Is part of your business strategy getting to knowthese people? Are any of these people your competitors? What are they doing using a social networking site? They are talking to each other. They are networking.Fortunately, everyone in this room today is aprofessional networker, so it should be possible forus to do this too.

Professional Networking is about usingconversations to build a network of trustedcontacts with which one can share information, collaborate and do business. And as we have heard, over the last five years inparticular, the internet has moved from a largelyobservational medium to a participatory one, andparticipation means conversations.

Id like to use my time today to look at threethings that effective networkers do well, (whichshould be part of any marketing plan)and share with you some examples of how theyare doing these things online.Because by doing them online as well as offlinecan help you reach more people, more effectively.

    Its not the Golf

Many networkers play golf.We have a partner who plays golf, and hes verygood. Not just at the golf though, hes a charming, easygoing person who is comfortable in social circles.Hes asked to play golf because hes a nice guy.

    Its not the Golf

Business people play golf because it is anenvironment outside of business but not entirelysocial, where people can talk in an unencumberedway about work. So its a great environment forintroducing people to each other, and seeing ifthey get along before any commitments are made. The game of golf is just a tool what matters iswhat you do with it.Lets have a look at an online example.

    Its not the Party

Twitter is often described as a round the clockparty. But its more important than that. Its a tool for having conversations what mattersis what you do with it.

    Twitter

On twitter people come and go over time, groupsform and reform in which conversations takeplace. The tool creates the environment where this ispossible over time and geographical boundaries. On twitter the conversations are visible, andpeople can search for key words, and this waythey find people talking about things they areinterested in, and when they are ready, they getinvolved. With twitter, as with golf, people will introduceyou to the right people once they reallyunderstand what makes you tick.

This is a website where selected employees areencouraged to write about what it means to workat HOK.Originally conceived as a recruiting tool, it hassucceeded in position the firm as a group ofyoung, hip, creative, talented people.Whilst there isnt a war on candidates any morethe benefits have been significant in other ways. Ithas improved internal communications, mediarelations, and business development, because itdemonstrates that HOK as a company know how toleverage social media effectively.

So be yourself wherever you are. If you areyourself online, anyone can find you easily and get

to know you. Once they trust you, they will bringyou the help you want.

Life at HOK is a blog, which a website wherepeople upload information on a regular basis, andengage in conversations with readers.Which brings me to the second thing a good

    professional networker does.

    PropertyDevelopment= Timing

    + Opportunity

    + Money

One of our favourite stories at Barefoot and Gillesis used to illustrate this idea.A small property developer (lets call him Dave)approached us with a one acre site which planningpermission for flats. But it was June 2008 and having foresight Daveknew he couldnt build out the flats and hope to

sell them in the summer of 2009. So he managedthe risk and approached Barefoot & Gilles.Twelve weeks later Dave put the site on themarket, with outline planning consent for a carehome and demonstrated demand, and walkedaway with a profit of many hundreds of thousandsof pounds.

Each of these groups publicises its meetings onlinethrough a membership site, before, during, afterthe event. This encourages interest and otherpeople join.Perhaps they attend an event and share theexperience with their network. All the time trustis growing and people are finding ways to worktogether.

But what do you do with these contacts? How doyou manage them? There is a way to use the internet to hand pick, grow and manage your physical network, apersonal network directory. My favourite is
