What kind of literature is out there?
OHSU
• Wilderness and Env Medicine: Injuries in Commercial Whitewater Rafting on the New and Gauley Rivers of West Virginia (2013)
– 55% of injuries occurred in raft, 40% in the river
– 50% lacerations, 20% sprains, 20% dislocations
– Overall injury rate of 20/100,000 guests, 0.68 fatalities/100,000
OHSU
• Clinical J Sports med: Injuries in commercial whitewater rafting (1999)
– Similar injury rates
– Similar types of injuries, most commonly to the face/lower extremities
– 1/3 lacerations, 1/4 sprains, 15% fx, 8% dislocations
OHSU
• J Sports Med: Injuries in whitewater Kayaking (2001) – Number of days spent kayaking only independent
predictor of injuries
– Striking an object most common mechanism of injury (44%)
– 50% abrasion/contusion, 25% tendonitis, 17% dislocation
– Half sought medical care
– 96% reported good/complete recovery

Limitations
• Limited studies
• Retrospective nature
• Sampling bias
• Hard to get data from kayakers
• Many injuries not mentionedOHSU
What is the risk?
OHSU
How does this compare to other “extreme” sports?
• Ski: 2.5/1000 skier days
• Base Jump: 3/1000 jumps require hospitalization
• Rock climbing and Mountaineering: 5/1000 days
• Mountain biking: 4/1000 days
• Commercial rafting: 0.25/1000 rafter days
