Thomas GouldDespite the persecution from the Puritans in Boston, Thomas Gould held services in his house. In 1665 he organized the first Baptist church in Boston, and they built a separate meeting house.Gould was imprisoned and his church was threatened, but they persevered and eventually his church gained freedom to worship freely in Boston.



Isaac BackusInfluenced by the Great Awakening and saved in 1741, he attended a Congregational church for 10 years. For the latter five of those years, he was the pastor.In 1751 he became a Baptist and started a church in his house a few blocks away with some Native Americans. He was an advocate for the separation of church and state during the formation of the new nation.

John LelandOriginally from Massachusetts and raised by Congregational parents, he spent 15 years in Virginia before moving back to Massachusetts. He was good friends with James Madison and Thomas Jefferson and influenced them to advocate for religious freedom both in the Virginia constitution and the U.S. Constitution.

Adoniram Judson and Luther RiceBoth Judson and Rice were commissioned as Congregational missionaries to Burma. However, knowing that they were going to join Baptist missionaries in Burma, they both studied what Scripture says about baptism during their respective voyages. Both of them became Baptists and were immersed, and they both led the way for American foreign missions among Baptists.
