Rationale for teaching PDHPE in Primary Schools

Whole Person Development“PDHPE is directly concerned with

supporting the development of the student as a whole person.

Its implementation has the potential to contribute to improved and on going quality of life for all individuals within the community” NSW PDHP K-6 p.5

Essential Life SkillIt is important to teach PDHPE because it is

an essential life skill. Students who are able to draw on knowledge,

skills, values and understandings about PDHPE should be able to interact effectively with all areas of the curriculum.

Opportunities to LearnA comprehensive PDHPE curriculum

provides opportunities for students to: learn practise and refine their skillsknowledge and values thus providing a solid

foundation for further education and effective participation in society.

Promotes Positive Lifestyle

The teaching of Personal Development Health and Physical Education is valued because:

it is a vital part of the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each child in our community

we want our children to be accurately informed about issues that affect their health, while promoting positive lifestyle attitudes and choices

we see the teaching of PDHPE as a means of providing knowledge
