In 1962 the theatre world was shaken from its complacency and abruptly confronted with a new theatrical voice that would change the course of playwriting on a global scale. Edward Albee first made notice with his searing one-act play The Zoo Story which propelled the young playwright onto the international stage in the late 1950s. In just a few short years, he was to write what many critics call his seminal work, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, so named from a graffiti scroll the playwright discovered on the wall at a bar in Greenwich Village.

Today, the play remains a vibrant theatrical experience, challenging both audiences and actors as they explore a love story that exposes both truth and illusion in the face of lost and shattered dreams. In this evening of ‘fun and games’ husband and wife, George and Martha, seek to expose the truth of their lives by entertaining a young professor and his wife for a late evening party of drink and psychological mind games.

What follows is a rapid descent into regret and admonishments of missed opportunities that the characters hurl at each other, in an attempt to wound their prey before becoming a victim of their partners’ disappointments and personal failures. In the presence of such hatred, can this be called a love story? Yes, for I believe that what Albee has written is a blistering exposé of the modern family in search of understanding the trials of a life, full and unrepentant in its need for acceptance and forgiveness, when love is not enough to heal the wounds of living.

Are then George and Martha, everyman and everywoman? The stage often holds the mirror up to life to reflect the society in which we live. George and Martha may not be ‘us’ but may represent all that is needful of truth, not living lives buried in illusion. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? may no longer shock audiences in the same manner as it did when first produced. What does remain, however, is a powerful and at times shattering look at how needful we humans are in finding and accepting love. We are pleased that you, members of our audience, have chosen to experience this theatrical journey. It is one a journey that will not be quickly forgotten.

WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?

Nikki Blue (Stage Manager) is an Equity Membership Candidate and a recent graduate from the University of Central Florida, earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Stage Management. She previously spent eight months as an intern with the Florida Studio Theatre, working on Ruined and Under 6 (Stage Manager), Beehive, and Sylvia. Her college credits include The Pirates of Penzance (Stage Manager), The Lark (Stage Manager), Unloved (Stage Manager), and Manuscript. She owes everything to her Penguin and her family: her biggest fans.

Stephan Jones (George) During his 10-year residence of Central Florida, Stephan has been a regular collaborator with The Cows as Teacher, Fight Director, Cabaret Artist, and Actor. This marks his 10th onstage appearance in the pasture, including: The Odd Couple (Oscar), The Fantasticks (El Gallo), and the title role in Sweeney Todd.

Heather Leonardi (Honey) is nothing short of tickled pink to be returning after her previous Mad Cow productions of Lobby Hero, Dangerous Liaisons, Humble Boy, Stop Kiss, and Mary’s Wedding. Other credits include Trapezium and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Orlando Shakespeare Theater, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival), You Can’t Take it With You, Sideways Stories from Wayside School (Orlando Repertory Theatre) and eight years of productions in the Orlando Fringe Festival. Heather works full time for The Mouse, dabbles in stand-up comedy and enjoys a fine dark chocolate. www.heatherleonardi.me

J. Barry Lewis (Director) is delighted to be working once again with Mitzi Maxwell, an artistic acquaintance from earlier days in New York City. This is Barry’s first production at Mad Cow Theatre and he is pleased to add his name to the list of artists who have had the opportunity to create work for Orlando audiences. Barry presently lives in Lake Worth, FL and serves as the Resident Director of Palm Beach Dramaworks Theate in West Palm Beach. Prior to his work with Dramaworks, he served as Director of Artistic Development and Education at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and Associate Artistic Director of Florida Stage (then known as Theatre Club of the Palm Beaches.) A graduate of Northwestern University, Barry spent his early career in New York City and working at theatres across the country, from California to Maine. When not directing for the stage, Barry serves as a Cultural Officer for the United States Department of Education and Cultural Affairs working with international artists who come to United States as guests of the American Government to meet and establish working connections with like-minded colleagues in the Arts. Barry is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, the governing body of professional stage directors in America.

WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? CONTINUED

Tom Mangieri (Scenic Designer) has been working as a Set Designer, Production Designer and Painter with Central Florida theatre and television for the last 20 years. This is Tom’s fourth production with Mad Cow – and he is looking forward to a productive season. Past projects have included Love Song and The Maids with The Cows, How I Became A Pirate with Orlando REP, and several seasons with Orlando Shakes, Mt. Dora Theatre Company, Theatre Downtown, Orlando Theatre Project, and Lake Highland Prep. As always Tom thanks the team who builds it.

Erin Miner (Lighting Designer) Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? marks Erin’s 50th show with Mad Cow Theatre. She is very excited to be working with Barry. When not wandering the pastures of Mad Cow, she can be found in the fields of Apopka High School as a drama teacher.

Peg O’Keef (Martha) is thrilled to be back at Mad Cow, where she has had the most excellent adventures, including Under Milk Wood, Our Town, Delicate Balance, Happy Days, Antigone, Constant Wife, The Year of Magical Thinking, and most recently The Lion in Winter. In addition to Mad Cow, she is proud to have worked on many local stages, teaches screenwriting and criticism at UCF; and edits copy for the Florida Film Festival. When not immersed in theatre or teaching, Peg works for Fantasy of Flight, indulging her fascination with vintage aviation. She treasures Andy Salter, is cursed by orange cats, and is proud to be a tea lady. She finds herself feeling a surprising affection for Mr. Albee these days.

Grayson Tate (Costume Designer) is joining Mad Cow for her first production. Grayson graduated from Auburn University with her Bachelors in Science in Apparel Merchandising, Design, and Production Management. She is Costume Shop Manager at the Orlando REP.

John Valines (Audio Designer) is the 6th member and “Sound Guy” for Toxic Audio who won the Drama Desk award in 2004 during their Off-Broadway run. He’s also currently the Technical Director for Sak Comedy Lab. John has had the pleasure of working with Stages Repertory, the Colorado Festival of World Theatre, Orlando Fringe, Florida Studio Theatre, The Orlando REP, Impact Productions and the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. John also hosts the popular podcast, Radio Rickshaw for rickshawboy.com.

Timothy Williams (Nick) received a BA in theater from the University of Central Florida and has performed at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Othello, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Measure for Measure, Private Lives, and Arms and the Man. Other credits: Artist’s Collaborative Theater production of The Kentucky Cycle, Mad Cow Theatre’s The Life of Galileo and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Vine Theatre’s Bullshot Crummond, The Turn of the Screw and Fully Committed at the Cape May Stage, and Alpine Theater Project’s productions of Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Godspell, and Stones in His Pockets. Timothy is an improvisational actor at the Walt Disney World Resort, and works outside of theater in commercials, voice-overs, and student films for Full Sail.
