Oneweekitwaslush,greenandhealthy(orsoitseemed).Thenextweekpartofallofitwasdead.Sometimesplantsdieorseverelydecline,apparentlyquiterapidlyandmoreofteninthesummermonths.Well,thecausemayhavebeenthereformonthsorevenyearsanditiswellworthtryingtofindoutthecauseasitcouldwellsaveyoumoneyandheartacheinthefuture.
Thereareanumberofreasonswhyaplant,whetheratree,ashrub,agroundcoverorbeddingplantmaysuddenlydie.Itcouldbeaculturalfactor,meaningsomethingappliedtotheplantthatitdoesn’tlike.Oritcouldbeaphysiologicalcause,meaningsomethingwithintheplantthatcausesortriggersdeclineordeath.Thepointswewillcoverherecanbecomeadiagnostic‘checklist’foryoutouse.Wewillconcentrateontreesandshrubsbecausethesearethemostnoticeableandvaluable.A.CulturalCauses:
WaterStress.Eventhebestgardenerslooseplantstodrought.Couplewaterrepellantsoilstoirrigationproblemsandplantscanstarveofwater.Incorrectspacingofdrippersorsprinklersmayresultinaplantbeingovershadowedbyitsimmediateneighbours.
GasLeaks.Thesearenotuncommonandcauseveryrapiddeathofallplantsinthatarea,soifatreeorshrubdiesandsodothebeddingplantsaroundit,evenlawn,thencallthegascompanywhowillcomeandcheckforleaks.
Paving.Ifpavingisinstallediteffectivelyblocksmoisturefrompenetrating,butalsostopsthesoilfrom‘breathing’.Plantrootsneedoxygentooperate,soifthat’scutofftheycandie.Normallyonesideofthetreeorshrubdeclinesmuchmorerapidlythantheother.
FertiliserBurn.Spillingorapplyingtoomuchfertilizerresultsinalarge,rapidbuildupofsoilsaltsaroundtherootsandthiseffectivelycausesmoisturetobesuckedoutoftheplant,whichcanleadtodeathbydehydration.
RootDamage.Ifalargeproportionoftherootsaredamagedbypruningtoinstallfences,servicesandsoon,plantscanbeseverelydamaged.Itcanalsooftenleadtoinfectionbyrootrotdiseases.
MaliciousDamageisunfortunatelynotuncommon.Someoneforonereasonoranotherdoesn’tlikeaplantorgroupofplants,sotheytakeituponthemselvestokillthem.ChemicalsthatcankillevenhugeEucalyptusarereadilyavailableatretailoutlets.Ifyoususpectyourtreeisbeingpoisonedcallanaboriculturalconsultanttogetaprofessionalappraisal.Theconsultantwilldoathoroughinspectionlookingforanypossiblecause.Ifpoisoningissuspected,alaboratorytestisusuallyarrangedtoproveitonewayortheother.B.PhysiologicalCauses:
Ifyouhavebeenabletodiscountanyoftheculturalcauseswenowcometothemoreusualreasonsforsuddenplantdeath,thephysiologicalcauses,butunfortunatelytheyareoftenmisdiagnosed.Itisimportantthatthesecausesareconsidered,asthediseasesinparticularwillhavelongtermeffectsinyourgarden,especiallyindeterminingwhatspeciesyoumayormaynotbeabletogrow.
OldAge,orintechnicalterms‘naturalsenescence’.Allplantshaveanaturallifespanandnothingyoucandowillchangethat,apartfromsomespeciesthatrespondtoaveryheavypruningthatcanreinvigoratethem.SpeciesofAcaciashrubsandtreesareagoodexample.Wemayexpectthatalltreeslivealonglifebutmanyofthewattlesonlyliveforseventofifteenyearsofage.
Diseases.Therearethreemaindiseasesthatseriouslyinjureorevenkillmanyspeciesoftreesandshrubs.
1.CypressCankerorConiferDie‐backiscausedbythefungusSeridiumcardinale.ThisdiseaseisendemicinPerthandhascausedthedeathofliterallyhundredsofmanyofthespeciesofCupressus,andsomespeciesofThujaandJunipers.Agreatpity,becausetheseevergreenswithlovelyformalshapeshadbecomeanaestheticallyimportantpartofPerth’streescape.
A once glorious Conifer hedge has nearly totally succumbed to this swift and deadly disease. Simple, safe and relatively inexpensive treatments could have saved these trees.
Diseases/CypressCanker/Cont’d:
Thediseaseisspreadbyborers,watersplashorwind,andcausestherelativelysuddenbrowningofbranchesstartingatthetips.Initialinfectionsaremoreusuallyonthenorthandnorthwesternsidesofthecanopy,thenspreadsrapidlytotherestofthetreeresultingindeath.Thediseasecanbepreventedbytheapplicationofcopper‐basedfungicidestwoorthreetimesperyear.Iflessthanonethirdofthecanopyhasbrownedoff,treatmentswithphosphoricacid,eitherbyinjectionorfoliarspray,isoftensuccessful.However,bepreparedtotreatthetreeseveryyearfromnowon.2.Armillariaspp.,oftencalledHoneyfungusorOakrootfungus,isaninsidiousrootrotdiseasethatiscommonbutlittleknowninWA(Shoestringfungusisourworststrain).Thelastfewyearshavebeenparticularlybad,withmanydeaths,sometimesabnormallyoccurringinwinterandspringratherthansummer.ItaffectsfewerspeciesthanJarrahdie‐back,butunfortunatelycannotbetreated.
Itrotstheroots,effectivelystarvingtheplantofwaterandnutrients,andoftenthedeclineisovermanyyearswhenyoumaynoticetheleafcanopyslowlythinningout.However,equallyasoftenitcausestheplanttodieinmonthsorevenless.Whitemyceliumgrowthmaybeseenifyoupeelthebarkofflargerrootsandsometimesunderthebarkofthebaseofthetrunk.Occasionallydull,honeycolouredmushroomsappeararoundthebaseofthetrunk.
3.JarrahDie‐backiscausedbytherootrotfungusPhytophthoracinnamomi,andisendemicthroughoutthesouthwest,includingthesandymetropolitanareawhereitismuchmorewidespreadthanmostpeopleappreciate.Itattacksahugerangeofplants,withmanyofournativespeciesbeinghighlysusceptible.
Itspreadsthroughwaterandmoistsoilsandinfectsnewplantsbyattachingitselftotherootsorbyenteringthroughwoundsonthebaseofthetrunks.Itthenrotsthefinerootsfirstbeforemovingontolargerrootsandeventhetrunk,effectivelystarvingtheplantofwaterandnutrients.Plantsmaystruggleformanyyearsbeforetotallysuccumbing,usuallyinmidtolatesummer.
Symptomsincludeleaflossanddie‐backofshootsandyounggrowth.Oftenyoumayseeattemptsatreshooting,butthesetoothenshrivelanddie.Manyaffectedplantscanbesuccessfullytreatedwithsomefungicides.Ifnot,therearemanyreplacementspeciesthatareresistantoratleasttoleranttothedisease.Otherdiseases.Therearequiteafewotherdiseases,includingotherspeciesofPhytophthora,thatcauserootrots,collarrotsandcankers.However,theseoftenjuststresstheplants,sotheywillcontinuegrowingformanyyearsanditisunusualforthemtocausesuddendeathinmatureplants.
Itisworthmentioningthatplantsmaybecarryingadiseasebutonlyshowslighttomoderatesymptoms.Butaddmuchfurtherstresssuchasdroughtorattackbyborersortermitesandseriousdeclinecansetin,evendeath.Itisinterestingthatborersandtermitesaremuchmoreattractedtostressedplantsthantheyarehealthyones.
Sowhattolookforapartfromfoliagesymptoms?Checkthetrunksforcrackingorpeelingbark,ordarkandmushybark.Next,excavatesomeoftherootsandinspectfordark,softrootbarkthatrubsoffeasily.Youmayalsoseewhitemyceliumgrowthunderthebark.Evenifyouonlysuspectdiseaseisinvolved,quarantinetheareaanddon’tshiftsoiltootherpartsofthegarden,evenonyourshoes,toreducetheriskofspreadingthedisease.
Allthismayallseemabitdepressing,butwhatvaluedoyougiveamaturetreeorshrub?Findingthecausewillputyourmindatrestandhelpyoumanagetheproblemsoyouwon’tloosemanymoreplants.Whatnext?Don’tguessonwhatmaybethecause–callinaexpertwhostillmaysuggestsoilorpathologytesting.
Reduceplantstressasmuchaspossible.Jarrahdie‐back,forexample,onlykillsmaturespecimensiftheyareunderattackfromotherpests,diseasesormaladies.
Checkthesoil–poordrainagecanencourageproblemslikeroot‐rot.Ifreticulated,checkit’sworkingevenlyandeffectively.Alwaysusesoilwettingagentsonsandysoils.
Manydiseasescanbeeffectivelymanagedorcontrolled,eveneradicated.Checkthefactsheetsontreatingdie‐backsonmywebsite.
