The Westword: What is your preferred medium? Rachel Barash: I usually paint or sketch. I draw still lifes, most of which are inspired by my dreams or by nature. Also, I’ve recently started experimenting with film, and I’d really like to do more within that medium. TW: How did you become interested in art? RB: I only just started studying art and taking classes about a year ago. I’m going to be en- rolled in Drawing and Painting next semester, so that will be my first real experience with high school art classes. Basically, art is what I’ve en- joyed doing for my entire life. The first thing I ever wanted to be was an artist; that hasn’t really changed much. TW: Which artists or art forms have influenced your personal style? RB: I’ve always been in- fluenced by the Impres- sionist movement. I tend to change styles, and I usually alternate between impressionism, sur- realism, and real- ism. I haven’t re- ally found my own style yet. My favor- ite painter would probably have to be [Vincent] Van Gogh. His painting, “The Mulberry Tree,” is currently my favorite. This painting depicts a tree with orange and yellow foliage on a background of light yellow ground and dark blue sky with some red and brown accents in the leaves themselves and in the background. I like Van Gogh because I like his use of movement and the energy [this movement] conveys. TW: What makes your artwork unique? RB: I find that my art is often inspired by my dreams. I really enjoy drawing faces, hands, and people. Sometimes, I just sit down some- where and sketch anyone who walks by. Hands are probably my favorite thing to draw. Also, I like to combine different styles and media. I combine oil paints with acrylics and crayons with watercolors. TW: Are there any artistic accomplishments of which you are particularly proud? RB: When I was eleven years old, I had my art displayed in an international art exhibition called Creative Connections. My work has also been featured in Stamford’s Government Center. TW: Which of your paintings is your favorite? RB: My favorite painting of mine would probably be “Theatre,” in which I portrayed a shadow-like figure holding a smiling mask. [Bottom right] TW: Is art included in your future plans? RB: Yes. I would like to go to Cooper Union, an art school in New York City.
