WHO IS CORRECTExploring the: Triangle Inequality Theorem
Who is Correct: SCENARIO
Sarah claims that any three lengths will determine three sides of a triangle. Sam does not agree. He thinks some combinations will not work.
WHO IS CORRECT? Remember, you need one counterexample to
disprove a statement.Sam claims that he can just look at the three
lengths and know immediately if they work. Sarah is unsure. She decides to explore this for herself.
Directions:
1. Every student will receive a piece of linguine.2. Every student will receive a ruler.3. All pieces of pasta MUST end up in the trash (or
else I will be reluctant to EVER use food in the classroom EVER again) Next time it would be candy… Don’t ruin this!
4. Every student will receive the written directions.5. Read steps 1 and 2 quietly as we read them
allowed.
Steps 1 and 2
To begin you will need a piece of pasta. Break the pasta at TWO random points so the strand is divided into three pieces.1) Try to form a triangle from your three pieces
of pasta.2) Measure each of your three pieces in

3) Collection of data

Complete 4 – 6.
Wait until everyone has finished up to question 6.
