Tim Richardson: Chairman’s Welcome

Welcome to you all and our local visitors from Penryn Athletic, who are having another good season and currently lie in 3rd place, four points ahead of us.

Today we start the second half of the League season and it’s also the first of three Saturday home games. Next Saturday we play Holsworthy in the League, having beaten them 2-0 here on January 2nd in the League Cup, which was Steve Parker-Billinge’s first match in charge. Then on 4th February the visitors are Wendron United in the Charity Cup quarter final - we’ve already recorded a League double over them, 3-0 at home in August and 2-1 away the week before Christmas.

Then it’s FOUR consecutive away games for the rest of February, with trips to Plymouth Marjon, Holsworthy and Elburton Villa in the League, and Bodmin Town in the League Cup quarter final. Details are on page 2 of this programme.

In our last two fixtures (see match reports on pages 7 & 15) we’ve done well for about three-quarters of the game, but then suffered from tiredness and inexperience - not really surprising with so many players stepping up two divisions from the Reserves. It’s really good to see the Reserves being given a chance, even if it is in unusual circumstances. I’ve got no doubt these lads will get a lot of benefit and be able to develop their game at the higher level.

A warm welcome to “flying winger” Connor Davey, the first new signing under SPB’s regime. - and Penzance’s best player in their game at Trungle Parc last year. On the ‘departures’ front, the only matters confirmed at present are Tim Nixon to Bodmin Town, and Mark Vercesi and Liam Andrew to Penzance. We’ll publish any more transfers as soon as they become official.

There have been lots of recent messages of support for our club and also appreciation for the official statement we published about the managerial changes. Despite massive upheaval over the New Year period, together with the speculation and forecasts of doom and gloom, we’ve tried to get on with matters in a decent way, and I’m pleased to say the image of Mousehole AFC as a club that ‘does things the right way’ has been enhanced.

Mousehole Women had a great 8-0 home win over Wadebridge last Sunday (match report on page 25), and tomorrow they make the short trip to Mullion (2.30pm). See all their results and fixtures on page 27.

Mousehole Reserves resume fixtures next Saturday at St Buryan (2.30pm) after the Trelawny League granted a two-week break to recruit new players.

History man Sean Perrott’s Part 7 of The Seagulls’ early history is on page 14 - how good it was in Part 6 to learn of the victory over Penzance in 1923!

Finally, a word about our supporters. Millbrook were very warm in their praise for the turn-out and noise last week - ”the best away support we’ve seen all season”. So credit due to you all, especially with such a long journey.

Cheers, Tim

THE BOSS’s BLOG: NEW PLAYER-MANAGER STEVE PARKER-BILLINGE

After three games, it’s mixed emotions!

Firstly, I am unbelievably proud both of the senior players who’ve dug in and helped with various things both on and off the pitch, and also the players who’ve stepped up to be involved in the recent

games and given their all.

Secondly, I’ve been used to being in a winning team that’s playing well - so it’s a bit of a change having to motivate the players and

try to put together a full squad each week.

Before the match against St Dennis, I would have taken a 2-2 draw as a good result, given the week we’d had as a club. However, the way we played in the first half, we could have been 4-0 up and put the game out of reach. Although we came out in the second half and scored a second, we ran out of steam after 70 minutes. The last 20 minutes felt like the Alamo and we soaked up a lot of

pressure, but inevitably St Dennis scored twice to level the game.

That game showed me the fighting spirit of both players and supporters, and made me realise that

recent events have brought the club closer together.

Last week’s 4-1 Senior Cup defeat at Millbrook was a typical end-to-end cup game that must have been great to watch from a neutral’s point of view. Our travelling support seemed 4:1 in our fa-vour. With the wind howling down the pitch behind us, I felt we needed to go in with a half-time lead to have a chance, but instead it was 1-0 to Millbrook. After some stern words at half time and a change of shape, we drew level. We knew it was going to be a very tough test going into the last 20 minutes, as the St Dennis game had shown, and with tired legs and little bit of a lack of

experience, we conceded some sloppy late goals.

Being out of the cup - which, realistically, we weren’t going to win this year - gives us more of a

focus now on developing our squad and consolidating our league position.

We are already bringing in new players. The first official signing is Connor Davey, a pacy winger I

played with a few seasons ago and was last with Penzance. He’s available for today’s squad.

These additions will improve the squad and add a little more experience at this level, alongside Billy, Frazer, Kevin and Karl who are our experienced senior players and have helped out tremendously over the recent weeks. Josh is also now quite experienced, despite his tender age,

and his performances over the last few games have been outstanding.

Overall, I think the club has pulled together through a tough time and the players, supporters and committee have been fantastic. I couldn't be prouder to be part of such a great club and wish to

say a great big thank you for everyone’s support and kind words.

THE LANGUAGE OF FOOTBALL MANAGERS

20 of the best, selected from ‘Pulled off at half time’ - Sevenoaks Publishing - following the piece in the last programme on ‘The Language of Football Commentators’

“I felt a lump in my mouth as the ball went in.” “My team are winners - they’ve finished 4th, 3rd and 2nd in the last three seasons.” “We changed to a back four and went 4-4-3.” “Though we’re playing Russian Roulette we’re obviously playing Catch 22 at the moment.” “I’m not superstitious, but I hope we ‘ll play our best and put it in the lap of the gods.” “Very few of us have any idea whatsoever of what life is like living in a goldfish bowl - except, of course, for those of us who are goldfish.” “I was a young lad when I was growing up.” “Of the nine red cards this season we probably deserved half of them.” “Some of our players have got no brains, so I’ve given them the day off tomorrow to rest them.” “When a player gets to 30, so does his body.” “I can count on the fingers of one hand, ten games where we’ve caused our own downfall.” “It’s thrown a spanner in the fire.” “He’s taken to English football like a duck out of water.” “If we played like this every game, we wouldn’t be so inconsistent.” “What I said to the team at half-time would be unprintable on the radio.” “The lads ran their socks into the ground.” “He’s got a groin strain and he’s been playing with it.” “I went down to the dugout to give them some technical advice. I told them the game had started.” “They had a dozen corners. Maybe 12, I’m guessing.” “The first goal was pure textile.”

MILLBROOK 4-1 MOUSEHOLE

CORNWALL SENIOR CUP (sponsored by RGB Building Supplies), THIRD ROUND

AT JENKINS PARK, SATURDAY 14TH JANUARY 2017

In the clash of fellow West Division clubs, with Millbrook having their best season for years in sixth place just behind The Seagulls in fifth, the hosts faced a threadbare Mousehole match-day squad containing just eleven players - five regular starters, six players promoted from the

Reserves, and no substitute.

In the circumstances, this was a valiant performance by a patched-up side suffering from the sudden loss of half a dozen players following the unexpected departure of Wayne Quinn and

Mark Vercesi, and the unavailability on the day of several other experienced squad members.

New player-manager Steve Parker-Billinge has by necessity given first-team game time to a large number of Reserves’ players in his first three matches in charge, and he will have been able to assess their potential to stake a claim in the first-team squad and prove their capabilities

in stepping up two leagues, as well as paving the way to bring in reinforcements from elsewhere.

Millbrook were on the front foot from the outset, dominating possession and creating chances with swift movement. But Parker-Billinge in goal and captain Billy Curtis in central defence ex-celled in an overworked Seagulls’ defence, restricting the hosts to a 1-0 interval scoreline, a

carefully-placed 20-yard free kick in the 31st minute.

Mousehole were under extreme pressure again in the opening period of the second half, with more last-ditch clearances, but they showed great resilience and character to come back strong-ly into the match just after the hour. The impressive Josh Otto set up a chance for Jamie Simons which went just wide, Frazer Cadman also come close with a drive, and Simons was felled on

the edge of the area when in on goal.

But then clever play by Kevin Lawrence enabled him to get in a left-footed shot parried by the goalkeeper and Jamie Simons was in the right place to prod in the equaliser in the 66th minute, his second goal in two games since coming into the side, much to the delight of the large number

of vocal supporters making the 150-mile round trip and outnumbering the home fans.

However, hard-running Millbrook struck again to regain the lead three minutes later, and made the game safe on 76 minutes as The Seagulls’ brave resistance weakened, and although

Simons had another chance at the other end, it became 4-1 in the 90th minute.

Mousehole: Steve Parker-Billinge (gk), Matthew Howes, Tom Hooper, Billy Curtis (captain), Luke Nowell, Kevin Lawrence, Nathan Goodspeed, Frazer Cadman, Jason Simmons, Jamie

Simons, Josh Otto. Scorers: Mousehole - Jamie Simons (66). Millbrook - 31, 69, 76, 90.

Referee: Steven Nute. Assistant Referees: Jack Borlase & Simon Robbins

MOUSEHOLE WOMEN 8-0 WADEBRIDGE LADIES CORNWALL WOMEN’S LEAGUE (sponsored by Pirate FM) SUNDAY 15TH JANUARY 2017 AT TRUNGLE PARC, PAUL

Dominant Seagulls in another high-scoring victory

After defeat at high-flying Bude Town the previous week, Mousehole Women consolidated their fourth place in the League table with a comprehensive win over mid-table Wadebridge at Trungle Parc on Sunday. In cold, bright but very windy conditions, it took some time for The Seagulls, playing with the wind mostly at their backs, to settle into their customary passing style. Nevertheless, it was 3-0 at the half-time interval, a scoreline that scarcely reflected Mousehole’s superiority but did credit to the visitors’ massed defence. Playing into the wind, the second half was a different story, with the hosts producing more measured passing and pressing forward at every opportunity against an increasingly tiring side. With regular goalkeeper Lynsey Mayers absent through illness, four of the outfield players took a turn between the sticks, but without seeing enough action to keep them warm. Having had the first stint in goal, Katy Barker resumed her usual forward position, scoring two first-half goals and five in total. Jo Barker also got a first-half goal and Sophie Wilson claimed two late on. The game was also notable for an attendance of 26, which exceeds what five Peninsula West Division teams have managed in League games this season! Mousehole now have 27 points from 12 games and are nine points ahead of Falmouth in fifth place from the same number of games. THE HISTORY OF MOUSEHOLE AFC: PART 7

By Sean Perrott from his research at Morrab Library, Newlyn & Mousehole Archive and elsewhere

The 1922-23 season over, this is what else was happening in the world of Association Football…...

Local rivals PAUL “concluded a successful season with a well-attended social and dance in the parochial schoolroom” that included a fancy dress section won by Miss Irene Nicholls. Later in the summer, at Paul’s annual meeting, a credit balance of £10 2s. 2d. was reported. Mr. Jack Carne, last year’s top scorer with 23, will be captain, and Mr. E. Glasson, vice-captain.

On Saturday, 28th April, 1923, BOLTON WANDERERS beat WEST HAM UNITED 2-0 in the White Horse Final at Wembley.

ST. BURYAN finished up their season with a business meeting, tea and social gathering, held in the Institute. In the West Penwith League they had played 16 games, winning 6, losing 8, with two draws. The hon. treasurer’s report showed a balance in hand of £14 after payment of expenses amounting to £50. A tea followed and then a social, in which songs were sung by Rev. A. Cornish (Rector of St. Buryan), and Messrs. Warren and Shannon. Mr. J. Phillips also gave two mouth-organ solos, and a dance concluded the evening’s proceedings. Mrs. A.T. Jago accompanied the musical items on the piano.

Meanwhile, PENZANCE were in dire straits…

Sir, - In reply to your letter re: sports field, I am instructed by the committee of the Penzance A.F.C. to inform you that, at a special meeting held to-day, to consider its position, the 1922-23 committee owing to financial difficulties cannot see its way to undertake the responsibility of running a club next season, and that, whilst regretting its inability to meet immediately the half-yearly rental now due, it is taking steps to raise the money and hopes to be able to meet the liability in the near future. J.H. Hardy, Assistant Secretary Retiring Committee, Penzance A.F.C., Penzance, July 23, 1923.

MARAZION WORKING MEN’S CLUB are to run a football team for the 1923-24 season. Mr. W.H. Uren (Longrock) offered the use of the old football ground opposite Marazion cemetery, which the committee gratefully accepted. It was decided to enter the Junior Cup League and West Penwith League.

Not much to report from MOUSEHOLE, unless you count the momentous announcement on Saturday 22nd September, 1923…of which more next time.

MOUSEHOLE 2-2 ST DENNIS

South West Peninsula League West Division, Saturday 7th January 2017

Seagulls grab great point after turbulent week

After an unsettling week in which several players were said to be on the verge of leaving the club in the wake of player-manager Wayne Quinn’s sudden resignation, new player-manager Steve Parker-Billinge faced a big challenge in assembling a squad for his second match in charge. The new boss called up into the First team squad five players from the Reserves, who play two divi-sions below in the Trelawny League Premier Division, but was still able to name only 12 on the

team sheet, including second-string goalkeeper Adam Roberthan.

The game marked the exact half-way point in the League season. In the circumstances, a 2-2 draw against experienced visitors St Dennis was a creditable performance and the result provides

some optimism that The Seagulls can move on after major and unexpected personnel changes.

Matt Howes and Caleb Marsden had already had a few tastes of first-team action this season, but Luke Nowell and Jamie Simons stepped up for the first time, and it was Simons who put the home

side ahead on 26 minutes with a close-range shot after good work by Lewis Caspall on the left.

The first half was evenly contested, with good chances created and both goalkeepers regularly tested, and just before half-time both Marsden and Simons had shots blocked in front of goal. St Dennis came out strongly at the start of the second period, but Caspall got Mousehole’s second

on 52 minutes with a crisp low shot after the battling Marsden had set up the chance.

The tough-tackling visitors stepped up the pressure and Parker-Billinge had to be at his very best to keep out a series of goalbound attempts around the hour mark. But a few minutes after replacing the tiring Simons with Roberthan to play as a sole striker, Mousehole had their lead halved through Carl Rickard after 70 minutes. St Dennis then dominated the last 20 minutes, drawing an exceptional save from Parker-Billinge and hitting the bar, but after equalising in the 81st minute when Rickard’s shot bounced into the net after a ricochet, they were again thwarted in

the closing minutes by heroic goalkeeping.

In a game that they could have won or lost, Mousehole got their first draw for nearly two years, and Parker-Billinge was in upbeat mood: “It’s been a great day considering the week we’ve had. I couldn’t be prouder today of the players, the committee or the fans (who were amaz-

ing). Hopefully, it instils belief and a ‘can do’ attitude within the changing room.”

NOTES ABOUT PENRYN ATHLETIC

This is the second League meeting between the two clubs this season.

The first match at Kernick on an early September evening resulted in a

2-0 Mousehole win, with second half goals by left-back Jamie Devine and

substitute Dan Magee. This was The Seagulls’ seventh consecutive win

from the start of the season, but the run came to an abrupt end the

following Saturday with a 4-0 home defeat by Sticker.

Despite occupying third place at present, Penryn have had a mixed season in the League,

having won 11, drawn 5 and lost 7 of their 23 games. They have played six more games than

Mousehole but are only four points ahead.

The Athletic had a good October, with four wins in a row and some big scores, notably 6-3 at

Holsworthy, 7-0 at Bude Town and 4-2 at home to St Dennis. By contrast they lost three

consecutive games in December - all away, at Porthleven, Plymouth Marjon and Illogan RBL.

However, they made amends on New Year’s Eve with a resounding 7-1 defeat of bottom club

Penzance, the result being followed by the departure from Penzance of manager John Dent.

Since then Penryn have lost 3-0 away at Sticker, but last Saturday they beat Holsworthy 5-0 at

home to complete a League ‘double’ with an aggregate score of 11-3.

After today, they have 10 games remaining, including home and away against current second

place Elburton Villa and away at fourth place Plymstock United.

Penryn were knocked out of the League Cup in the first round 2-0 at Illogan. In the Senior Cup

they also went out in the first round, beaten 2-1 at home by Premier Division Launceston. They

are still in the Charity Cup after a 4-1 win at Cornwall Combination side St Agnes, and are away

to another lower division side, Polperro of the East Cornwall League, in the quarter finals on 4th

February.

Leading scorer is Luke Brabyn with 13 goals. Home attendances average 72 - the highest be-

ing the 122 for the Mousehole match in September. They lead the West Division disciplinary

table with only 14 yellow cards and no reds.

Last season Penryn finished fourth with 19 wins and 9 defeats, four points ahead of Plymstock

and 13 behind Sticker. The Seagulls recorded a ‘double’, winning 2-1 at Kernick in September

with a last-kick winner by Tim Nixon after Penryn had equalised seconds before, and 1-0 at

home on a late April evening with another Nixxy goal..
