenatal exposure to alcohol is the leading known

preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. Children exposed to alcohol before birth can have serious life-long impairments in cognitive, social, and emotional development. WIC providers can play a major role in reducing alcohol consumption during pregnancy and identifying young children exhibiting problems associated with prenatal alcohol exposure who should be referred for a multidisciplinary evaluation. This session will provide a general overview of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) including the prevalence, diagnostic criteria, and associated neurobehavioral defi cits. Simple screening and brief intervention techniques for pregnant women and guidelines for referring children for a multidisciplinary FASD diagnostic evaluation will also be discussed.

302 Navigating the First Two Weeks: The Normal Newborn and Appropriate Supplementation

Every species has instinctual behaviors that allow the little ones to grow up to be big ones and keep the species going. What is a normal term human infant supposed to do? Our babies are born into the world needing protection – protection from disease and protection from predators. This session examines and explains how a newborn baby at the chest gets both and why we need a good reason to supplement the newborn.

303 Data Mining: How to Get the Most out of Michigan WIC Data This session will demonstrate how WIC data is used to

explore solutions available to program needs such as funding, cost containment and health outcome. WIC EBT data, Michigan PNSS & PedNSS and other data from Michigan WIC systems will be used.

consume and this lack of awareness may lead to over-consumption. is met with heightened needs, concerns and nutrition risks, when placed in certain scenarios such as “My Baby don’t have no Milk”. During this session de-escalation techniques will be discussed to help raise awareness about these issues and to help bridge the gap between participants and the WIC team.

The journey begins with the Public Health Management Team and travels to the County Board of Commissioners eventually reaching to the local birthing hospitals, Ob offi ces, Pediatricians and other maternal and infant health program. This will lead to new policies and procedures that promote, protect and support breastfeeding with a consistent message.

Concurrent Sessions — 10:45am - 12:00 pm403 Michigan WIC – Academic Partnerships to Reduce Obesity

Disparities in Early Childhood Preschoolers from low-socioeconomic backgrounds remain

at greater obesity risk despite recent decreases in the overall prevalence of obesity among children ages 2 to 5 years old. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides services to nearly 4.7 million preschoolers from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and thus is uniquely poised to make a substantial public health impact in reducing preschool obesity disparities. The Michigan WIC program and Wayne State University have recently embarked on two research partnerships to develop programs that can supplement the services families already receive through WIC related to weight management.

404 RDs and RNs take a shot at promoting Immunizations! This session will focus on RDs and RNs promoting

and assessing all WIC enrolled infant and children’s immunizations and providing or referring for immunizations if indicated. WIC staff to provide Pregnant Women enrollees immunization information and providing or referring to medical providers/Health Departments if indicated.

405 Positive Communication Creates Positive Relationships Whether at work, with family and friends, or in our

communities, healthy relationships are based on constructive communication patterns. In this high-energy session, we will examine how perception, nonverbals, confl ict, and relational messages aff ect interpersonal communication. A focus will be on learning specifi c strategies to provide optimal, caring customer service for internal and external audiences, as well as yourself.
