Letter from acc president

E very time I look at the annual

amount of dollars the ACC Foundation

provides for student financial

assistance, I can’t help but react in awe.

I understand this is a tremendous amount of money which permits so many

students to be able to attend Alamance Community College. I also realize

the funds don’t magically appear because we wish it. There are so many

individuals to thank for these fund raising efforts — the Foundation staff

and directors, the local business and industry owners who believe in what

we do, and the individual donors who understand the importance of

a quality workforce and the value of a college education.

The College is blessed to have a Foundation which is capable of awarding so

much money for student needs. As the General Assembly continues to raise

community college tuition, and as federal student aid eligibility is tightened,

the burden for meeting the needs of students is shifting more and more to

private entities. Thankfully, our local donors have stepped up their giving to

permit us to continue offering relief to so many deserving students.

We do indeed appreciate your support for ACC’s Foundation.

Martin H. Nadelman, Ed.D., President,

Alamance Community College

Letter from accf president

W e are humbled, we are grateful,

and we are blessed to have the

immense and continuing support

of our generous donors and the caring

community in which we serve. The students

who benefit from the benevolence of so many kind and generous people are

forever indebted to a mission to fulfill with passion, the hope and inspiration

embodied in these many gifts. And having heard tell of the life journeys of

many of these hopeful students, we know their plight is an earnest one.

The Alamance Community College Foundation exists to aid students with

a demonstrated financial need in reaching their educational goals, while

also supporting the mission of Alamance Community College. The dedicated

members of this board strive annually to promote and support this endeavor.

There is not a more sincere and impassioned group. We look hopefully

to the future. The past few years have been difficult, but our board, and

our students, have persevered. With that pioneering spirit, we look to

a brighter future with prepared and opened minds that are fed with

knowledge by a caring community, wise instructors, and an unquenchable

thirst for understanding.

With sincere gratitude,

Sue Rich, President,

Alamance Community College Foundation

We look hopefully to the future. The past few years have been difficult, but our board, and our students, have persevered.

The ACC Mission

T he mission of Alamance Community College is to provide an open door to high quality education and learning. Central to this mission is the belief in the unique worth of each person.

Accordingly, the College strives to help people realize their potential and attain a meaningful education that is relevant and responsive to the needs of the local, state and global communities.

The ACC Foundation Mission

T he Alamance Community College Foundation exists to aid students with a demonstrated financial need in reaching their educational goals, while supporting the mission of ACC.

Charles R. Harris, President and CEO, estimates that approximately 75-80% of the organization’s employees, from healthcare to culinary to facilities and grounds keeping, have received at least a portion of their training at ACC.

Prior winners of the Business Partner of the Year Award are LabCorp and ARMC (tie), 2006; Duke Energy, 2007; Kernodle Clinic, 2008; and Chandler Concrete Company, Inc., 2009, Honda Power Equipment, 2010.

Dr. W. Ronald McCarter leaves a rich legacy at Alamance Community College

GRAHAM - William Ronald McCarter, 75, of Graham, died Friday, July 13, 2012, at his home.

D r. McCarter was born in Alamance County, N.C. He retired as president of Alamance Community College in 1999

after serving 17 years. Dr. McCarter and the Trustees started the ACC Foundation in 1983 because the College wanted to be able to do more and better things for more people than it could do with limited state and county budgets. The primary reason for the ACC Foundation

has always been to help people go to college. Last year more than 800 students received ACC Foundation assistance.

During his lifetime, Dr. McCarter’s daughters established the W. Ronald & Peggy Holt McCarter Endowed Scholarship. The family kindly asked that memorials to Dr. McCarter be made to this fund in his obituary.

Ways to give

Gifts of cashCash gifts are immediate and, if you itemize your taxes, your outright gifts of cash are fully deductible for federal income tax purposes.

BequestsAfter providing for loved ones, name ACCF a beneficiary in your will to ensure a permanent legacy of helping ACC students. (Check with your estate planner.)

Tell your loved ones you would like ACCF to be listed to receive memorial gifts in your obituary.

Jane Crabbe (r) and daughter, Lora Walker (not pictured, David Crabbe, Alumnus).

Charitable gift annuity◊ Transfer at least $10,000 to ACCF now and receive a guaranteed

above market rate of return for the remainder of your life. Perfect for those who live off their assets and who are worried about market volatility.

• Immediate tax benefits may be realized.

• Remaining asset value transfers to ACCF use upon passing of the donor.

Vehicles and equipment◊ Certain programs at ACC may benefit from donations

of non-cash items that help educate students in current techniques and technologies.

◊ Such donations may be tax-deductible.

Gifts of life insuranceA life insurance policy that is no longer needed can be a perfect vehicle for a gift. Name ACCF owner and beneficiary of the policy. The current cash value and future premiums paid may be tax deductible. (Check with your life insurance agent for details.)

Gifts of stockGiving long-term appreciated stock may offer you a two-fold tax savings:

1. You avoid paying capital tax on the increase of the value of the stock.

2. You receive a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock at the time of donation.

Gifts of real estateGifts of real estate allow the donor to avoid capital gains tax and realize a charitable deduction on the full fair market value of the real estate.

Why the need is groWing

In recent years, ACC has experienced significant enrollment increases.

◊ Every year for more than a decade, ACC and all community colleges have implemented significant state-mandated tuition increases.

◊ Last fall, the N.C. Community College Grant Program was significantly cut, stranding 195 ACC students. The ACC Foundation was there to help.

◊ This year, Pell eligibility guidelines have been tightened. Generally, the full Pell cutoff is now $25,000 in annual income for a family of four.

I am a soldier in the National Guard Army Reserve, soon to be deployed to Israel. I know that it is with a generous heart for others that you chose to help me. I will give my best effort to ensure that it is well spent.

—Kwanetta S. Blackwell

I plan to transfer to a local university and continue my goal toward a four-year degree. I’ve been attending ACC part-time for several years, while trying to also contribute to my children’s college education. Last year, I was laid off from my job of 12 years and I just began a new job. With such a set-back, I was unsure if I would be able to return to ACC this semester. The classes I’m taking continue to improve my work skills and will better prepare me for continued employment. Thank you so much for making this possible.

—James E. Brock Jr.

Letter from accf executive director

I give because I believe every student deserves a chance, regardless of family circumstances, money, and educational history. And I love seeing potential donors make that connection as they turn their logical

thinking (I need to give because my colleague, friend told me to) into true passion (I am giving to provide every individual in our community with the opportunity to go to college and become productive members of our community).

Thank you to the hundreds of individuals, businesses and organizations who support access to higher education in our community. Together, we make this college and community great.

Carolyn Rhode Executive Director, ACC Foundation
