The culture of a group is made up of things the people share.

They usually speak the same language and believe the same things.

FOUNDERS The people who

start the community are called its founders.

A community begins when a group of people start to live together.

VANCOUVER Vancouver is a

city in Canada, the country to the north of the U.S.

It is a community made up of many groups of people from different parts of the world.

MUSQUEAM INDIANS The Musqueam

Indians were the first people to live on the land where Vancouver was built.

The ancestors of some of the people who live in Vancouver today were Musqueam Indians.

GEORGE VANCOUVER Vancouver is named

for George Vancouver, the British sea captain who explored the area in 1792.

He wanted Vancouver to become part of Great Britain.

He was NOT the founder of Vancouver.

Vancouver, William Hailstone, Sam Brighouse, and John Morton, founded Vancouver when they built Hastings Mill there in 1865.

Hastings Mill was a lumber mill.

RESOURCES IN VANCOUVER Trees were a

resource in Vancouver. There were lots of forests with many trees. These trees provided the lumber the city needed.

miners came from the U.S. and Australia to search for gold.

In the 1880s thousands of Chinese workers came to help build the railroads.

group of Sikhs moved to Vancouver from India to cut trees in the forests.

people celebrate Chinese New Year in February.

On July 1, 1867 Canada gained independence from Great Britain.
