PsycBooks – we have now added PsycBOOKS to our collection of resources from the APA. The resource is listed in the Databases A-Z on the library website, as well as under several Your Subject listings. Content from PsycBOOKS will also be “discovered” via Library Search. PsycBooks includes access to new APA-published books as and when they are released. The APA Handbooks in Psychology series is now included (for the full series list and information about other content see the link below) http://www.apa.org/pubs/databases/psycbooks/july-2014-changes.aspx Fingermark Visualisation Manual This is an interactive eBook produced by the Home Office and primarily of practical use to Forensic Science students. The eBook can be found using Library Search.
New e-book
The library has just purchased a great new e-book:
The Encyclopaedia of Health Communication by Teresa Thompson. It is accessible via the Library
Search http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/library/ in the usual way. Have a look and see what you think.
“From the dynamics of interpersonal communication between health professionals and clients to
global command-and-control during public health emergencies that cross international borders, the
field of health communication bridges many disciplines and involves efforts from the micro to the
macro. It involves navigating personal, cultural, and political complexities and an ability to distill com-
plex technical science into quickly and easily understood terms for ready distribution by the mass
Media or to an individual patient or to the parent of an ailing child”.
HSC Online Work book
We have developed an online library workbook for students so that they can learn how to find and use library resources and also find and use evidence for their course. The library online workbook is divided into 7 units. Level 1 students should complete units 1-5. Level 2 students should complete unit 6. Unit 7 covers academic skills which will be useful for all students: http://www.uwe.ac.uk/library/resources/has/has-low/ You can link to this in BlackBoard and encourage your students to complete the workbook to help them find information for their assignments.
New to the faculty? We are always happy to talk to new staff and run through our services with you, and find out how we can best support you and your students.
Contact Fay Dowding at:
Digitisation - New requests
All new requests need to be submitted on the following form: http://www.uwe.ac.uk/library/cms/usingthelibrary/teachingstaff/putreadingsonline/request-form.htm Please note material cannot be scanned if an electronic version of the book or journal has been published commercially. This is to guarantee the materials are ready for September. We are happy to try to accommodate your requests - please fill in when you need the material for and we will do our best to comply.
Alexandra Warehouse Library @ UWE Gloucester - Having problems returning books? Remember that there is an external book drop situated outside by the bike rack at the front of the building. This book drop bin is open 24/7 and emptied several times a day by library staff.
Alternative Formats Service If you have any students that you think would benefit from the Alternative Formats Service it would be really helpful if you could make them aware of this. There is more information at: http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/library/usingthelibrary/disabledusers/alternativeformats.aspx Did you know it can take one person 3-4 weeks full time to reformat one book so the more
notice we have the more likely the student would get the materials on time. So liaising with the
Alternative formats team, [email protected] to provide essential reading lists and in the
case of a whole book, selecting specific chapters would really help us deliver a better service.
New Books Display
Check out our latest nursing titles on our new books
display located opposite the self issue machine in
the library.
Staffing Changes This term we welcomed Clare McNaught to the team. Our new Library Information Assistant works 8 hours per week from 4pm - 6pm Monday to Thursday.
Frenchay Christmas and New Year opening The library at Frenchay was open for the whole of the Christmas and New Year period for the first time. 137 people came into the library on Christmas Day and 258 on New Year’s Day!
IT improvements at Frenchay
The thin client PCs on the level 4 zigzag shaped desks have all been replaced by new mini PCs. These PCs have the PC built into a 23” screen and are tidier with less wiring. More library catalogue terminals have been added to level 3 outside room 3D42 and near the level 3 printing room. More PCs have also been added in the new desk area on level 5. The Frenchay Laptop lockers are now back online after a slight glitch before Christmas. A survey will be generated and emailed to students upon returning their laptop.
Box of Broadcasts
Glenside Library are currently running lunchtime workshops
for staff on Box of Broadcasts. BoB (Box of Broadcasts)
National allows staff and students to record and catch-up
on missed programmes on and off-campus, schedule recordings in advance, edit
programmes into clips, create playlists, embed clips into VLEs, share what they are
watching with others, search a growing archive of material, plus more.
Anatomical models
The Glenside Library has made some recent purchases of anatomical models to add
to our extensive existing resource:
4 abdominal palpation models
1 placental circulation model
2 pelvic floor models
1 foetal circulation model (on order to arrive end of Feb 2015)
If you would like more information on our anatomical models collection, please
contact [email protected] or visit the Library and we will be pleased to give you
a tour.
Preparation for Placement Library Sessions We currently do half an hour sessions for Adult Nursing students before they go on placement. It highlights the library services students can access from UWE but also what is available in acute and community settings such as NHS Evidence and NHS libraries. If you would like a session for your programme please contact your Subject Support Librarian to arrange.
NICE Evidence has changed! Did you know the interface for NICE evidence has changed? To see it and for more information click on https://www.evidence.nhs.uk/ and follow the links to the new site. We are promoting this service to students and give all students on an NHS commissioned course an NHS OpenATHENS username and password to access extra content such as the BNF app.
