Dear Parents,

Last Friday all of our staff were involved in a day which focussed on

“Restorative Practices: Nurturing Human Dignity”. At the core of our

Christian story is the message that we are all loved by God. Through

exploring the stories of Creation in the Book of Genesis, the first book of

the Bible, we were reminded that God gave us life and that in life, we

are free to choose. Having freedom though, involves having rights and

responsibilities.

Developing relationships is pivotal to all humans: being connected and

knowing that we are loved gives us life. We as educators have an

incredibly ‘sacred role’, nurturing the growth of our young people. We,

together with you as parents, ‘form young hearts and minds’, enabling

them to know that each of them is loved and valued. When children, or

adults, don’t have a sense of being valued, this can lead to making

choices which can be damaging to both themselves and others.

There are times in relationships when conflict occurs or bridges are

broken. Restorative Practices, through the asking of questions and

listening to one another, give children skills to resolve conflict or

brokenness. Learning to acknowledge their responsibilities and their

rights and that of others is key to this. Learning to respect themselves,

others and their environment becomes a basic building block for life.

In Term 3 at our next staff day we will continue to develop our

understanding of working with our young people to bring about a sense

of worthiness and wholeness as they navigate the waters of life.

On Saturday 25th June (10 days’ time) all families are invited to a film

afternoon at the Odeon Theatre Semaphore. “Finding Dory” will be

the focus of the day! Following this all are invited to gather in the Hall

across the road for pizzas and chicken…an easy Saturday evening meal!

A flyer is attached to today’s newsletter and tickets for the film (and

meal) are available from our Office. Please order by next Wednesday so

that catering can be organised and numbers provided to the theatre.

Thank you to the Parents and Friends for organising this.

Tickets for “The Red Carpet” performance, our whole school concert

on August 5th are also available for purchase from the Office.

Grandparents, aunties and uncles and neighbours will all delight in the

singing and dancing of all 18 classes as they make their way through many different musicals. Be sure to invite

them all to this showcase of talent!

Our deepest sympathy to the following families who have lost loved ones this week:

The family of Rina Lieu (6/7R) on the death of her grandfather, Mr Chuyen Tran,

who passed away on the 8th June - and -

The family of Carlos Camacho (6/7CS) on th death of his grandfather,

Mr Stelios Mountzouris, who passed away on the 12th June.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lieu and Camacho families at this sad time.

May their loved ones be at peace with God.

Religious Dimension

St. Anthony of Padua– Feast Day 13th June

St. Anthony is a popular Saint, particularly within our Italian community, as much of Anthony’s preaching and teaching occurred throughout Italy. Anthony was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195. When he joined the Franciscan Order, he changed his name to Anthony. Anthony was an intellectual and he dedicated much time to the study of theology and Latin. He also taught at the universities of Montpellier and Toulouse in southern France. Anthony carried with him a book of psalms and written notes that he used for teaching. This book however was stolen, so Anthony

prayed and his book was returned. Modern images of Anthony hence depict him with a book and the Infant Child Jesus, and he is commonly referred to as the “finder of lost articles”. For his intellectual contributions Anthony was declared a Doctor of the Church. Michael Larner– APRIM

Federal Government Elections: Saturday 2nd July

As we move towards our Federal Government elections you may like to consider the following points when

deciding who to vote for on July 2nd. Listen to be aware of what each of the parties are offering. This will affect

your children in the future!

1. If government funding for Catholic schools fails to keep pace with school costs, that could lead to even

larger fee increases, affect school quality or lead to school closures.

2. More than 70 new Catholic schools are planned across Australia in the next five years to meet growing

demand for school places. Without additional capital funding, these schools may not be built. Government

funding is also needed to maintain and upgrade existing Catholic schools. South Australia currently

receives only $5.5m per annum for capital development.

3. The Federal Government deflects paying the South Australian Year 7 students at the secondary per capita

recurrent grant rate, stating it is a State Government issue - while requiring them to study the same

curriculum and sit the same NAPLAN tests as other states. South Australia is the only state where

Year 7 students are funded at a primary per capita recurrent grant level.

A celebration to mark the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of St Joseph in Penola.

A gold coin donation will support our parishioner Vy Nguyen attend the World Youth Day in Poland in July.

In Mathematics this term we have been learning about

length, area and perimeter.

We learnt to estimate and accurately measure

different units of length. There were not enough

metre rulers for everyone to use so Mrs Twigden

asked us to make our own. This was a challenging task

for us because we had to concentrate on marking out

every centimetre and make sure that it was evenly

spaced.

From this activity, we discovered how many

centimetres and millimetres there are in one metre.

Once our metre rulers were completed, we found items

around the classroom that were less than, about and

more than one metre.

This was so much fun!

SACPSSA Athletics Day

Last Tuesday saw the might of the Whitefriars Athletics Team display their skills in the annual SACPSSA

Athletics Carnival. Whitefriars are in the very competitive and tough Division 2. In all, 35 students represented

the school in a range of track and field events at the SA Athletics Stadium. All students who represented

Whitefriars on the day did the school proud and tried their very best.

We had students come home with a range of ribbons for their efforts but the best aspect for me was the continued

encouragement they offered each other and offered students from other schools throughout the day. Our Senior

Boys Team dominated their age group and won four events which allowed them to win the coveted Senior Boys

Age Champions pennant.

A massive thank you to the parents who assisted with events throughout the day, especially Kylie Noblet and

Christine Dunbar. Your continued help was very much appreciated by the students and myself.
