The Whitechapel Mission has servedhomeless and hungry Londonerssince the 1870s. Last year, TheWhitechapel Mission provided morethan 103,000 hot meals, 750 nights ofshelter during the coldest weather, offered 23,800 showers and 3,189onsite medical, and dental exams.

Each meal and every service is aninvitation to advice, councelling andcommunity programmes that helpguests make progress.

Our work is privately funded by thegenerous donations and in-kind giftsof caring individuals, and supportedby the efforts of thousands ofvolunteers.

As I look back on 2018, I am filledwith joy at the lives changed throughyour support of The WhitechapelMission!

But it’s about more than meals. Byencouraging each person to address the issues

which caused their homelessness, we help them togain the skills and confidence to make lasting

changes in their lives - We believe everyone deservesa chance, regardless of their background, race orreligion - We are open every day of the year and

expect to see as many as 300 homeless andvulnerable men and women each day.

And we do this without publicfunding.

include sufficient Clothing ChallengeTeams to sort the donated garments thatwe receive, Gift sorting for the food andtoiletry items and Lifeskills volunteers tosupport Sonia in the Lifeskills Room. Wealso have a team of volunteers workingwith our Ladies Group on a Fridayafternoon.

New volunteer groups are often unsureabout what to expect from theirChallenge and it is difficult to explain thework that goes on here over thetelephone. I therefore show arepresentative from each team aroundthe Mission prior to their event. Thisensures that any concerns can beaddressed before the day. Visitors areoften surprised by the upbeatatmosphere in the Kitchen and this cements the realisation that it will be funas well as worthwhile.

Having worked in the NewspaperAdvertising Industry for over 20 years, Ifelt that I was in need of a change. 11years ago, I started at the WhitechapelMission.

As the Mission Administrator, my role isvaried, often interesting and sometimeschallenging.

One moment I can be speaking with aservice user, the next a representativefrom a large international firm, interestedin supporting the work of the Mission. Ideal with Corporate Social Responsibilityrepresentatives, volunteers, donors andclients.

Working with such a diverse group ofpeople means that no 2 days are thesame.

Every day, 365 times a year, we musthave a team in place who will arrive at5.45am, ready to prepare, cook andserve Breakfast to all who come throughour doors.

This Team activity is known as theBreakfast Challenge.

The Day Centre staff not only run thekitchen with great efficiency but also helpto make the session enjoyable forvolunteers and Clients alike. It is oftenbooked up months in advance and mostof the groups that attend are eager toreturn with colleagues and/ or friends onanother occasion.

It is my job to ensure that there is a teamhere on site, every day of the year. Thevolunteer diary is a jigsaw that must also

Mission does is spread to as wide an au-dience as possible and to this end, Ischedule Tony’s speaking engagementsto Clubs, Companies and Groups. I alsoschedule his many meetings in his diary.The Whitechapel Mission could not oper-ate without the volunteers who give sofreely of their time and the donors who sogenerously contribute to the costs of run-ning the centre. The Virgin London 10KRun is one of the ways that we raiseextra funds and I organise the team ofaround 100 runners for this event eachyear.

Throughout the time that I have workedat the Mission, I have enjoyed building arapport with our corporate contacts, sup-porters, volunteers and clients. I remainoften surprised by the generosity of all ofthe people who make this work possible.

The Mission receives numerousenquiries each day and my colleagueCathy and I answer these calls, e-mailsand letters in a timely manner.

All donations, both Monetary and Gifts inkind are recorded, processed and a letteror E-mail of thanks is sent. We alsorecord Gift Aid mandates and ensure thatwe have the relevant information toenable the Mission to claim this valuable addition to each donation.

I arrange the collection and delivery ofthe larger Gifts in Kind Donations,ensuring that they are met on arrival andwe have sufficient storage space toaccommodate them.

When a person first comes in to TheWhitechapel Mission they are often at avery low point, with very little self-esteemand they cannot see a way out of theirparticular situation and their thinkingoften follows a pattern like this:

As a Methodist who has spent the last 35years working in Prisons and Probation, Iwas aware of the work of the WhitechapelMission and felt very privileged when I wasasked to consider becoming a Trustee.Nevertheless, visiting the Mission for thefirst time was a special and humblingexperience. Sue was marshalling anenthusiastic bunch of volunteers; breakfastwas being served with good humour;pastoral support and practical help were onoffer; and there was real sense of purposeand care for everyone.

It’s that unconditional, non-judgmental carefor individuals which will stay with me fromthat visit – and which characterises thewhole ethos of the Mission.

Paraphrasing Rev William Temple – ‘no-oneis homeless and nothing else’ and it wasclear to me that the Mission works becauseit has this truth at its heart. It doesn’t workwith ‘the homeless and destitute’ it workswith Pete, Billy, Nick, Wendy and thousandsof other unique individuals who findfellowship, support, practical help and awarm welcome within its walls. Because ittakes no statutory funding the Mission isfree to offer its services ‘to all in need’ withno strings attached. And it does this everyday – helping people from all walks of lifeand from all parts of the world – who findthemselves in difficulty on the streets ofLondon.

From a relatively small space the Missionhas a huge outreach. The numbers – over3000 volunteers, working with almost 5000men and women, serving 110,000 break-fasts and providing 25,000 showers arereally impressive. But it’s the dailydifference that it makes to the lives of eachperson who comes through its doors whichis truly inspiring. And it does make adifference – just ask those who come to visit

A trustees thoughtswhat it means and you can’t fail to bemoved.

It is a real everyday example of love inaction – caring for ‘all in need’ and I’mpleased to be able to play a small part in itsamazing work.

Wemake a promise to all

of our financial supportersthat all the money given to us

will only ever be spent to supportour homeless guests and willnever be used to advertise or

fundraise for moremoney.

The Trustees understand the importance and responsibility that comes with running acharity and accountability it brings.

That is why every single pound that the Whitechapel Mission receives is fully allocated to itsdesignated project. Not a single penny is removed for other purposes. No donation will beused for:

Administration, Fundraising, Maintenance or TV adverts

You have never seen the Whitechapel Mission advertising on TV, and you never will. Yourdonations are only ever used for direct expense to assist those in need and will never bespent on expensive TV adverts.

For example: If you give £10 with the intention of it helping towards feeding the homeless, the Trusteeswill ensure that every penny of that £10 is used to feed the homeless.

Since the charity's inception in 1876, not a single penny has ever been deducted forfundraising or administration costs. In fact, over the years many hundreds of thousands ofpounds of the administration fund has been allocated to our charitable cause. Even taxreclaimed from the UK government's Gift Aid scheme is spent on direct expenditure. Thisallows taxpayers to increase the value of their donation by 25% and know it is also beingspent delivering services to the homeless.

All the charity's administrative and fundraising costs are covered by:

The task of providing for the immediateneeds and then working to turn around thelives of those who have been largelyrejected by society has been carried out atThe Whitechapel Mission for the last 142years and continues today. But the work ofpicking up the pieces of shattered livescomes with a large price tag – at TheWhitechapel Mission £2,055 is neededevery day of the year for the work to beable to continue. As the only indepen-dently-funded homeless charity in London,raising this money is a huge task. But it isvital.

It is vital because we cannot let down thosewho turn to us for help everyday because they have beenlet down by others so manytimes. So we have given thema promise that tomorrowmorning at 6.00am our doorswill be open and we will behere with a warm welcome, theopportunity for a wash andbrush-up and/or the use oftoilet facilities and as manycups of tea or coffee as theywant. Later on the showerswill open, a cooked breakfast will beavailable and fresh clothing will beavailable for those who need it.

But for that promise to be fulfilled for asmany tomorrows as it takes weneed you, our caring supporters,to help provide the financialsupport that will enable us tocontinue to open our doors eachand every day of the year forthose who need us sodesperately.

Donate gifts in kind

The Whitechapel Mission acceptsdonations of various foodstuffs, toiletriesand clothing. The web-site is updated on aregular basis to show which items weparticularly need at that time.

Donations may be dropped off at TheWhitechapel Mission from 4am to 3pmweekdays and 6am to noon on weekends.

There are, however, some items we cannotuse, mainly retro or vintage garments,jewellery and accessories, CDs, videos andDVDs, homeware, china, ornaments,pictures, furniture, duvets and pillows.

Psalm 23 , You’ll never walk Alone, sharingour stories of good times spent with Billy andremembering “auld acquaintances” werewoven together with his Scottish heritage,laughter, silence, tears and reflectivemoments; all to celebrate the honest andreal life that Billy had lived, giving thanks toGod for all his blessings.

Prayers of thanksgiving and commendationwere shared. Billy’s ashes were blessed andcommissioned on their way to be scatteredin the sea at Ramsgate by staff and friends.

After the service there was a chance formore conversation, shared stories andgetting to know those who had shared theirlives with Billy. We also were treated to asuperb buffet meal, prepared and served byour gifted kitchen and operations team.Billy was such a special person in the life ofWhitechapel Mission. He was welcomed,encouraged, challenged, he changed andflourished. He welcomed, encouraged,helped, shared and loved. He is greatlymissed – but will always be in our heartsand minds and in our stories.

Friends, staff, supporters and memberscame together at a service of thanksgivingand celebration for the life of Billy McDowallon Tuesday 18th September at noon.As everyone stood to pay tribute, Billy’sashes were brought into the church by twomembers of staff, to the sound of the pipesand drums.

We were able to hear and see some ofBilly’s own reflections on his life, what haddrawn hi to Whitechapel Mission and whatwork he did.

Tony Miller, Whitechapel Mission Director,spoke movingly of his own personalexperience of working with Billy; trying tohelp Billy; eventually being part of the workthat helped Billy’s life to be transformed; andthen supporting Billy as he became anessential and valued part of the WhitechapelMission Team. Tony spoke with much pridein having had the chance to share his lifewith Billy, and really proud of the way inwhich Billy was a much loved (especially bythe volunteers). Tony shared that he wouldhave loved Billy to have been present to seejust how many people had come to showtheir support.

John Hayes, Whitechapel Mission’sMinister, shared how Billy’s life had beentransformed by love, the love that had beenthe inspiration for the Mission, and the lovethat was still being shared for everyone,Gods love as lived out by following the wayof Jesus. Billy continued the tradition, andhis honesty and passion showed in the lovethat reached out to so many people. Johnalso shared his own pride in the way inwhich the Whitechapel Mission family hadsupported Billy during his illness and death.They had looked after him in such a lovingway and enabled him to reconcile with someof his family. They had made his life special,sharing in caring, listening andremembering.

Hearing all the talk once again about howthe report from this government on just howit intends to end the scourge of roughsleeping (just how many reports can yourecall having been written by governmentsof all persuasions?) brought to mind a storyI came across many years ago about acrocodile names Brutus and a tree surgeonin Darwin, Australia called Freddy.

Northern Australia has an estimatedpopulation of 100,000 salt-water crocodilesand one of them became irritated by thenoise of Freddy’s chainsaw as he wasclearing a fallen tree after arecent tropical cyclone. Thenoise of Freddy’s chainsaw goton Brutus’ nerves so much that ittook it off him and chewed it tobits.

The chainsaw, which was stillgoing when Brutus wascrunching into it, was left in morepieces than it was originallymade from and is now part ofthat great scrapheap in the sky.The crocodile lost a few teeth in theprocess, but seemed pretty pleased withhimself as he slid back into the swamp toresume his afternoon of lazing around inwhat was now peace and quiet. Freddywas shaken (and presumably stirred aswell) but otherwise unharmed. For Brutus itwas job done.

Freddy had found out what Captain Hookcould have told him, namely that crocodilesget wound up by repetitive noise. The thingwith crocodiles is that they don’t muckabout and you get their goat at your peril.In a way I think that it would be a good ideaif homeless charities like The WhitechapelMission, and all of us who support the workthey do, took a leaf out of Brutus’ book. Weseem to have this constant irritating

background noise going on all the timeabout the latest new initiative to come outof government and the outstandingresults it is going to achieve, but after allthe noise has died down, has anythingactually changed?

Of the 100,000 or so salt water crocodilesin Northern Australia, it only took one todecide something needed to be done andto do it for the situation to change. If allof us who care about the plight of thehomeless could, like Brutus, decide to actto press for a change, then maybesomething would happen. Approachingour MP and telling them to stopproducing any further reports onhomelessness and rough sleeping untilthe existing reports have been actionedwould be a start.

Our aim is to serve the homeless andmarginalised men and women who havebecome caught in the cycle of poverty,hopelessness and dependencies of manykinds, and our goal is to see their livestransformed to hope, joy and lastingproductivity. Over the past twelve monthsyour help and support has enabled us toreach out and made a difference to thosewho have nowhere else to turn. Togetherwe are The Whitechapel Mission andtogether, with your continued help andsupport, we will keep going towards ourgoal.

In this Annual Review 2018 we have againtried to give you an insight into the workthat goes on here at The WhitechapelMission each and every day and hopefullyyou will have gained the sense of theurgency and the importance of what we dofor those for whom The WhitechapelMission and our promise is all they have tohold on to.
