“Who are you?”

“What’s your story?” someone who wants to get to know you might ask

the usual polite questions, “What’s your name?” and “What do you do?” However, the question “Who are you?” goes deeper.

Priests and Levites were sent to ask

John the Baptist: “Who are you?” John’s life both intrigued and chal-lenged those around him. His first

answer is telling: “I am not the Messiah.” He’s not pretending to be who he’s not. Borrowing from the prophet Isaiah, John defines himself

as “the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the LORD’.” John’s life centers on the Lord.

In our life’s journey, God wants us to fully claim who we are. He came

that we might have life, abundant

life. John’s testimony is not about denying his reality as a person cre-

ated and loved by God. Instead,

John recognizes the unique mission

God has entrusted to him, and John

accepts his identity as one called to

point to the Messiah. What is our

identity?

volves knowing where we have

Parish Guideline: With good intention to welcome others to wor-

ship and pray with our Church, we ask the invited person, with

your free will, be registered in our Parish for at least three (3)

months in order to schedule for the Sacrament of Matrimony or

Baptism. Otherwise, a letter of permission is definitely required

from your Pastor.

Sacrament of Baptism of a Child: Second Saturday of the month

after 4:00 PM Mass. Arrangements are to be made at least one (1)

month in advance. Contact the office for the date of training.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Arrangements

are to be made with our Director Religious Education (DRE) for

the further assistance.

Sacrament of Matrimony (Marriage): Arrangements are to be

come from. In the realm of the Spirit,

knowing whose we are is essential. Who

or what claims my heart? What do I

know of my Creator? What is my rela-

tionship with God?

In another passage, Jesus asks his disci-

ples: “Who do you say that I am?”. Dur-ing the remaining days of Advent, ask

the Lord to reveal to you more fully who

God is and wants to be for you. Saint

Augustine believed that the more you

know of God, the more you know of

yourself. Like parent, like child. It

works the other way around too. It’s part of being made in the image and likeness

of God!

Lord, you called me into being out of

love. You made me in your image and

likeness. I am a marvel of your creation!

As you did for John the Baptist, reveal

to me the plan you have dreamed for my

life. Continue to reveal yourself to me

that my life may be a response to your

creative love. Each day, as I look for-

ward to a new manifestation of your

presence, may I further claim my filial

relationship to you. May those whom I

encounter see the resemblance between

us. Lord, come and be born in my heart

each day! I want to proclaim you

through my life. Amen. I am God’s pre-cious child.

Thánh Âu-gớt-ti-nô tin rằng càng hiểu Thiên Chúa nhiều, thì càng hiểu chính ÔBACE nhiều hơn. Giống như cha mẹ, giống như con cái. Nó cũng thích ứng ngược lại như vậy. Nó là phần của sự tạo dựng giống trong hình ảnh của Thiên Chúa!

Lạy Chúa, Chúa đã kêu gọi con trong tình yêu của Chúa. Chúa tạo dựng nên con trong hình ảnh của Chúa và giống Chúa. Con là tạo vật tuyệt vời của Chúa! Như Chúa đã làm cho Thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả vậy, xin mạc khải cho con kế hoạch của Chúa mà Chúa đã từng mơ ước ban cho cuộc sống của con. Xin tiếp tục mạc khải chính Chúa cho con rằng đời sống của con có thể là một sự đáp lại tình yêu tạo dựng của Chúa. Mỗi ngày, như con hướng về một dấu hiện mới trong sự hiện diện của Chúa, xin cho con được kêu nài trong tình liên đới với Chúa như là một đứa con của Chúa. Xin cho những người mà con tiếp xúc với họ thấy được sự tương quan đồng hành giữa Chúa và con. Lạy Chúa, xin hãy đến và sinh ra trong trái tim của con mỗi ngày! Con muốn xin kêu nài lên Chúa trong suốt cả cuộc đời con. Amen. Con là con yêu quý của Chúa.

December 17, 2017 – The Process of Giving

Joy, a wise woman once pointed out, is in the doing.

The sentiment is meant as a reminder that it’s not always just about the

destination; sometimes a journey itself is ripe with opportunities for

grace and happiness.

So it is, apparently, for volunteers who fashion creative doll clothing as

part of an annual contest conducted by the Old Newsboys Goodfellows

of Detroit. According to a recent story in The Detroit News, thousands

of the packages distributed by the organization this and every year con-

tain dolls, so they encourage members of the community to develop

creative and colorful costumes for the dolls to wear.

Winners of this year’s contest, the story reported, were recently on dis-

play in a downtown office building, giving people a chance to be in-

spired not only by the creativity of the contest participants, but also by

the charitable attitude they display in taking the time and love to put

together the outfits.

The Goodfellows executive director, interviewed by a reporter, said that

the dolls – and all the gifts of toys and clothing – are, as one might ex-

pect, much appreciated by the recipients.

“We still get letters from people who got packages (through the

years),” she told the reporter. Which clearly raises the question of who

accrues the largest blessings from the effort, those who receive the gifts,

or those who make it possible for the gifts to be given in the first place.

“The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed

me,” we hear in today’s first reading from the prophet Isaiah. “He has

sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to

proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners.” Christmas is just a week away. As the preparation process continues,

what tidings do we bring?

Calendar Alert: Christmas 2017

According to Canon Law, “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the

faithful are obliged to participate in the

Mass. This year the 4th Sunday of Ad-vent falls on December 24, Christmas falls on Monday, December 25.

Some people are beginning to ask: Can

I satisfy both obligations by attending

Mass on the evening of December 23

or 24 only?

The prevailing view of canon lawyers

is that each obligation must be ful-filled by attending a separate Mass:

“A person who assists at a Mass cele-brated anywhere in a Catholic rite ei-

ther on the feast itself or in the evening

of the preceding day satisfies the obli-

gation of participating in the

Mass” (#1248 no. 1)

The Christmas Tree: Legends, Traditions, History

TREE OF LIFE, LOVE, PEACE By Lino Lozzo

Many legends and old traditions concerning the Christmas tree date back to very ancient times, but historical documentation of its

origin as the tree we know and decorate today only appeared in recent centuries.

There is no doubt, however, that legends and traditions show the convergence of many customs, some born outside the Christian

culture and others strictly Christian. We will consider here some of the most important ones that were forerunners of the Christmas

tree. Since very ancient times even primitive people would take evergreen plants and flowers into their huts, seeing in them a magi-

cal or religious significance. The Greek and Romans decorated their dwellings with ivy. The Celts and Scandinavians preferred mis-

tletoe, but many other evergreen plants such as holly, butcher’s broom, laurel and branches of pine or fir were considered to have

magical or medicinal powers that would ward off illness. This belief was found especially among the inhabitants of the northern re-

gions with cold climates and long, dark winters; it was almost as if these plants revived thoughts of the coming spring while every-

thing around them lay dormant. Naturally enough, temples were built to the “goddess Flora.”

St. Boniface, eight-century bishop

An interesting tradition, part history, part legend and very popular in Germany, claims that the Christmas tree dates back to the

eighth century. This legend is based on a historical figure, St. Boniface, and even a historical event, the destruction of Odin’s oak. St.

Boniface (675-754) was the English Bishop Winfrid who went to Germany in the eighth century, to Hesse to be precise, to preach

the Christian faith as a missionary from the Church of Rome. After a period of apparently successful Gospel preaching, Boniface

went to Rome to confer with Pope Gregory II (715-731). After a long absence, he returned to Geismar, Germany, for Christmas 723,

and felt personally offended on discovering that the Germans had reverted to their former idolatry of pagan divinities and were pre-

paring to celebrate the winter solstice by sacrificing a young man under Odin’s sacred oak tree. Fired by holy anger, as was Moses

by the golden calf, Bishop Boniface took up an axe and dared to cut down the oak. This courageous, historically documented act

meant the triumph of Christianity in Germany over the pagan divinities.

All this is historically documented. The rest belongs to the legend which tells how, at the first blow of the axe, a strong gust of wind

instantly brought down the tree. The astounded Germans fearfully recognized the hand of God in this event and humbly asked Boni-

face how they should celebrate Christmas. The Bishop, the legend continues, pointed to a small fir tree that had miraculously re-

mained upright and intact beside the debris and broken branches of the fallen oak. Boniface was familiar with the popular custom of

taking an evergreen plant into the house in winter and asked everyone to take home a fir tree. This tree signifies peace, and as an

evergreen it also symbolizes immortality; with its top pointing upwards, it additionally indicates heaven, the dwelling place of God.

Another legend is constituted by a famous hawthorn called the “Holy Thorn” that was found at Glastonbury Abbey in England and

flowers at Christmas time. It was venerated as a “sacred relic” because a legend claims that it derived from a sprig that came from

Jesus’ crown of thorns. The legendary hawthorn survived for many centuries and was honored as a sacred relic. This flowering bush

made a contribution of its own to the idea of a tree associated with the Christmas feast day.

Giáo Lý Hội Thánh Công Giáo, số 2181, quy định: “Thánh lễ Chúa nhật đặt nền tảng và xác định toàn bộ cuộc sống người tín hữu. Do đó, mọi tín hữu phải tham dự thánh lễ vào ngày buộc, trừ khi có một lý do quan trọng (như bệnh hoạn, chăm sóc trẻ sơ sinh) hay được cha sở miễn chuẩn (x. Điều 1245). Ai cố tình vi phạm sẽ mắc tội trọng”. Theo điều 1247 của Bộ Giáo luật, các tín hữu buộc phải tham dự Thánh Lễ ngày Chúa nhật và các ngày Lễ Buộc khác. Năm nay 2017, ngày Chúa Nhật thứ 4 Mùa Vọng nhằm vào ngày 24 tháng 12. Ngày Chúa Giáng Sinh nhằm vào ngày Thứ Hai, ngày 25 tháng 12. Câu hỏi được đặt ra là : Tôi có thể chỉ tham dự Thánh Lễ chiều ngày 23 và 24 mà thôi là đủ hội hai điều kiện của hai ngày Chúa Nhật ngày 24 và ngày lễ buộc nhằm ngày Thứ Hai ngày 25 không?

Giáo luật, điều 1248, khoản 1, quy định: “Ai tham dự Thánh lễ, cử hành theo lễ nghi Công Giáo bất cứ ở đâu, vào chính ngày lễ hay vào chiều ngày trước lễ, thì người ấy đã chu toàn việc buộc dự lễ”.

Gaudete – Rejoice!

Today we celebrate Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete meaning rejoice in Latin. The Church marks this Sunday as an

occasion to focus on the joy, instead of the anxiety, in our wait for Jesus’ coming. Many of us are in panic mode at this time as we try to do all the things we need to do by Christmas. But today is a day of rejoicing. In

the reading from Isaiah, God’s chosen people had just returned from exile. They are truly feeling “a year of favor…a day of vindication” (Isaiah 61:2). In the responsorial psalm we hear the words of Mary after she was visited by the angel Gabriel. She had been anxious when the angel first told her the news and no doubt would

Church personnel and/or to speak to the Victim Assistance Coordinator contact: (866) 343-8055. A caller will

be requested to provide his or her name and telephone number. All calls regarding complaints of sexual

abuse will be returned in a timely manner. This toll-free number has been established as part of an effort by

the Detroit archdiocese to protect children, young people and other vulnerable people in our schools, par-

ishes and ministries. This line is for reporting suspected sexual misconduct or child abuse within archdioce-

san institutions and ministries only. Persons with such complaints are also encouraged to directly contact law

enforcement authorities.
