    M r . P'. M A P E T L A , w h o is a M o s o th o , was born in 1 8 7 9 . W a s tra ined at M o r i j a and L oved a le . L e f t school in 1 9 0 2 . Becam e a teacher in M a s ia n o - kenge V illage , Basutoland. Later he w en t to the T ransvaa l, but a fte r some tim e he re tu rn ed to Basutoland and j o in e d the Basutoland M o u n t e d P o lice , M aseru D eta ch m en t , in 1 9 0 6 . W as transferred to the Post O ffice in 1 9 0 7 . In 190 8 he becam e a teacher at the L e ro th od i T e c h n ic a l S ch ool, a position he sti 11 holds.

In 1 9 1 9 he became leader o f the Cape Branch o f the A frican National C on gress and O rganiser-in-Chief o f the I .C .U . o f A frica . Arrested 23rd October, 1920, for pleading fo r increase o f wages ow in g to the econom ic hardships suffered by the Africans. W on the case inApril, 1921. Was president o f the Eastern Rugby Football Union. Attended Congress meeting at Klipspruit, Johannesburg, 6th O cto ber, 1928, and in 1929 was elected Clerk o f the House until April, 1930.     M r . A . M A S H O K O was born not far from Kimberley. H e has lived all his life in the Diamond C ity and works in Hie Market Master’s Office. Takes great interest in the welfare o f his people. Is a leading member o f the Lutheran Church. Treasurer o f the Diam ond Fields M e n ’s O w n Brotherhood, Kimberley. A keen sportsman and a good tennis player. His first w ife died about 18 years ago, and he is now married to Miss Sarah, daughter o f the late Rev. Poho.

    M r. F .D M U N D S. M B E L E was born at Shilo, in 1X76. Educated at Loved ale. Com pleting his education he was appointed assistant master and principal at the Practicing School at St. Joh n ’s, Umtata. O n account o f poor health he gave up teaching and took up farming- in L ibodc District becom ing very successful. His w ife died in July, 1930. His eldest daughter is a member o f the teaching staff at Lovcdalc. Chairman o f the 'Tcmbuland Agricultural Shows. O ne o f the foremost promoters o f scientific methods in agriculture.

    Nurse P. M B E L L E is a daughter o f M r. and Mrs. I. Bud M belle . H er father has for many years been interpreter at the Supreme Court, Kimberley, and lately has been clerk in the office ol the Secretary for Native Affairs. Nurse M belle was born and educated in Kimberley, and later she took up nursing and is now a qualified nurse working in Pretoria.

    M r . A L E X A N D E R M c J A B A V U was born at Kingwilliamstown in 1889. Attended school at Kingwilliamstown and later was sent to Lovcdalc where he received the 'Teachers’ Certificate. Became a teacher at East London and then at the Lyndhurst Road Public School, Kimberley. In 1914 he returned to Kingwilliamstown to assist his father, the late M r. P. Jabavu, in editing the h n vo. O n the death o f his father in 1921, M r. Ale xandcr M e Jabavu became editor. Is president o f the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ U n ion . A man o f g

    M r. E. T . M DA was horn at Em gontsho, K ingw illiam stow n, in 18 60 . A ttended day-school. In 1 875 his father sent him to Lovcdale fo r higher education. H ere he passed the T h ir d G rade T each ers ’ Examination in tw o years. A fte r leaving school he was em ployed as post office messenger. W h e n the Xosa W ar o f 1877 broke out he assisted the British officers as military interpreter. A t the end o f the war he took up teaching at Fort M alan, n ow one o f the biggest elementary schools. H e resigned and jo in e d the police fo r ce as a constable. O n a visit to P ondoland , the Prim e M inister , Sir John G o rd o n Spriggs, spoke to the N ative C h ie fs w ith M r . M d a as interpreter. Later Sir G o rd o n Spriggs ordered M r . M d a to be transferred to the D epartm ent o f Justice as assistant clerk and interpreter to the C h ie f Magistrate o f the Transkeian T erritories , at a salary fixed by the Prem ier him self. In his new vocation M r . M d a showed great ability and success. H e interpreted fo r all G overn m en t officers w h o visited the Transkei, includ ing the Ministers o f the C row n , the G overn or , K in g E dw ard , then H .R .H . Prince o f Wales, and the present Prince o f Wales. R etired on pension in 1924 at the age o f 6 4 years. Has since occu p ied a scat as m em ber o f the Transkeian T erritor ies G eneral C ou n cil , in w h ich he is prom inent. Showed good exam ple to his people . Was a lay preacher, W esleyan C hurch C ircu it steward and a successful farm er. Address: Umtata, Cape Province.

    M r . W . M K H L O M A K U L U was born at H erschel w here he received his early education. H e went to Johannesburg and jo in e d the C ivil Service in the Native Affairs Departm ent. W as appointed c h i e f clerk to the C h ie f Pass Officer in the N ative Affairs Departm ent, Market Street, Johannesburg, w h ich position he still holds. H e is a sportsman and a good tennis player.

    M r . S C U L L Y M F E K E T O was born in 1865 in T cm b u la n d . O n leaving school he was engaged bv D r. Johnstone at Umtata. A ft e r some years he resigned his appointm ent to speculate in grain on his ow n account. W as very successful and soon became a man o f substance. Is also farm ing on a large scale. M r . H e takes keen interest in the affairs o f his people, and at one time was president o f the A frican National Congress in Natal. H e is an organiser o f chiefs in the same organisation.

Is a foundation member o f the Zulu Sons Benevolent Society. War chairman o f the Johannesburg Branch o f the A frican National Congress. Is a regular con tributor to the Native Press.     M r. 1’ . M K W A L O was born and educated in the Cape Province. At a very early age he jo in ed the Civil Service in the Postal Department, Kimberley, and was a despatching clerk in the telegraphic section for a number o f years, after which he retired and returned to his native place, Pondoland, to become a farmer. H e is now on the Last Rand, near Johannesburg.

    M r . P H I L E M O N M N G Q I B I S A was born in June, 1887. in the Cape Province, and educated at St. Andrew s School, Queenstown, Cape Province. In 1904 he went to Johannesburg and was em ployed as clerk in the M unicipal Office at Vrededorp. In 1908 he was em ployed as clerk at the Central News Agency, w’hich office he still holds. Is choir master and member o f the A .M .F .Church, Klipspruit, near Johannesburg.

    M r. H E N R Y T . M N I N I attended day-school at M ou n t Frerc. A fte r his father’ s death he left school and was engaged as office boy by Messrs. Xietsman and Garner, Mount Frere, at a wage o i £ l per month. M eanwhile he improved his education, and being a young man o f zeal and diligence was promoted to clerk. Resigned and became a speculator. Later he bought a large farm for which he paid cash. l i e rendered much assistance to the poorer members o f the community. Married Miss Sinekc.

    M r. E. C . M N Y A N I was born at Buttcrworth in 1880. Was educated at Healdtown Institution and qualified as a teacher. W hile engaged in his profession he coached himself and passed the M atriculation Examination. Later he was employed as a clerk and interpreter in the Magistrate’s Office, Umtata. Married Miss Nccbetsha, a Blythswood scholar. Eldest daughter is a teacher at Lovcdale Institution. M r. Mnvani takes a keen interest in poultry farming. Very thrifty.     M r. R E U B E N R I C H A R D N A A R E M O C I I l AN \. Born near W o l vehocltStation in the District o f Parys. E du cated in the Cape Province as teacher. Passed the 'Third G rade Teachers* Course. Taught in the O .F .S . a t Jaggersfontein, Bothavillc, Viljocnskroon and Villicrs. Joined the Public Works Department at Roberts Heights, Pretoria, in 1920.

    M r. M . M O C H E R was born in Bloemfontein and educated at Lovcdale Institution. H e passed the Teachers ’ Examination, and for some time he was schoolmaster at the Institution, after which he accepted a position as principal o f the Grcvnpuint Wesleyan M ethodist School, Beaconsficld. Here he remained for a number o f ' years. M r. M och cr is a good musician and a first-class conductor. H e has composed a number o f good songs. I le is also a fine sportsman, a good cricketer anil tennis player. Is now teaching in a coloured school at Springs, Transvaal.

    M r. S 1 F .P H E N M O D IS A P O L I was born in the Orange Free State and educated at Bloemfontein and in the Cape Province. After completing his education he returned to Bloem fontein, where he jo in ed the Civil Service as interpreter in the Magistrate’ s Court.I his office M r. Modisapoli has held for many years. H e takes keen

    interest in the social, political and educational life o f his people in the Orange Free State.

    Dr. D. S. M olem e was born at M afek ing . Is the son o f the late M r. and Mrs. M olem e. His father, w ho was a member o f the Royal Family o f the Barolong T r ib e , was secretary and ch ie f adviser to C h ie f Montsioa o f the Barolongs o f Bcchuanaland. Dr. M olem e was educated at Lovedale where he passed the Matriculation Examination. For some time he was a schoolmaster at Kimberley. In 1914 he went to Europe, and was admitted into the Glasgow University where he studied in the M edical School. H ere he took his. M .B . and C .M . degrees and finally the M .D . degree. B efore returning to South A frica , Dr. M olem e wrote a very important book under the title Bantu— Past and Present. O n his return to South A fr ica he com m enced his practice in M afek in g and from the beginning he distinguished him self as a medical practitioner o f exceptional ability. 11c has a large practice. Is the author o f some useful pamphlets on health. Dr. M olem e is a good speaker and is certainly one o f the foremost leaders o f A frican thought. H e married the daughter o f Rev. M . J. M oshoelc , one-tim e sccrc- tarv, councillor and fr iend o f the late C hief Montsioa. Dr. M olem e has been a member o f Governm ent and other important conferences. Is a very steady young man, a good citizen, very progressive in his ideas, and a fine example o f what an A frican can be -when given an opportunity. Dr. M olem e ’s present address i s P .O . H e is highly respected by the Zulu people. H e is a clerk in the service o f the Ingwenyama Solomon Ka Dini/.ulu in Zululand.

    Dr. JAM ES M O R O K O was born at Thaba N ’chu, Orange Free State, and is related to the late Paramount C h ie f o f the Baro- long. H e received his early education at Thaba ’ N ch u Mission School, later going to Lovcdale Institution, Cape Province, and after some time he was enrolled at the Edinburgh University, Scotland, where he took the F .R .C .S . and h .R .C .P . H e returned to his home and com m enced his practice, became very successful and was in great demand. T h r e e years ago he returned to Scotland for further qualifications. H e returned in 1930. Dr. M orok o , w h o is now married, is a very bright young man, very progressive and takes a keen interest in the welfare o f his people, socially, educationally and politically. H e is held in esteem by a large circle o f friends, both white and black. D r. M orok o s fam ily is a sporting fa m ily ; his mother was the owner o f a number o f race-horses that were well-known throughout South A frican racing circles. T h e fam ily owns large farms in the Thaba ’ N chu district.

    M rs. D . M O N T S I O A is a daughter o f the late Rev. Gabashanc, o f the A .M .E . Church, and is the w ife o f Advocate D .G . M ontsioa, o f Johannesburg. M rs. Montsioa was a school teacher for a num- o f years, later she became matron at the W ilb er fo rcc Institution, Kvaton, I rans- vaal. She is an active church member and secretary o f the Johannesburg district conferences o f the W o m e n ’s H om e and Foreign Missionary Society o f theA .M .E . Church in South A frica . She is a social worker and resides at Rand- fontein , Transvaal.

    Rev. M . M . M O K O N K , son o f Maake, son o f Kgake, son o f Ngatc, son o f M alobe, son o f Moncjiwcta, son o f M anpuru , son o f M ohlokudeshe, son o f M ok on e , was born at Bokgaga, Transvaal, between M ay and |unc, 1 K S 1. H is m other was the daughter o f Sephate. H is father was killed in the Swazi W ar o f 1863. In the year 1870 you n g M okon e went to Pietermaritzburg, Natal, to work in order to buy a rifle. H e fou n d work in the sugar plantations o f M r . Acutt. His salary was ten shillings per month. A fte r six months having earned £6 he le ft fo r Durban

    where lie was em ployed by M rs. J. S. Steel. Attended night school and as a pupil made w on derfu l progress, learning had the same effect to him that cold water has to a thirsty person. In 1874 he was baptised by the Rev. Dam on H hongw ana. In 1 875 he returned to Pietermaritzburg where he jo in e d classes in elementary theology. H e com m enced preaching about the same time, his first sermon being fou n d in St. M atthew , Chapter V ., verse 30 :— “ And i f thy right hand ofTend thee cut it o f f , and cast it from thee; fo r it is profitable for thee that one o f thv members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.”

    For three years he remained a pupil under Rev. H longwana and R ev . H . M . Cam eron, during which period he continued preaching. H e was especially endow ed with spiritual power in preaching. O n on e occasion during the night service he had his congregation on their knees all in tears, until the neighbouring Europeans were draw n to the scene anti one shouted, “ Vuka, boy! vuka b oy ! ” ( G e t up, boys! get up, b o y s !) “ Poor niggers, lying on their guts.” R ev . R ow e, the European Missionary Superintendent, was sent f o r and requested to replace the “ boy ” M okone by a better man w h o would not frighten the poor creatures with hell-fire.

    In 1880 the Annual C on feren ce o f the Wesleyan M ethodist C h u rch assembled in Pietermaritzburg. M okone, w ho was not a m em ber o f the C on feren ce , went to his work as usual. Rev. O w e n Watkins, w h o was attending the C on feren ce , urgently sent for M okone. IVIokonc was rushed into the C on feren ce still wearing his carpenter s apron. H e was examined and found com petent. Subsequently he was appointed to Swaziland, but ow in g to the Fnglish anil Dutch W ar o f 1880 he failed to carry out his appointm en t . Was then sent to Newstead, Natal, where he remained aintil 1882. f r o m this circuit he was appointed as first native
