COME OUT AND ENJOY THIS 3 DAYS FUN & FRIENDSHIP EVENT

AND SEE SOME GREAT SOFTBALL!

From Sun City Senior Softball Club

– Linda Graham, President –

March 7th, the date for Cancer Survivors’ Day at the Sun Bowl Field in Sun City, is fast approaching. If you have not signed up yet to play in a ball game or to walk with other Cancer

survivors or in a Memory Walk, please contact Linda Graham or Larry Kuberka. All proceeds will benefit the Lymphoma Research Foundation. On line forms can be found on the azsrsoftball.com website under Cancer Survivors.

We have received many positive comments about the new scoreboard (sorry the balls, strikes and outs aren’t a little bigger!) Players have been very excited to learn how to use the new remote to operate the scoreboard and they can even sit in the sun to keep score.

Sun City is looking forward to hosting the

banquet this year as it is the 30th Anniversary of our club a well as the league. Come join us in an old fashioned pot luck. Enjoy a few stories from some of the original players, view our photo album on the “Big Screen”, Welcome new members to the Hall of Fame and enjoy Fried Chicken or Ham with pot luck sides or veggies, salads, pasta and of course dessert! All for only $5 each. (my mouth is watering just thinking about what special dish each player will bring to share!) Oh, did I mention “oldies” with a small dance floor?

DOCTOR’S IN – SPORTS INJURIE S –

NSAIDs: (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) Why I Do Not Recommend Them

NSAIDs Hamper Ligament and Tendon Healing. The following statement comes from a well-known sports medicine book that has gone through five printings. “In spite of the widespread use of NSAIDs there is no convincing evidence as to their

effectiveness in the treatment of acute soft tissue injuries.” (Bruckner, P. Clinical Sports Medicine. New York City, NY: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1995, pp. 105-109.)

This is a true statement, but definitely not strong enough. More appropriate would be something like, – In spite of the widespread use of NSAIDs there is substantial evidence that they hamper soft tissue healing.

It is also reported elsewhere that NSAIDs actually can slow down the healing response while it reduces pain. So as you are trying to heal which do you need or should I say want more-pain relief or healing? I hope you would want both so I would encourage you to consider the whole food supplements that I have at the office to give you the nutrients to repair the tissues that are damaged and also reduce the pain. Ligaplex I is used with the fresh injuries and Ligaplex II is for those chronic injuries that still bother you after you feel it should be healed. Also I have ultrasound with electrical stimulation that several players have found to speed the healing of those tissues as well. And of course I would be remiss if I did not mention that an adjustment of your body, either in the area of complaint or in the area that sends information from the spine to allow the injured area to repair efficiently. And thanks to Bob Dobbins I had to take my own treatment after the workout he gave the green team! Yes, I do know where you are at when you come in with the problems even though I would rather use my empathy than commissary.

Yours in Health, Dr. Terese Farrar (623) 975-4057

AS I SEE IT! ─ Dennis Farrar ─

As another softball season is beginning to wrap up don’t forget that this is not the end. Summer play will begin right after the spring season ends. Be sure to sign up only if you are going to play most of the games for each session. In the past some of the player would play 3 to 6 games and then tell the manager there were leaving. Since both leagues are doing a draft now this could put some teams short of some key playing positions.

Also don’t forget the Team Picture Days which will be on Tuesday, March 17 for the American League, and Thursday, March 19 for the National League. All team pictures will be at Liberty Field in Sun City West and NOT in Sun City as previous years have been.

The Bill Bromley Cardiac Kids Memorial Tournament was a huge success. Over $4,000.00 was raised on Bill’s behalf and donated to the Arizona Heart Foundation. There was a lot of money raised through various drawings and auctions. I was privileged to have won the winning bid on Bill’s ball bag and all of its contents. All in all it was an exciting day with fun and plenty of food for all. If you missed this one, please watch the web site and newsletters for next year’s date.

Finally, since I have some good ole Irish blood in me, my wife, Terese and I would like to wish everyone a St Patrick’s Day. Especially to all the “O’s” and the “Mc’s” in our league, and don’t drink too much of the green Irish beer.

That’s how I see it! Have a good game and get home safe.

SAFETY UP – Rich McAndrews, Sun City West Club President –

As adults we play softball for

many of the same reasons we did when we were kids.

We like to compete, have fun, and continue to share the excitement of playing

a sport we love with our friends. However, no longer do most of us have the same skill levels we had when we were kids. Consequently safety rules have to be administered and hopefully these rules will help in reducing the number of injuries.

A few of the safety rules in place today are, having a double base at 1ST , no sliding into bases, having a scoring line to replace home plate, using a lower compression ball, following a American Softball Association non approved bat list, and evaluating players and placing individuals in the proper leagues.

Can we do more, Yes we can. When reviewing

and adopting new procedures the rules committee of all leagues must continue to evaluate safety. As individual players we need to help one another, let’s call for those fly balls, stop throwing those bats, make sure when setting up the field for the days play all bases are securely sitting on their pegs and of course report anything that appears to be unsafe. ie standing water, holes, sprinklers, wire, etc.

Injuries will always be part of the game. While

it maybe called softball we all know that the ball we play with is hard. Balls can be misjudged, take a bad hop, players will stumble and injuries will result, hopefully minimal. Have fun, Play safe.

SCSSL BOARD – Carol Bowden, League President –

There is always something going on! Why does it seem to me that so much is done FOR the club by so few? Really people, some of you need to get more involved! There is so much to do and so many good people to help, but why haven’t we heard from you? With almost 400 members I would hope many more would “step up to the plate” and volunteer their time. Don’t complain, if you don’t get involved!

Team pictures will be taken March 17 and 19 at Liberty Field. Make sure your uniform is pressed, your smile is bright and the day is sunny. Envelopes will be coming soon for you to get all the information you need to order those snapshots for your grandchildren or great grandchildren!

Our club has donated nearly 600 pounds of food

to the Westside Food Bank since we started. What a HUGE testament to the generosity of our members! Each time I go to drop off food, I am amazed by the number of people who require assistance. It’s not just the elderly or the young families. The down economy has traversed all levels of our community. I am so proud of the SCSSL each time I go to the food bank and am overwhelmed by how much we are appreciated! Good job everyone! For the month of March we will collect pasta and/or similar products. This will be the last month, so let’s give it our best effort.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING THIS A

SUCCESS!!!

Angels in the Outfield Since there are so many new members joining the league, the “Angels” would like to re-introduce themselves. The Angels in the Outfield is a group of individuals who are joined by a common purpose; to support players or their significant others when there is a health issue. We have no meetings. Anyone can belong. Some members make or send cards when someone is ill or had surgery. Many act as our eyes and ears and report to us so we know when to send cards. Some make calls to verify information and confirm it is okay to share. Still others work at our yearly Toys for Kids drive at Christmas time. We have a web site at angelsintheoutfield.com and bulletin boards at each field where information is posted. The “Angels” send $50 donations in a player’s name at their passing. Financial support is strictly through the generous donations from the softball family. You can be an Angel, too. Just keep your eyes and ears open and notify Joyce Fano at 214-2287 or Linda Graham at 974-3793 so we can offer our support.

WOMEN IN SOFTBALL UPDATE

– Laurel Andrews – Women’s softball season began on Nov 15th. The

Season will be ending on March 28 with a final game between the

Flames and the Sparks at 1PM at Liberty Field. This should prove to be an exciting game, since both teams are tied for first place.

There will be an “end of the season” Fun Day held on April 4th. All the players in the

West Valley Women’s League will be mixed up on different teams. We’d like to thank the Women’s Team Sponsors; (Flames) Arvid and Kay Peterson of Award Realty and (Sparks) Larry and Rachael Ott of Larry Ott Realty for their support. Plus, a big thanks to the umpires that give their time to officiate the women’s Saturday games.

SPONSORS UPDATE

– Carol Bowden, League President –

We have added Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel to our billboard sponsors! Look for their billboard in right field in the next few weeks.

As always, when visiting any of the team or billboard sponsors make sure you let them know how much the club appreciates their support. Get your sponsor to join you for the team pictures or invite them to watch you play. They may enjoy getting out of the office for an hour.
