Adult Day Care centers are designed for older adults who can no longer manage independently or for those who may live alone and are isolated and

lonely. In addition, these active centers provide respite for caregivers who are on-hand to manage the daily chores that the senior may no longer be

able to do.


What’s more, adult day care has a planned program of activities that promotes well-being in a safe and supportive environment.

Most adult day care centers are just that – they operate during the daytime hours, Monday through Friday. Nutritious meals and an afternoon snack are served and special diets can be accommodated.

There are operating regulations set by each state in the U.S., and the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) also offers advice in its Standards and Guidelines for Adult Care.

Their recommendations include a staffing ratio of 1:6 (staff to senior), depending on the level of impairment of the partici-pants. Most adult day care center staff includes an activi-ties director (and assistants), program assistants who help with personal care, a social worker, a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN), and a director.


An adult day care center differs from an adult day health care, which requires a health assessment by a physician.

Adult day health care (ADHC) often provides therapies, such as physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy or may have services for seniors with memory loss or dementia.

arts and crafts, music, discussion groups, gentle exercise, mentally stimulat-ing games, and...


Seniors who are physically or cognitively challenged but do not require 24-hour supervision can benefit from the activities an adult day care center provides.

Those who are mobile (with the assistance of cane, walker or wheelchair) and continent are good candi-dates for adult day care. Loved ones who are lonely can benefit from the social stimulation an adult day care center provides.
