    k1 i PREFACE.

^ I have thought it desirable to puton record the experience described

** in this brochure for several reasons. In the first place, it is well thatmerit should be ascribed where

' merit is due that the discovererof the method of treating cases ofdisease with a remedy derived fromthe infectious principle of the

i disease itself, should . have the* credit of his discovery. This dis-overy

    was made by Hahnemann

and his contemporary disciples,Pasteur, Koch, Behring and Roux,as the last named has had thecandour to admit, have only-trodden in Hahnemann's foot-teps.

    There is truth in the

Hahnemann method of curing likeby like, are the words of Dr Roux.Further, it should be known thatin imitating Hahnemann, the laterinvestigators have not improvedon Hahnemann's methods. Theyhave quite unnecessarily, introducedvivisectional experiments, and theyhave adopted a dosage, and amethod of subcutaneous injection, which are fraught with no littledanger. This danger is admittedly

so great, that in the case of DrKoch's treatment of tuberculosisthe method has been abandoned

by all but a very few practitioners. The homoeopathic preparations aremade in such a way that no crueltyto animals is involved, and nodanger to patients is run. Disease-viruses are treated in the same wayas serpent venoms, and the homoeo-athic

preparations of both retainall the therapeutic properties of theoriginal sources without any oftheir dangers.

This is the first of my reasonsfor putting my experience withthe nosode of whooping-coughinto print

    in order to show that

to homoeopathy and its founder isdue the credit of the discovery thatdisease-viruses, like other poisons, may with safety be converted intoremedies ; and that the late in-

    cursion of old-school medicine into

the fields of seropathy and vaccina-ionsis simply whether wittingly

or not an invasion of the homoeo-athic

    domain.

My second reason is, thathomoeopaths themselves have beenall too slow to take advantageof the enormous power which this

department of their art puts intotheir hands. The single examplewhich I here present will be

sufficient for the thoughtful reader.Given one, all the rest may be

known- I therefore urge on myhomoeopathic confreres to cultivateassiduously this new field, and notleave it to the so-called orthodox

practitioners to exploit in theirown barbarous fashion ; or, still

worse, to adopt their methodsof barbarism in place of the scien-ific

    and enlightened method ofHahnemann.

Yet another purpose may beserved by this book. It isnecessary that the public should bemade acquainted with the powerand possibilities of homoeopathic

therapeutics. Now, whooping-cough is a malady which is knownto everybody, and of which thetreatment can be intelligentlyobserved by any mater-familias.It is a disease which is generallyabandoned by old-school doctorsas beyond the reach of remediesother than sedatives to calm the

violence of the attacks of coughing.Whatever time of the year the

attack commences, it is bound to

last till the following May, is atradition which is not without someauthoritative backing. This bookmay therefore serve in a certain

degree as a popular educator. Asa rule, the general public care little

or nothing about systems of treat-ent; but they do care about

getting cured as expeditiously aspossible. But, in order to securethe latter, the public will have togive some thought to the former. It is the public who are interestedin having successful treatment, much more than it is the professionwho are interested in administeringit. The party in power in medical-circles to-day is an obscurantistparty, whose interest it is to keepstudents and public in the dark asto possible therapeutic reforms. Igive here an instance of successfultreatment by a method which isscouted in the orthodox schools

except so far as it is presentedunder another name, in the crude

methods of serum-injections andvaccinations. If the public wish tobe treated in a civilised and scientific

manner they must bestir themselvesto understand something aboutmethods of treatment, and com-ine

    to demand that their medical

men shall learn the method which

answers best. For the publicshould realise that it is they whoare the masters of the situation,

and that the medical professionare their servants. But servants of

all classes need looking after ; andif the public is neglectful in thisparticular, the public must not be

*I have said above that what I

have here recorded of whooping-cough is only an. example of whatmay be accomplished in the caseof any disease of which there is aninfective principle that may beconverted into a homoeopathicremedy. The late Dr ComptonBurnett has shown to what potentcurative use the nosode of Tubercle

had been put, long before Koch'sTuberculinum appeared on thescene. I hope at no distant dateto show, in the same way, what

    1 8 What is a Nosode?

Leaving on one side the questionof the success or failure of this

method, it has given rise to a largenumber of imitations, including theSerum treatment of diphtheria, theTuberculin treatment of Koch, the Tetanin treatment of tetanus, and the Doyen treatment ofcancer. All this should be veryflattering to homoeopaths. Themethod is peculiarly homoeopathic

it is treating like by like. It is also

    the sincerest form of flattery

    imi-ation

homoeopathy having beenhalf a century ahead of its modernimitators in using disease-viruses asremedies. Homoeopathy has itshydrophobic virus, Lyssin or Hydro-

named the preparation he chiefly-used, Bacillinum ; it has its cancer-viruses, Scirrhinum, Carcinosin,Epitheliomin, Sarcomatin, andothers ; its virus of measles, Mor-billin, and its virus of whoop-ng-cough,

Pertussin. Moreover, homoeopathy has a general termwhich includes all these remediesderived from disease-viruses, theterm Nosode. It is derived from

the Greek word v6o-o y which meansdisease.

It is well that the public shouldbecome familiar with this

term, because it means a source of help

in many forms of disease, acuteand chronic, free from the gravedangers associated with the useof serums, vaccins, and thecrude preparations of Koch andothers. The nosodes of homoeo-athy

are prepared by graduatedattenuation, just like the virulentpoisons vegetable, animal, andmineral

which constitute a largepart of the homoeopathic MateriaMedica. The knowledge of thecurative powers of the nosodes

should also draw attention to thefact that the homoeopath has thisvery great advantage over hisorthodox brother, that he knowshow to prepare remedies for safe

    The revelations in connection with

radium and its emanation are open-ngthe eyes of all intelligent lay

persons to the fact that infinitesimal

amounts may have enormous powerover the human body ; and in timethe orthodox section of the medical

profession may have its eyes openedalso. But unhappily this section ofthe medical profession has fallen intosuch an inveterate habit of sneeringat homoeopathy because it recog-ises

    the power of the infinitesimal*

that it will take a much longer timefor it to take in the significance ofthe truth than it will for the unaca-demic and presumably unprejudicedpublic.

At any rate, homoeopaths havein their knowledge of the infini-esimals

an enormous advantageover their orthodox rivals. It will

be an unpardonable fault on theirpart if they do not make the mostof it, and reap the reward of their

success for the credit of Hahnemann

and his school. L urge with all

    CASES CURED WITH PERTUSSIN.

^^HOOPING-COUGH, aseveryone knows, is an in-ectious

    disease. It is characterised

at the outset by catarrhal symptoms

    which cannot be distinguished from

an ordinary cold in the head. The

catarrh is soon followed by a cough,

at first irritating, but rapidly becom-ng

    spasmodic. When the disease

is fully developed the fits of cough-ng

    are attended with symptoms

it. As my practice is a consultingand not a general one, I do nothave many opportunities of treat-ng

cases of this disease, and myexperience with the remedy is notvery extensive. But it will be found

to be sufficiently striking.I may state here that I have used

the remedy in one preparation onlythe thirtieth centesimal potency.

    Case I.

A- maiden lady,, verging on 60,of very gouty history, a gover-ess

by profession, continued herduties throughout the summer 1905whilst her pupils were under-oing

    an attack of whooping-cough.

    She herself contracted a violent

spasmodic cough, which, the allo-athicfamily doctor pronounced

.to be not whooping-cough.The family moved to their countryhouse in Hertfordshire, and thereMiss H. came under the care of Dr

    X. After due consultation with

the mother of the children, Dr X.

concurred, and found the cough11 not whooping-cough. However, the lady was too ill to leave whenthe term of her service came to an

end ; but after a time she wasthought well enough to be sent tothe seaside, but the cough con-inued

    as before. In London she

    saw a homoeopath, who thought

there couldn't be any whooping-cough in it after all that time. Butthe remedies he gave made no im-ression,

and when I returned totown after the holidays she askedmy opinion on the case. That wason September 28, after she had well-nigh coughed herself to pieces forthree months. She looked com-letely

    broken down. Had violent

fits of coughing ; coughed till sheretched ; did not whoop, but the fitsof coughing sometimes ended in asob. I unhesitatingly pronouncedthe case to be one of whooping-cough, and set about to verify

my diagnosis by the treatment. The patient had had allopathic

cough remedies, and homoeopathiccough remedies, she evidently nowneeded something fresh.

My prescription was Pertussin30, gl. iv. in powder of Sacch. lact.Mitte xxiv., one every 4 hours.

Oct. 3. Cough nearly gone :what there was left of it was quiteeasy and no trouble. The patientwas transformed. A thing to benoted was that since gettingPertussin she had had very copiousexpectoration, which gave greatrelief. Before this she could hardlyget anything up at all.

The improvement went on steadilyunder the

same remedy, and as an oldpatron of hers, Lady , wished

her to take charge of her childrenfor a time, said children having allhad whooping-cough, I allowed herto do so.

All went well till the end of the

month, when an epidemic ofinfluenza broke out in the house, and claimed my patient for one ofits victims. This cleared up quicklyunder Influenzinum 30 ; but theinfluenza, as its evil habit is to wake

up the germs of any old malady thatmay be lurking about, aggravatedthe cough, which started again withsome violence, each cough endingin a sob, or gasp, or sigh.

    Nov. 1 2. Pertuss. 30, every fourhours.

Nov. 23. Expectoration verycopious. Is very well in herself, but has a fearful cough, keeping herawake for one to two hours in the

    night.The conditions being different,

the nosode no longer had completecontrol of the case.

Here I may remark that the useof nosodes in no way excludes the

use of other homoeopathic remedies.Nosodes form a splendid additionto our armamentarium ; but if we

don't know how to supplementthem with other remedies, we arejust as badly off as if we didn'tknow how to supplement otherremedies by the use of nosodes.

I now dropped the nosode andordered Corallium rubrum 30, everyfour hours. The indication for this

remedy was violent spasmodiccough with copious expectoration. Moreover, it was a nervous coughin a nervous patient. That wasNov. 23.

Dec. 7. The cough altered in

two days after beginning the medi-ine.No more fits of coughing.

A little short cough during the day.Expectoration wearing off.

Dec. 13. Cough keeps under.Very, little expectoration. Fromthis time on the cough

    gave notrouble.

sleeps well for a time. The coughis dry, and is brought on by motion.

I may say the family were allo-athsfor the most part, but they

There was nothing very char-cteristicin this cough that I could

then discover, and my first prescrip-ionwas, Stannum 3, gr. v., every

    two hours.

Oct. 4. No change. Nepenthehad to be used.

Now I had to go more deeplyinto the case. One new symptom Ielicited was pricking in the roof ofthe mouth on lying down. I wastold when I first saw the patient,

that she had never had whooping-cough. But when I came to cross-examine, I found that when she hadthe first attack of this cough, tenyears before, the question of whetheror not it was whooping-cough wascanvassed, and all the pros and conshaving been duly considered, it wasdecided in the negative. Shemust have had whooping-coughmany times, if it was, was themother's remark. At any rate, I

thought it was near enough tomake a like, as she had strang-ing

fits with the cough, as if shewould never get her breath. I

    prescribed Pertuss. 30, gl. x. ; aq.gvi. ; 511. every two hours.

that the parents thought they neednot trouble me again.

    On Oct. 8 I received a politenote from Col. P., the patient'sfather : My daughter has im-roved

so much since she has taken

the second remedy, that Mrs P. hasdecided to leave on Tuesday.

I have no doubt whatever that

this was a case of whooping-coughin the first instance, and that this

My next case has no connectionwith whooping-cough infection, butI give it to show that the Law ofSimilars is applicable in all respectsto the use of nosodes as it is to the

use of other homoeopathic remedies. The nosode of a disease will not

cure, or even help, all cases of thedisease from which it is derived ;but, on the other hand, it will curecases of a great variety of com-

possession of Law which gives thehomoeopathist an enormous advan-age

over his old-school fellows, only he must not expect the Lawto work of itself. It needs the useof observing faculties and brains inthe application. All that the old-school practitioner needs is theteaching of his blind authority, andas this is an easier master to obey, the old-school doctor has a big

    Here is the case :

    On Oct. 24 I received a letter

from a lady in the country, Mrs C,saying that her two boys, John, aged 9, and William, aged 6, hadhad bad colds, and had beencoughing for a fortnight. They hadbeen with children who had since

developed whooping-cough. Shedescribed the cough, and asked ifshe should bring them up for me tosee if it was whooping-cough in theircase. I told her I had no doubt itwas whooping-cough, and she neednot bring them.

A new situation having de-eloped,the treatment had to be

    reconsidered. Pertussin had here

completely broken the attack had, indeed, practically cured thewhooping-cough. A remedy wasnow required which should meetthe symptoms of the internal de-angement,

and also, if possible, the cough symptoms as well. Theremedy that I selected for this was

    CHAPTER III.

    CONCLUSION. SOME LESSONS

    FROM THE CASES.

T N relating the above cases we

    have not exhausted the interest

they contain. There are still someuseful lessons in practice to be

    deduced from the observations.

There are several ways in which

    remedies may be introduced into

    the homoeopathic Materia Medica.

The classical way is, of course,

    Hahnemann's original method of

    testings or provings on the

healthy. This he soon found it pos-ibleto supplement, by observations

made on patients under the influenceof a remedy. A remedy given oncertain indications will often remove

symptoms which were not beforeknown to be part of its symptom-list. The observer who watches

the case notes this effect, and he

may prescribe the remedy to anotherpatient presenting some of these newsymptoms. If in the second casethese symptoms are relieved or re-oved,

he is entitled to regard themas part of the drugs symptom-listor pathogenesis, as it is techni-ally

called. Again, when a remedyis given to a patient it may, in

addition to relieving him, exciteother symptoms which are no partof his disease, and are not known

to be part of the drug's causation. These symptoms should be notedand tested in the same way, and if

confirmed in practice, they also maybe added to the drugs symptom-list.

In making use of nosodes, thephysician may proceed in exactlythe same way as with remedies

derived from plants or minerals. The first nosode used in homoeo-athy

was so introduced. Hahne-annhimself proved Psoricum,

and his proving has been the basisof its use in homoeopathy eversince. But this has not been

the case with all the nosodes, and it was not the case with

    Pertussin.

It is self-evident, that every caseof an infectious disease is, in effect,a proving of the infective principle. This being evident, it follows thata symptom-list compiled from thesigns or symptoms of a largenumber of cases of any infectious

disease supplies a solid basis onwhich the homoeopathic physicianmay prescribe its nosode. It alsofollows that the nosode must bemore or less homoeopathic to everycase of the disease.

But the homoeopath can neverlose sight of the necessity of in-

These preparations will not pro-ucethe actual disease, and they

will not endanger the health ofthose who test them ; but theywill produce symptoms, and thesesymptoms are valuable guides totheir use in any morbid condition, whether part of the original diseaseor not. Provings of this kind havebeen mostly made by homoeopathicphysicians on themselves, from thetime of Hahnemann downwards.

Pertussin still remains to betested in this way, or proved ;but in the meantime, the evident

symptoms of whooping-cough, andthe history and diagnosis of whoop-

ing-cough infection may be taken asthe indications for its use, as wasdone in my cases. In the course of

these cases everal symptoms of adistinctive character were removed, which may be tested in future cases, and, if confirmed, may be looked

upon as leading indications for theuse of the nosode. These symptomsare :

    (1) Itching of the palate onlying down at night.

    (2) Stinging pain in or on thechest, with cough.

    (3) Sickness, or feeling of sick-ess,at the end of cough.

    (4) Sobbing or sighing at endof cough.

    68 Conclusion.

    (5) Strangling sensation withcough on waking.

These symptoms I commend tothe notice of homoeopathic physi-ians,

    and ask them to observe

whether their experience confirmsthem or otherwise.

A further important point inhomoeopathic practice is to observethe Relationships of Remedies. It is not often that a single remedywill cure a case of disease. Some-imes

it will even a single dose ofthe remedy. But more often therewill come a time when the remedymust be changed and another given. It is then of great importance to

  • 8/13/2019 Whooping-Cough Cured With Pertussin Its Homoeopathic Nosode

    75/85

    Concltision. 69

know which remedy to select next.It will often happen that the indi-ation

for the next remedy is soclear that there is no room to doubt

which to select. But that is not

always the case : several remediesmay be apparently equally well in-icated.

It is then very useful toknow if experience has proved thatcertain of these agree well with, andcomplement the action of the onewhich has done well but ceased tobenefit. For some remedies agreewell with others ; some arrest theiraction or over-action, or, in otherwords, act as antidotes. If an anti-ote

is required, it is valuable tohave a list of the remedies which

  • 8/13/2019 Whooping-Cough Cured With Pertussin Its Homoeopathic Nosode

    76/85

    70 Conclusion.

have proved antidotal to the remedygiven. I f a complementary remedyis required, it is useful to have alist of remedies which have been

found by experience to follow theremedy well, and carry on its work.

Can we, then, gain any infor-ationon these heads from the

experience of my seven cases ? Ithink we may infer that Pertussin is

followed well by Corallium, Causti-cum, and Podophyllum. At any rate, these remedies acted well after

Pertussin had given marked reliefto the patients.

On the other hand, I think it

    maybe inferred that Infiuenzinum

is in some degree inimical to the

action of Pertussin. An attack of

influenza brought back whooping-cough symptoms in one case whenthese had been nearly cured. Thisattack of influenza was cured with

Influenzinum, and after that Per-tussin could do no more for the case.

With these observations, I placethis small contribution to an im-ense

subject before my readers. With all the earnestness which I

can command, I entreat my homoeo-athic

confreres to give to the useof the nosodes the very deepest andmost careful attention.

    Homoeopathy Explained

    OPINIONS OF THE PRESS

The various chapters of this little volume form clear and easy reading, and introduce some interesting and gossipy information regarding thefoundations of the salient articles of the homoeopathic faith. We havefound them quite entertaining. Medical Press and Circular.

A book called 'Homoeopathy Explained' (Homoeopathio PublishingCompany, 2s. net) has been written by John Henry Clarke, M.D. In theearlier chapters is a brief sketch of the career of Hahnemann, followed bya description of the salient features of his system. Dr Clarke trulyremarks ' that thero is no excuse for any one to either believe or disbelievein homoeopathy ; the proof lies within the reach of any person of intelli-ence,

if he likes to take the tronble to put the principle to the test.'The reader will here find many important questions discussed. MorningPost.

This little book is written to clear away the haziness which pervadesthe minds of many of the general public with regard to principles ofhomoeopathy. The word merely suggests to most people the idea of oneonly of the features of this system of treatment, the ' infinitesimal dose,'but we learn from Dr Clarke s book that there is much in homoeopathybesides this.

. . .The book is not at all too technical, and should interest

if it does not convert. Pall Mall Gazette.

He has marshalled his facts, like the past-master that he is, in areadable and easily understood way. The time has passed when homoeo-athy

can be dismissed as quackery. When a theory or system has forone hundred years withstood the adverse and active opposition of apowerful guild, as homoeopathy has done, then it would appear to theoutside mind that, at all events, it is a case for careful and searchinginquiry. All great discoveries were condemned to begin with, andaccepted to end with. Public Opinion.

The Homoeopathic Publishing Company, London, has sent out asmall book (2s. net) written by Dr John Henry Clarke, and entitled' Homoeopathy Explained,' which expounds in simple and interestingchapters the principles of the therapeutic system thought out by Hahne-ann.

The book should do much to popularise the knowledge of amedical doctrine that has done the suffering world some service, itcomes out opportunely in the year that marks the 160th anniversary ofHahnemann's birth. Scotsman.
