What is the role of a film distributer in the UK?

It is the role of the distributer to provide the largest possible audience for a film. The distributer would try to incorporate the films target audience into its marketing strategies in order to advertise the film to the correct people. They also have the job of getting the film screen time in cinemas and try to get the film noticed and ‘out there’. The success of the film can also hinge on how well the distributer performs for example it is not uncommon for a film to raise more than 30% of its revenue in its first weeks box office receipts.

What type of film have a I created and who would distribute it?

I have made a low budget independent British film and therefore my film would be distributor by quite a small distribution company. A company that I believe would distribute a film such as mine would be that of ‘Revolver Entertainment’. Revolver is quite a small production company and have distributer all be it unsuccessfully low budget independent films such as ‘Iron Sky’. They have also distributed films like mine with the same urban feel and gritty thriller genre such as ‘Offender’ which has a similar concept and genre to my film. They also distribute many British films which means they would be a good match for distributing my film and have experience with distributing films of similar budgets and genre and are a well known and award winning distribution company.

Another option… Another option in terms of a distributor for my media product would be that of Film 4. They are again another british distribution company which would be a good match for my production company. They also, have successfully distributed films such as Danny Boyles ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and they would be a good choice in terms of a distribution company as they have previous success in reaching target audiences and maximising films profits at box office.

HOWEVER..

Revolver entertainment is a better fit to distribute our film as Film 4 works with films on larger budgets compared to Revolver which has worked with low-budget independent films such as ‘Iron Sky’ it has also distributed films such as ‘ill Manors’ which have a similar genre, setting, narrative and target audience as our film making the company a good fit.
