Who was responsible for

the death of Jesus?

Lesson Four:The Jews and Us.

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?“ They said, "Barabbas!" 22 Pilate said to them, "What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?“ They all said to him, "Let Him be crucified!" 23 Then the governor said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out all the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"

Matthew 27:20-23 (NKJV)

24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it." 25 And all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children." 26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.- cf. Deuteronomy 19:16-20

Matthew 27:24-26 (NKJV)

34 Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Matthew 23:34-36 (NKJV)

"The soldiers, out of the rage and hatred they bore the prisoners, nailed those they caught, in different postures, to the crosses for the sport of it, and their number was so great that there was not enough room for the crosses and not enough crosses for the bodies." - Titus Flavius Josephus (66-73 A.D.)

Jews crucified during the first Jewish-Roman War (Jewish rebellion against Rome)

25 And all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children." 26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.

Matthew 27:25-26 (NKJV)

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach

to any people.

Proverbs 14:34 (NKJV)

"Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this

Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

Acts 2:36 (NKJV)

14 But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses. 16 And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know [a lame man was healed; v. 7]. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

17 "Yet now, brethren, I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.

Acts 3:14-18 (NKJV)

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1 Corinthians 2:7-8 (NKJV)

33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

- cf. 1 Timothy 1:12-15; Acts 7:51-60

Luke 23:33-34 (NKJV)

22 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know 23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you [the Jews] have taken by lawless hands [the Gentiles], have crucified, and put to death.

Acts 2:22-23 (NKJV)

25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: 'Why did the nations rage, and the people plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ.' 27 "For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. - cf. Psalms 2

Acts 4:25-28 (NKJV)

1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Isaiah 53:1-3 (NKJV)

4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 53:4-6 (NKJV)

7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they made His grave with the wicked — But with the rich at His death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.

Isaiah 53:7-9 (NKJV)

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 53:10-12 (NKJV) “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory

of God” – Rom. 3:23

“The wages of sin is

DEATH…” – Rom. 6:23

Verse One: “I was not in the garden when He knelt to God and prayed, I did not kiss Him on the cheek when Jesus was betrayed; I could not do a single thing to hurt God’s only Son, but every time I sin on earth I feel that I’m the one.”Verse Two: “I was not at the trial when the crowd jeered at His name, I did not make Him bear a cross or walk a road of shame; I could not do a single thing to hurt God’s only Son, but every time I sin on earth I feel that I’m the one.”Verse Three: “I was not on the hillside when He gave His life that day, I did not nail His precious hands or take His robe away; I could not do a single thing to hurt God’s only Son, but every time I sin on earth I feel that I’m the one.”

Chorus: “I’m the one, who shouted “crucify,” I’m the one, who made His cross so high, I’m the one, who stood and watched Him die; What have I done? I’m the one.”

“I’m the One”

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.- cf. Hebrews 10:26-31

Hebrews 6:4-6 (NKJV)
