The award was based on the large number of positive reviews that we received from students, alumni, volunteers and donors. Josue Castillo wrote, “As a first generation, low-income student, I found it hard to stay focused in school. It wasn’t until I found 10,000 Degrees that my life turned around and I found the motivation to continue fighting to achieve my dreams.”

Featured in Marin Independent JournalOn June 23, 2015 10,000 Degrees was the cover story of the Marin IJ with the headline “Marin nonprofit 10,000 Degrees has helped students fulfill college dreams for more than 3 decades.”

Press Democrat PraiseOn the occasion of its 15th anniversary, the 10,000 Degrees Institute was featured as a cover story of the Empire News section of The Press Democrat, entitled “A Leg-up for College.” Reporter Jamie Hansen attended the Bite of Reality program sponsored by Redwood Credit Union, part of the 10,000 Degrees Summer Intensive.

10,000 Degrees student Sonia Perez and her mentor Dolores Cortes-McPherson were featured in a special section of The Press Democrat about mentor relationships, called Shared Success. “Perez credits 10,000 Degrees with keeping her focused and on track to attend college, the first in her family to seek higher education.”

Charity Navigator Highest Rating

Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator, again awarded 10,000 DEGREES its prestigious 4-star rating for sound fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency.

“10,000 DEGREES’ coveted 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” according to Ken Berger, President and CEO, Charity Navigator. “Out of the thousands of nonprofits Charity Navigator evaluates, only one out of four earns 4 stars.”

10,000 Degrees President and CEO Kim Mazzuca earned both regional and national awards, including:

The National College Access Network (NCAN)’s 2015 Executive Leadership of Excellence Award. The award recognizes “the individual’s personal service and commitment to the organization, service to the community, and contributions to the field of college access.”

“Kim is a leader in college access and success both in California and nationally,” said NCAN Executive Director Kim Cook.

Legislative Woman of the Year. Assemblymember Marc Levine (D-San Rafael) named Kim the Woman of the Year from the 10th Assembly District (Marin County and southern Sonoma County) for providing outstanding women’s leadership in our communities.

North Bay Leadership Award. Kim was honored as one of the recipients of the North Bay Business Journal’s 2014 Nonprofit Leadership Awards and her profile was published in a special report in the Business Journal.

Lisa Carreño, Regional Director for Sonoma County was presented the “Caught in the Act of Leadership” Award by the North Bay Leadership Council. This award, recognizing “Individual Excellence in Leadership,” is part of the Council’s annual “salute to individuals and organizations from the region that have been positive catalysts for change.”

Graham Brandt, Former Chair of the Board of Directors, was recognized with a Spirit of Philanthropy Award at National Philanthropy Day ceremonies in San Francisco last November.

OUR ANGEL INVESTORS

The College Education Opportunity Fund was launched to raise growth capital to expand what 10,000 Degrees does best: enable thousands of young people to go to college and change the world.

In 2010 an Angel Investor made an initial $1 million investment in the organization to establish a pathway to growth for the next ten years. From this foundation, other dedicated Angel Investors joined the cause, enabling 10,000 Degrees to apply its winning formula to tackling the educational opportunity gap in the North Bay and beyond.

Thanks to their leadership and generosity, we raised $4 million in Phase I of the growth fund, and will be launching Phase II in the year ahead.

The Pay It Forward Award was dedicated to our nearly 500 mentors, past and present. Auctioneer Mark Buell helped raise nearly $270,000 for Fund-A-Future alone.
