SUNNY GROSSOCULTURE AND BRAND BOSSCarlos PieraGlobal Happiness Navigator1. HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE HAPPY IN LIFE? (HANDS) HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE HAPPY AT WORK?WHO WOULD LIKE BOTH? (HANDS) Oh any of you raise 1 hand come talk to me after : )Perfect those of you raised 2 hands, why not both? We spend 1/3 lives at work!. Lets take a moment to think.. What are our goals in life?
_____________________________________________________________________________2. How many of you think you are good at predicting long term sustainable happiness for yourself? Not alone we ask this q all over world, usually only a few handsScience tells us most of us are not great at it. Lets take a moment to think.. What are our goals in life?
3. How often do we think about happiness? Who here things about it 1xmo? How about 1xwk? Who thinks about it every day? How many of you would like to be happy evey day? But we dont think about it every day.. Lets take a moment to think.. What are our goals in life?
1TAKE A MOMENT TO THINK
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS IN LIFE
?So most of us in this room want to be happy, you just told me, so ets take a moment to think about it bit deeperwhat are some of your goals in life? Take moment and get one in mind
Build homeDream JobRun MarathonFit my skinny jeansMake moneyLive to 100Spend more time with your kids 2WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS IN LIFE?
After you answer that q, ask yourself why.. then ask yourself why again.. Most ppl ask enough times it comes back to the same thing. Happiness.
Seems simple, we all know what hapiness feels like, makes sense know how to make selves happy
3WHEN I GET ______ I WILL BE HAPPY
OUR BRAINS ARE HARDWIRED TO SEEK HAPPINESS.
YET WERE SUPERBAD AT PREDICTINGWHAT CAN SUSTAIN IT.LOTTERY WINNERSTERMINALLY INJURED OR DISABLED as humans were hard wired to seek happiness, in dna, universal goal across cultures
but research act shows we are SUPERBAD super bad at predicting and sustaining happiness
we tend go through life thinking: Ill be happy when ____ I buy a houseI make partner I loose 10 lbs..i make $1M all nice things that LINKED to happiness, but dont bring us long term happiness, in fact usually short lived
ie we see with lottery winners happy goes up for period but pretty quickly returns to initial level, many cases, goes below (know some of you are saying TEST ME!)
we all have exs of this in our lives, some of us win the genetic lottery but arent happy, or love lottery, or health.. How long after we realize weve won does our happiness return to where it was? For some of us, do we even know weve won? 4

WE NEED NEW THINKING WHATS worked in the past is NOT working today. Cant keep using same solutions, as challenges are changing / same approach, as game is changing around us
(gary larson, far side)
18BUT, HAPPINESS AT WORK
?Lets take a look at the case for happiness
Can happiness prepare and guide us through changes in business word?19THE CASE FOR HAPPINESSHUMAN SENSE
WE ALL WANNA BE HAPPY! All heading to same goal in life, with differ paths
Seems simple, we all know what happiness is, makes sense know how to get there
20
WHEN I GET _____ , I WILL BE HAPPY
science shows, most of us are NOT goind right direction
treat happiness like its circumstantial.. . When I get ___ ill be happy end up chasing a moving target
Heres what has has happened in past.. Can happen
21
I WISH I HAD THE COURAGE TO LIVE A LIFE TRUE TO MYSELF, NOT THE LIFE OTHERS EXPECTED OF MEI WISH I HADNT WORKED SO HARDI WISH ID HAD THE COURAGE TO EXPRESS MY FEELINGSI WISH I HAD STAYED IN TOUCH WITH MY FRIENDSI WISH I HAD LET MYSELF BE HAPPIERFAST FORWARD:TOP 5 REGRETS IN LIFE* Bronnie Ware, Palliative Care Nurse caring for patients in last 12 weeks of life* Bronnie Ware, Palliative Care Nurse caring for patients in last 12 weeks of life
FF see what ppl said at the end of their lives
What happened? Treated happiness as circumstantial, external based on others ideas of who they should be happiness as destination
______________________________________
Bronnie Ware is an Australian palliative care nurse, caring for patients in the last 12 weeks of their lives. She recorded their dying epiphanies in a blog called Inspiration and Chai, which gathered so much attention that she put her observations into a book called The Top Five Regrets of the Dying.Ware writes of the phenomenal clarity of vision that people gain at the end of their lives, and how we might learn from their wisdom. "When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently," she says, "common themes surfaced again and again.
Courage to live true to myself - This was the most common regret of allWhen people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilledMost people had not honred even half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made.
5. I wish that I had let myself be happier - This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realize until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits, pretending to others to be happyThe so-called 'comfort' of familiarity and fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content, when deep within, they longed to laugh properly and be themselves
WHAT HAPPENED?Pretended to be happy, even fooling selves , living life more true to others Treated happiness as a destination (ill be happy when) dependent on EXTERNAL factors
Science tells realize happiness was a choice until endTHINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR ULOGY WILL BE (TAKE THIS ONE FROM ARIANA HUFFINGTON..)DO YOU WANT THEM TO SAY YEAH SARAH WAS THE MOST EXPEDITIOUS EMAIL RESPOINDER I KNOWHOW CAN WE CHANGE THE I WISH TO AN I LIVED???BUT ONLY 10%HAPPINESS IS PREDETERMINED
*Seawn Achor, The Happiness AdvantageAnd right to think happiness is predetermined but new science tells us only 10%Weve got it all wrong..
not that happiness destination, not based on external circumstance
90% OF HAPPINESS IS HOW OUR BRAINS PROCESS THE WORLD
OUR BRAINS CAN BE REWIRED FOR HAPPINESS. CHANGE YOUR MINDSET, CHANGE YOUR WORLD
THE CASE FOR HAPPINESSSCIENTIFIC SENSEoverwhelmingly 90%, based on internal circumstances, how our brains process our world means its in our controlchange our mindset = change perception of world, and exp of it
so how can we be better?
With a little knowledge, you can change this. Wherever you are in life..
_____________________________________________________________Its not that when we win lottery well be happy (we may) .. happiness not based on external circumstance its overwhelmingly 90%, based how our brains process our world- Change focus and change your world
HAPPINESS FRAMEWORK #2MASLOWS HIEARCHYTHE CASE FOR HAPPINESSSCIENTIFIC SENSE
lets see how some science can help us
maslows heiarchy of HUMAN needs - dont see money or new cars
shows once ppl have basic financial and physical needs met, motivated by other things like belonging, self esteem, fulfillment
thats where we are not always so good at providing our own happiness, or those around us ie at work
25
HAPPINESS FRAMEWORK #33 TYPES OF HAPPINESS
lets look at another scientific framework- it turns out, not all happiness is created equal
left amt happiness increasing, bottom see length time happiness lasts
pleasure- all want pleasure in lives, ice cream and new clothes, date night, movies. often linked to THINGS, short term experiences, shortest longevity ie when get new gift at christmas or bday, how long does that happiness last .... this is kind happiness most us chasing.. When I get ______ ill be happy.. When I achieve ____
passion- most us have things get really excited over, get lost in for hours. often linked to projects, includes flow. longer lasting than pleasure, but has a beginning and an end.ie organizing your wedding or building new house
higher purpose some of us know ours, unfot not taught in schools, but most have at least glimpsed being part something meaningful & bigger than self. longest. Ie dh higher purpose is to DH, make world happier place, well do anything for it
26
HAPPINESS FRAMEWORK #33 TYPES OF HAPPINESS
many go thru life chasing the pleasure happiness, thinking they they will worry about the passion later( me as a bartender )
Pleasure - shortest lasting chasing the next high food, cars, sex.. constant stimulus to work hard to maintain unless youre a rockstar
pleasure- all want pleasure in lives, ice cream, night out drinking. often linked to THINGS, short term experiences, shortest longevity ie when get new gift at christmas or bday, how long does that happiness last .... this is kind happiness most us chasing.. When I get ______ ill be happy.. When I achieve ____
passion- most us have things get really excited over, get lost in for hours. often linked to projects, includes flow. longer lasting than pleasure, but has a beginning and an end.ie organizing your wedding or building new house
higher purpose some of us know ours, unfot not taught in schools, but most have at least glimpsed being part something meaningful & bigger than self. longest. Ie dh higher purpose is to DH, make world happier place, well do anything for it
27
HAPPINESS FRAMEWORK #33 TYPES OF HAPPINESS
Passion second longest lastingFlowPeak performance meets peak engagementAthletes refer to this as being in the zone
Q whats something you do when you loose all concept of time so absorbed in what doing
passion- most us have things get really excited over, get lost in for hours. often linked to projects, includes flow. longer lasting than pleasure, but has a beginning and an end.ie organizing your wedding or building new house
28
HAPPINESS FRAMEWORK #33 TYPES OF HAPPINESS
Higher purpose longest lastingSomething bigger than selfunfot not taught in schools, but most have at least glimpsed
for most sustainable happiness makes sense topursue higher purpose (since its the longest-lasting type of happiness) then layer on top passionsprinkle pleasure in
