Who We Are: Global Contributors We are on the final stretch to summer vacation but still as busy as ever! Here is an overview of our 5 th unit of inquiry, “Who We Are: Global Contributors.” Central Idea: Individuals can have an impact on their local and global communities. Lines of inquiry: Our responsibility to contribute to our communities How individuals can have an impact Contributors past and present Challenges in becoming a leader Learner Profile Attributes: Caring, Principled Concepts; Perspective, responsibility Student questions: How can one person make a difference? How can we be global contributors? How can local communities make a global impact? How can we stop people and make them help our earth? During this unit, students will be reflecting on how their responsibilities as contributors everywhere from their homes to their global community. They will be reading biographies of various contributors and taking notes about how they impacted the world and the challenges they had to overcome, and writing a speech to present dressed up as this contributor. We will also be planning a field trip, and students chose to participate in a reforestation project. We talked about raising money and they would like to have a bake sale where they want to sell food, origami and handmade jewelry. At the end of the unit, students will create a glog using Glogster sharing how they can be contributors today and how they play to contribute in their future. Math We begin Unit Six in Bridges, titled “Get Those Marbles Rolling.” This is an integrated math unit that includes scientific research; specifically physics, linear measurement, mass, data collection, analysis, and graphing. Please continue to send in paper towel and toilet paper tubes! It should be a lot of fun. Language Arts At the beginning of the unit, we’ve been continuing our study of characters and character traits and applying these traits to the global contributors we have been learning about. We are using Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast different characters from our reading. We will also be reading books about various contributors and about students who have made differences in their communities. In writing we have been focusing on sentence fluency and when we write our speeches, we will focus on organization and voice.
