Why Ishi?

Why was an American Indian Head chosen as the symbol of TBA?

The Indian represented is ‘Ishi’ the last of the Yahi Indians, who on his entry into the white

man’s world and way of life was befriended by Prof. A L Kroeber and Dr. Saxton Pope. During this later period of his life, his contribution to Anthropology was immense.

Possibly his greatest gift to modern man was in fact that it was he alone who introduced Dr. Pope

to the art of archery and hunting with the bow. This in turn became the passionate interest of Dr. Pope in his later years and together with Art Young, hunted big game with the bow in America

and Africa. Their many books and writings on these exploits were the major factor which re-introduced modern man to once again take up his oldest and most natural sport of hunting

archery.

The word ‘Ishi’ is Yahi for man and it is symbolic that “Ishi” does not represent just an Indian, but all men and all nations have a common history of archery and hunting as a way of life.

Archery and bowhunting is a truly international sport and no one nation can claim to be the only originator. So to Trophy Bowhunters at least ‘Ishi’ represents the spirit of bowhunting and could

be considered the father of modern bowhunting. Historically the ‘Ishi’ symbol is indicative of what one man stood for rather than a nation of men.

What is important is that we not lose touch with the history and tradition of ‘Ishi’ the man – if

this is allowed to occur, ‘Ishi’ will be seen as just another Indian with little significance to our Association.

of the

Trophy Bowhunters of Australia Club

Preamble

The Trophy Bowhunters of Australia was originally the sole authority for the measuring and

recording of bowshot game within Australia. This Organization was a non-profit, non-government recognised organization, established to provide recognition of bowshot trophy game

taken within Australia according to its Rules of Fair Chase. In recognition of the growing need for an organization which had access to funds and which could approach Governments, for the

protection and development of the Sports of Bowhunting and Field Archery, the Australian Bowhunters Association Inc. was created from this parent organization of TBA. Pursuant to

these ends TBA and ABA Inc. amalgamated. The new Association of ABA Inc. developed a Bowhunting Division to take over the hunting responsibilities of TBA. The TBA was

incorporated into ABA Inc. as a Club of experienced hunters that have proven their skills in the taking of bowshot game to a minimum standard required for membership of the Club.

The TBA, through the Bowhunting Division of ABA Inc., also acts as an advisor on bowhunting

matters to the Association.

The Trophy Bowhunters of Australia Club is created under the authority of the Constitution, Rules and Policies of the Australian Bowhunters Association Inc. and all activities and

operations of the Club shall be confined to that authorised by the Constitution, and Rules of the Australian Bowhunters Association Inc., and these By-Laws.

These By-Laws of the Trophy Bowhunters of Australia Club are constituted as an Addendum to

the Constitution, and Rules, of the Australian Bowhunters Association Inc.

2. Name

The Trophy Bowhunters of Australia Club, hereafter referred to as "the Club" shall be a Club of the Australian Bowhunters Association Inc., as provided under Section 21 of the Constitution of

the Australian Bowhunters Association Inc., hereafter referred to as "ABA Inc.” The Ishi symbol shall be the logo of the Club.

3. Aims

The aims of the Club are:

(a) The promotion of Trophy Bowhunting in Australia and the promotion of Bowhunting

Ethics of the highest possible standard.

(b) To represent the views of the Club, and its members, in the decision making process of ABA Inc., through representation on the National Management Committee of ABA Inc.,

in accordance with Section 21 of the Constitution.

(c) To provide advice and to recommend policy, on hunting related issues.

(d) To provide a means of contact between Club members throughout Australia, and social and other activities for members.

(e) To organize an annual activity for members at the ABA Inc. National Safari.

4. Membership

Membership shall be in accordance with the provisions of Section 2l of the Constitution of ABA

Inc.

5. Administration

(a) The Club shall be responsible to the National Executive Committee through the Vice-President, Bowhunting Division, and the National President.

(b) The Club shall be managed by a Committee, “the Management Committee" according to

the Constitution and provisions of these By-Laws, and the policies of ABA Inc.

(c) The Officers of the Committee shall be four (4) members. A Chairman of Committee shall be elected from within the members of the Committee, by the Committee members.

(d) Election of Committee Members shall be as prescribed by the Constitution by postal

ballot of TBA Club members eligible to vote. Such Elections shall be implemented by the Executive Director in conjunction with election of National Officers as required from

time to time. Provided also that only those TBA Club members who are financial members of the Australian Bowhunters Association Inc. shall be eligible to nominate or

second nominations for election to the Committee, and to exercise a vote in such election of Committee members. Eligibility for election as Committee Members shall comply

with the provisions of Section 10(a)(iii) and 10(a)(v) of the Constitution.

(e) The term of office shall be that prescribed by the Constitution for National Executive Officers of A B.A. Should an Office be not filled or on becoming vacant, an interim

appointment may be made by the National Executive Committee, pending elections being held, as prescribed.

(f) The Committee shall meet at the call of the Chairman or as directed by the National

Executive Committee, the National President or the Vice-President, Bowhunting Division. A Minimum Quorum of the Committee shall consist of the Chairman and two

(2) Committee members. A postal or telephone Meeting may be held at the discretion of the Chairman, to attend to urgent issues.

(g) The Committee may appoint a Secretary from within its members, or from the ranks of

TBA Club membership. In the case of an appointment being made from the Club membership, the appointee shall exercise no vote in the decisions of the Committee.

(h) All decisions by the Committee on matters of Policy constitute a recommendation to the

national Executive Committee, and shall require ratification by the National Executive Committee.

6. Duties of Officers of the Committee

(a) The Chairman shall be responsible for the day to day administration of the Club and its

activities and shall conduct the affairs of the Club in accordance with the Constitution, Rules and Policies of ABA and the By-Laws of the Club.

The Chairman shall also ensure that a Club presence is maintained in the Association's

magazine through publication of appropriate bowhunting articles and technical bowhunting information.

(b) The Secretary shall see to all Correspondence relating to the activities of the Club, and

generally operate to the best interests of the Club and its members.

The Secretary shall maintain a record of all Committee Meetings, and a copy of those Minutes is to be forwarded to the National President, the Vice-President Bowhunting

Division, and the Executive Director as soon as practicable after each Meeting.

(c) It shall be the responsibility of the Chairman and the Secretary to keep the National President and the Vice President, Bowhunting Division fully informed on all activities of

the Club.

7. Financial Arrangements

(a) All costs incurred in the operation of the Club shall be borne by ABA Inc., and all income raised by the Club shall be paid to ABA Inc.

(b) ABA Inc. shall include in its annual budget a budget for the annual income and

expenditure of the Club, and a copy of the Budget shall be made available to the Committee Chairman.

The amount provided by the Budget shall not be exceeded except with the approval of the

National Executive Committee.

The Chairman will submit to the National Executive Committee by the 31st March each year, a budget estimate showing full details of requirements for the following year.

(c) The Chairman will forward to the Executive Director a financial statement setting out the

value and description of all Club Assets, as at the 31st May each year for inclusion in the Association's annual financial report.

(d) Claims for expenses in Club Management shall be submitted through the Vice-President,

Bowhunting Division to the Executive Director, not less than quarterly each year.

(e) All expenditure claims are to be certified by the Chairman and Vice-President, Bowhunting Division.

8. Amendment of By-Laws

These By-Laws may only be amended on a 75% majority vote of all members eligible to vote,

conducted as a postal ballot, as a recommendation by the Committee for approval of the National Executive Committee.

9. Dissolution

The Club cannot be dissolved, other than by the dissolution of the ABA Inc.

How do I become a TBA Member

Membership of the TBA is granted by the VP Bowhunting after taking and claiming your first Trophy Class animal. This animal must have been measured by an approved measurer and

claimed through the correct channels via your Club Field Representative. Then the Vice President, Bowhunting will issue you with your letter of recognition to purchase your TBA Ishi

Patch, shown below.

After you have claimed three different species at Trophy Class level or better, you will be eligible to wear the Three Arrow Chevron shown below. This recognizes you as a Senior

Member of TBA.

Each arrow represents a Trophy Class animal of a different species. Every successive Trophy Class claim of a different species will allow you to wear another arrow chevron. These are

available in single or two arrow configurations.

Each different species of game claimed will be recognised at Branch level by your Branch Field

Representative. This information will be forwarded to the Vice President, Bowhunting for National recording. Your Branch Field Representative will acknowledge this achievement by

forwarding you a recognition letter which will allow you to obtain the corresponding animal patch from the ABA Shop.

The Game Award, Trophy Class and Record Class chevrons are also available. The appropriate chevron will be noted on your recognition letter.

Of the 18 species claimable through the Australian Bowhunters Association, four are non-measurable and can only be claimed as Game Awards.

These are:

Rabbit, Hare, Donkey and Scaled Fish.

The 14 remaining species are all measurable and can be claimed as Game Award, Trophy Class,

Record Class and Australian Record.

These are:

Sambar Deer, Fallow Deer, Hog Deer, Chital Deer, Rusa Deer, Red Deer, Pig, Cat, Goat, Fox, Camel, Buffalo, Stingray and Shark.

There are also two sections of Bowfishing with the ABA, these are:

Bowhunting for Fish: This is the hunting for fish while walking either on the land or in the

water.

Bowfishing for Fish: This is the hunting for fish with the assistance of any water borne craft.

Patches will be presented by National on achieving mile stones in the claiming of game.

Bowhunter Royale: 10 Trophy Class species Bowhunter Imperial: 20 Trophy Class species

Bowhunter Supreme: 40 Trophy Class species

For each subsequent 10 Trophy Class species a small Ishi Patch will be presented.

A Gold Ishi Patch will be presented for 100 Trophy Class species claimed.

For the purpose of recording Record Class and Australian Record claims count as 2 Trophy Class claims towards the above awards.

Royale Ishi: All 18 species of claimable game in any configuration or Game Award,

Trophy Class, Record Class and Australian Record

Imperial Ishi: All 18 species in any configuration of Trophy Class, Record Class and Australian Record

Supreme Ishi: All 18 species Record Class and Australian Record

A patch will also be issued for all Australian Records

National Points Scoring Awards System

In this system, all claims are sent to the Vice President, Bowhunting via your Branch Field Representative. If measurable, it is measured by an approved measurer and recorded on the claim

form.

All non-measurable game and all under Trophy Class receive 10 points with only one of each species being claimable for the award system.

All Trophy Class claims will be awarded 20 points, no limit. All Record Class claims will be awarded 40 points, no limit.

A National Record will be awarded 100 points.

At the end of each calendar year, the points scored will be totaled and the following award, which includes presentation of a patch, will be presented at the National Safari.

These are:

Master Bowhunter Award

Bowhunters obtaining 300 points or greater within one calendar year in three separate game species, with no more than 100 points coming from Bowhunting For Fish (BHFF) waterborne

game.

Trophy Bowhunter Award

Bowhunters obtaining 200 points or greater but less than 300 within one calendar year in three

separate game species, with no more than 60 points coming from Bowhunting For Fish (BHFF) waterborne game.

Bowhunter Award

Bowhunters obtaining 100 points or greater but less than 200 within one calendar year in three separate game species, with no more than 30 points coming from Bowhunting For Fish (BHFF)

waterborne game.
