Congratulations to our December Yard of

the Month winners Leona and Herb Walkerof 4635 Whitehorn Drive NE

We moved to Whitehorn in 1978. Since thenwe have gradually changed our yard,

putting in a retaining wall at the back, takingout the fenced dog run the previous ownershad, bringing in top soil for a vegetablegarden, moving trees and plants around, andinstalling brick sidewalks, etc.

We collect rain water and have a compostbin. Many different birds visit our yard andthe bird bath. In summer we enjoy sittingout in our shady back yard on the cool

    grass.

We commend the Whitehorn CommunityAssociation for encouraging residents tokeep their properties beautiful and neat.

Active transportation is a concept fitfor todays fast paced society. In a worldwhere we are strapped for time activetransportation has two goals in mind:physical activity and getting to where youneed to be.

Most people may be strapped for time withfamily, work and other commitments and put physical activity on the backburner;but with active transportation theres timefor both. Active transportation meansincorporating physical activity intoyour travel plans in hopes of reachingthe recommended daily physical activityrequirements. Active transportation canentail walking, cycling, in-line skating, running or any other form of activity. Itis also possible to incorporate the useof public transportation for longerdistances.

For those who arent convinced in giving

active transportation a shot, have a look atsome of the benefits that may await you: Increase in daily physical activity Money saved on gas and parking Reduced environmental impact Helping reduce traffic congestion Increased quality of life Reduced stress

Make sure that when you are beginning touse active transportation you develop aplan. It is important to know the details, but also allow for some flexibility andchanges to the plan. For example, if you

choose to bike to work, clothing will be animportant question as weather will be afactor to consider. Consider what modesof transportation are possible and whatwould suit you best. Perhaps a dry run ona weekend is a good idea.

Consider as well how you should dressand if you need a change of clothes. Ask ifyou need to make alternate arrangementsbecause of the weather or any otherreason.

If choosing a mode of transportation thatis in the moderate or vigorous categoryconsider if showering facilities are avail-able.

When planning to use active transporta-tion, make it feasible and efficient. If youcan see that the benefits out weigh thecosts (which they should if you are choos-ing the correct method), then you will be

much more likely to continue with yournew routine. This could mean getting afriend to do it with you, or simply waitingfor a better time for you.

You may feel as though winter is a badtime to start biking to work even thoughyou only live 4 km away. This could be agreat time to start a bus/walking routinefor the winter or simply plan and get readyso that you can start first thing in thespring. With the right plan you will bemotivated and prepared for the excitingworld of active transportation.

Elite Power Skating Testimonial...As a player, you may not realize you are doing anything wrong, or you justthink you are doing everything right. However, it wasnt until Rex Tucker, one ofthe best power skating instructors out there, tweaked my skating skills that I learned about my potential to improve. I have to say I improved dramatically. Ilearned a lot of little things to get a step up on an opponent. Even though I was a good skater to begin with, I feel I have reached another level of performance now... There is no such thing as a perfect skater, but there are great skaters. I

now feel that a players skating skills will always have room for improvement... no matter what level of play. I plan to

Lately, I have found myself in-trigued about a book thats be-coming popular all over the world

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The book talks about something

Rhonda realized after reading anovel her daughter gave her in2004 when it seemed like herwhole life was falling apart. It toldher about a secret the greatest

people in history understood andlived by. She was so in awe ofthe secret, she wanted to tell eve-rybody what she thinks is nowalmost forgotten.

After all the interesting things Iheard about Rhondas book, I feltlike racing to the nearest book-

store so I could dive for it if I sawit before other people could theirhands on it. And so, one fine day,I hurried into a bookstore andasked if the store had the bookin stock. The man in charge ofthe store replied quickly, as ifseveral people asked him thesame question regularly. Yes,

Realizing the Secretthey just came in today. Helooked at a stack of copies ofThe Secret in the back of theshop, knowing they would all besold fast. He also had a stack ofThe Secret DVDs available. He looked as if he knew all theDVDs would be gone soon, too.

I purchased one of each. Thatnight I watched the movie andlater read the book.

The movie has an uplifting, spir-itual and almost religious thememusic in it. The soundtrack andthe imagery in the film are beau-tiful. A number of people are in-troduced to the viewer. Theyshare one thing in common. They all appear happy, content, and enlightened. Each personexplains how the Law of Attrac-

tion impacts life. The Law of At-traction, they said, says a per-sons emotions and thoughtsmanifest reality.

If you are negative, you attractbad things. If you are positive, you attract good things to you.The speakers explained, every-

things most basic componentis energy. Therefore, positiveenergy attracts good, whilenegative energy attracts bad.

The Law of Attraction is true. How many times have we startedthinking of a certain person weknow, only to run into that per-son or hear from that person inthe next few days? How manytimes have we looked at a sce-nario and thought, this probably

is not going to work, or, thereare too many things that can gowrong with this, and how oftendid things go downhill once we

    started thinking like this?

The film and the book are eyeopeners. They talk about theimportance of faith in an infinite

power and the power of positivethoughts and emotions. Theconcepts discussed are, in real-ity, the teachings of all.
