I. He Came to Take Away Our Sins (v.5)

A. “He was manifested to take away our sins”

B. Sin then, brings sorrow, pain and even death.

Rom. 5:12, Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

Rom. 6:23, the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

C. Jesus came to bring us eternal life through faith in His finished work at Calvary.

2 Peter 3:9, The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

D. Because God loves sinners!

Romans 5:12, 15 & 1712Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and

death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

15But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many

17For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

C. Jesus is still destroying the works of the Devil.

He came to destroy the works of the devil!

III. He Came to Show the Father’s Love (Ch.4:9)

A. “Manifested the love of God toward us.”

B. God loved us first (Ch. 4:10).

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Rom. 5:8, But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

…that He might destroy the works of the devil
