John Williams Websites: www.wikipedia.org www.plum.cream.org

Born in Melbourne, Australia to an English father (Len Williams) and an Australian-Chinese mother, Williams was taught initially by his father. At the age of twelve he went to Italy to study under "The Maestro", Andrés Segovia. Later, he attended the Royal College of Music in London. He is visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Williams made his professional debut at the Wigmore Hall in Lon-don on 6th November 1958, five months shy of his 18th birthday and completing his formal musical education. Williams studied piano and music theory. He didn't study guitar simply because, like most other musical colleges and conservatoires at that time, the RCM didn't provide a Guitar curriculum! Shortly after his graduation, how-ever, he was invited to run the newly-created Guitar department. The College was evidently getting prepared for the onslaught of musicians who'd want to emulate their recent alumnus! He remained in the post until 1973, when his place was taken by his former student Carlos Bonnell. Williams has maintained a relationship with the College throughout the years and remains a Visiting Professor, including to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. John Williams was one of several high-profile young classical solosists trying to make careers during the sixties, very much against the counter-culture norm for their peers. John Williams has always spent a considerable amount of energy on expanding his repertoire beyond what Segovia had established.

Julian Bream, guitarist and lutenist, has delighted audiences since his early recitals as a child prodigy. Following an official debut at Cheltenham on 17 February 1947, at the age of thirteen, he was soon acknowledged as one of the most remarkable artists of the post-war era. By his sixteenth birthday, Julian Bream had taken part in dozens of BBC broadcasts, recitals, and film music, and, furthermore, fascinated by the lute and its culture, had begun researching the Elizabethan repertoire. In No-vember 1951, he made a triumphant debut at the Wigmore Hall, London. Julian Bream was awarded an OBE (1964) for services to music and the CBE (1985). He has received Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Surrey (1968), and Leeds (1984). In 1976 he was personally presented with the Villa-Lobos Gold Medal by the composer's widow. He was elected an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music (1966), and has been honoured with Fellowships of the Royal College of Mu-sic (1981) and the Royal Northern College of Music (1983). In 1988 he became an Honorary Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society, and was also presented with the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist's Award in 1996. In 1997, in celebra-tion if the fiftieth anniversary of his debut, he performed a recital at Cheltenham Town Hall. A few weeks later the BBC dedicated a special television tribute This Is Your Life programme to Julian Bream, filmed after a commemorative concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. His engagements in recent years have included a Gala solo performance at the Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, a Kosovo Aid concert at St. John's Smith Square, London, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields recit-als at the Snape Proms, Aldeburgh, and at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and a tour of UK National Trust properties in summer and autumn 2000. In November 2001 he gave an anniversary recital at Wigmore Hall, celebrating 50 years since his debut there in 1951.

Sergio, Odair & Badi Assad Websites: www.wikipedia.org

The Assads embark on a North American tour in fall 1995 with engagements that in-clude Toronto's Ford Centre, and performances in Phoenix, Nashville, The Wolf Trap Foundation in Vienna, Virginia, and New York City. In 1993-94, the duo re-turned to Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall in New York. Last season they appeared at Pasadena's Ambassador Auditorium and in San Francisco, Seattle, Miami and New York City. The twentieth century has produced a number of guitar duos formed by happenstance or recording-company intervention. But for Brazilian-born siblings Sergio and Odair Assad, the roots obviously go much deeper. Today's foremost gui-tar duo, the Assads have been credited with doublehandedly reviving Brazilian mu-sic for the instrument. As children, the Assads' mandolinist father guided their dis-covery of Brazilian music. Their uncanny ability to play guitar together soon evi-denced itself, and seven years of study with the classical guitarist and lutenist Mon-ina Tavora (a disciple and former pupil of Andrés Segovia) followed. The Assads' American career began in 1969. Badi Assad has over 16 recordings to her credit.

Eliot Fisk Websites: www.wikipedia.org www.classicalguitarmidi.com www.eliotfisk.com

A creative innovator linked to the great romantic tradition of the past, guitarist Eliot Fisk is one of the most exciting and unique artists before the public today. Known world wide for his adventurous repertoire and willingness to take art music into un-usual venues (including schools, senior centers and even prisons!) he belongs, as his great mentor Andrés Segovia once wrote, “at the top line of our artistic world.” In June of 2006, by order of King Juan Carlos of Spain, Eliot Fisk was awarded the Cruz of Isabel la Cátolica for his service to the cause of Spanish music. Earlier re-cipients of this rarely bestowed honor include Andrés Segovia and Yehudi Menuhin. Eliot Fisk has expanded the repertoire for the guitar enormously through countless ground breaking transcriptions of works by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Mozart, Paganini, and others. Eliot Fisk is founder and director of Boston Guitar Fest, an annual event held in the month of June at the New England Conservatory. This workshop is dedi-cated to exploring new and exciting technical and musical possibilities of the guitar within a broadly international cultural context. Eliot Fisk was the last direct pupil of Andrés Segovia and also studied interpretation under the legendary harpsichordist, Ralph Kirkpatrick, at Yale University from which he graduated summa cum laude in 1976. Called by one New York Times headline “A Fiery Missionary to the Uncon-verted,” Eliot Fisk devotes considerable energy to teaching. He is Professor at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he teaches in 5 different lan-guages, and in Boston at the New England Conservatory. His students have come from all corners of the earth. Many have gone on to become important performers and teachers in their own right.

Four years later he became a student of Spanish Master guitarist Alberto Ponce and, in 1976, was awarded the Licence de Concert de l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. While learning his in-strument, Roland Dyens also studied composition with the renowned teacher, com-poser and orchestra director Désiré Dondeyne under whose guidance he was awarded the first Prize in Harmony, Counterpoint and Analysis. Among the most dis-tinguished awards obtained during the early years of his career, Roland Dyens re-ceived the Special Prize at the International Competition "Città di Alessandria" (Italy) and the Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie Charles-Cros, both in honor of the ma-jor Brasilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. At the age of 25 he became a laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. Paul Galbraith Websites: www.wikipedia.org www.Paul-Galbrath.com

At the age of 17, Galbraith won the Silver Medal at the Segovia International Guitar Competition. Andrés Segovia, who was present, called his playing "magnificent." Galbraith's unique playing position was first revealed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1989. His guitar (designed in collaboration with the late luthier David Rubio) is sup-ported by a metal endpin, similar to that of a cello, that rests on a wooden reso-nance box. The instrument has two extra strings, in addition to those of a normal six-string guitar, one high and one low. Both the guitar's extraordinary design and Galbraith's playing style are considered groundbreaking developments in the history of the instrument, increasing its range to an unprecedented extent. Galbraith has lived in Malawi, Greece, London, and, for the last ten years, Brazil. He was a founding member of the Brazilian Guitar Quartet, playing with them until sum-mer of 2003. His principal teacher, since 1983, has been the Greek conductor, pian-ist and philosopher George Hadjinikos. Galbraith has lived in Brazil with his lutenist wife Celia, and their daughter Luiza since 1996.

He bested an international field of guitarist by playing a broad spectrum of musical genres ranging from traditional South American dance music to his own fingerstyle compositions, which included a blues number he calls Blue Chile. "The biggest thrill about winning Winfield was seeing how much people like my original compositions," Chapdelaine said. His original works, which he has only recently in-troduced to the public, bring together a broad variety of musical styles from classical to country to blues. "I grew up playing pop music in Navy clubs....I needed to find a way to mix the groove and fun of that music with the discipline and expressive beauty of classical music." “Music is fun, if it's not fun, why bother?”

Adam del Monte, adjunct assistant professor, has been on the faculty of the Thorn-ton studio jazz guitar department since 2002, teaching flamenco and coaching the World Guitar Ensemble. Del Monte was both influenced by and inspired the younger generation of flamenco performers who were beginning to depart from the previous virtual space of Spanish flamenco. Del Monte, too, set out in new directions, inte-grating years of traditional and leading-edge flamenco training, as well as expanding his musicianship on the classical guitar. An eclectic awareness of jazz, world music and other contemporary forms led to new, creative renditions of flamenco repertoire. He has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet to compose a pro-gressive flamenco piece entitled Cambio de Aire. He has collaborated with Yusef Lateef and the Atlanta Symphony at the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. His flamenco debut CD on the Spanish label Sonifolk (1998), Viaje a Un Nuevo Mundo (Journey to a New World), was favorably reviewed by Spain's most acclaimed flamenco critic Angel Alvarez Caballero as well as Miguel Mora of El Pais and Alfredo Grimaldos of El Mundo. Other discographies include: A Mel Bay Artist Video Series, A Classical and Flamenco Recital and a GSP classical CD entitled EZORDIO. Adam del Monte plays a flamenco and classical guitar by Francisco Manuel Diaz, Granada, Spain, and a guitar by Boaz Elkayam, Israel.
