DOG FOULING A minority of dog owners think it is OK to let their dogs foul the footways and public spaces not clear up after them! Unfortunately it is not just the High Street, Colsterworth but also public footpaths where children walk to school and also surprisingly the play areas. What sort of people are these? “Name and Shame” and hit them with a £500 fine. Help catch these people and make an example of them. Offenders can be reported to SKDC Environmental Services on 01476 406080 who will take appropriate action.

GRIT BINS - REMINDERLincolnshire County Council grit bins are located at strategic junctions for use in icy conditions. The grit is there to be used on public highways and footways it is NOT for private use on householder driveways. Rock salt and grit is NOT expensive and can be purchased from any reputable builders' merchants, hardware store and some supermarkets. There is no need to steal from the grit bins!

ALLOTMENTSGrow your own vegetables in 2016. The parish council has allotments at Woolsthorpe Road and Stamford Road ….. £15 per year. It is very rewarding when you see your own fruit and vegetables growing – taste the difference! Contact the Parish Clerk on 01476 861888 and see if there is one available or place your name on the waiting list. FAULTY STREET LIGHTSIf you notice a street light that is not operating correctly please note the number on the post, the location and report it directly to SKDC Customer Services 01476 406080 or to the Parish Clerk

2016 The Jesus Story CONTINUES!The exciting biblical story of Jesus Christ has been retold in 18 songs with narration, in a new musical entitled The Jesus Story. The musical was written by Richard Rice-Oxley, now a retired priest living in Swinstead. The first performances, given by a local choir and musicians in Swayfield and Corby Glen, were warmly received by packed audiences.

It was very sad to hear that local character Satpal Deooray had recently died. He originally came

from East Africa where his family owned saw mills near Mt Kilimanjaro, he was a highly skilled ‘saw doctor’. His Sikh funeral was held at Grantham

Crematorium on Friday 21st of January, and was attended by many local friends and many relatives,

one came from as far away as Canada.

KURLINGThe New Year started off really well. On our first day back after the Christmas break, we had three delightful little visitors. These were the Grandchildren of two of our members and as well as being perfectly behaved (Bill please note) they picked the game up very well.

The following week was SHOWTIME! Our very own group, the No Notes, Bill, Mo, John, Julia, Janet and Stuart entertained us. Their rendition of Nelly the Elephant was brilliant, with John playing the part of Nellie also made his costume. Then there was a bit of whispering and shuffling behind the curtains and low and behold we had a surprise guest. It was ELVIS! Well ok it was really Bill, but his impersonation was outstanding. He had all the movements from the hips to the pelvis. The rest of the gang were the backing group and were fantastic. So thank you for brightening up a dreary Monday. The entertainment was followed by mulled wine and Dave's scummy sausage rolls and yes many of us have gone on a diet!

LUNCHEON CLUBThe Christmas Lunch at Belton Park Golf Club was a huge a success, with everyone enjoying good food and good company. Many thanks to all those who gave a raffle prize and to Barry and Mick for organising it .Over a hundred pounds was raised for FOCUS funds. But then, no one says no to Barry! The date of our next lunch has yet to be decided so watch this space. If you want to do something different in 2016 join us for lunch. We go to various venues and are a friendly crowd. Ring June on 861400 for more information.

"On behalf of the FOCUS Carollers I would like to thank everyone

who gave so generously to our collection this year. We are able to

send £410 to the Air Ambulance Charity. I would particularly like to

mention the children that came out to listen to us this year, they stood

in their pyjamas on a breezy chilly evening and it really warmed our

hearts to sing to them. Our thanks also go to Madeleine and Dave at

the White Lion for their hospitality on Friday evening and the Sports

and Social Club for their hospitality on Monday evening. Last but not

least thanks to everyone who braved the elements to come along and

sing. We had people join us who are not FOCUS members but just

wanted sing and of course we had the FOCUS Singers this year so all

in all we had about 24 voices, how great is that! We are already

talking about next year so watch this space."

Sincere thanks to all

WOMEN'S INSTITUTEA new year and another new member. Using the try before you buy method, our visitor at the December meeting liked what she saw and heard and returned with her 2016 subscription. Most of our members had remembered to bring theirs as well so the Treasurer was suffering from writer's cramp by the end of the meeting. With our President, Janet, down with the dreaded "lurgy", Helen Scorror stepped into the breach and whizzed us through the business the most important part being the voting for the preferred resolution to be proposed at the National Annual Meeting in June. The results showed that we all had different concerns and priorities with votes spread across the eight alternatives. We heard that our contribution to the Boston Women's Refuge was greatly appreciated and that a spokeswoman is to attend the Spring Council Meeting at Spalding to publicly thank the Institutes who have contributed. We had received samples of

beauty products from a leading manufacturer and they were sampled there and then. We should all have skin as soft as the proverbial baby's bottom in due course hopefully. Two of us are to visit the Peterborough mosque, last year's visit was so popular that it is to be repeated for the unlucky ones who missed out. We discussed the forthcoming years programme with our Speaker Secretary, Gillian, and we are looking forward to an interesting year with some very entertaining speakers. (she has done a grand job). Yours truly gave a report on the Kesteven Group meeting which I had attended to discuss the annual meeting in October. So eager was Ito attend I went a week early (there's no hope I fear for me). It's our turn to thank the guest speaker and also to provide the floral arrangement for the Chairman's table. We already have a volunteer for the flowers so we just want someone for t'other one ladies. Don't all rush at once? Competition winners for a teapot were Hazel Taylor with her

authentic Japanese one and Rachel Kerry the runner-up. Helen was the tea hostess alongside Barbara and Gillian and we had a lovely selection of cakes at tea time. It was all hands in the kitchen for the washing-up before we were all engrossed in a quiz, wracking our brains sorting out the sweets and chocolates from the cryptic clues. Team winners were Mary, Barbara, Rosemarie, Rachel and Hazel who all received a bar of chocolate. Talking of a quiz, have you sent your entry in? 1st February is the deadline so I hope you have. Our next meeting is on the 16th February in the Sports and Social Club at the usual time of two o'clock when our speaker is local lass Rachel Baker who will give us tips on "General foot care". So if you fancy giving your tootsies a treat why not join us? You will be given a warm welcome and there is always the temptation of cake and the refreshing "cuppa" at tea time. See you there then,O.K.? Dot Williams

NEWS FROM WOOLSTHORPE MANOR It's still very quiet here but the visitors keep on trickling in, especially at weekends. That means we can do more behind the scenes – new rush matting for the Manor House to replace the bits worn out by visitors' feet, and

some survey work on the drainage in the farmyard.

Coming up we have our Stargazing Night on Friday 12 February from 5.30-8.30pm. The

Lincs Stardome is coming again – the whole universe in a tent! – and local astronomers talking about the sky at night, space, telescopes… anything astronomical! Booking is essential as it's always very popular. Prices are £4.25 for a child, £8.50 for adults, £21.50 for a family – call 01476 862823 or email [email protected] to book your place.

COLSTERWORTH AND WOOLSTHORPE OPEN GARDENSAre you a keen gardener? Would you be prepared to open your garden for a few hours to help support our parish Church? St John's is a church of great historical interest and attracts visitors from all over the world. It was the childhood church of Sir Isaac Newton and was one of the earliest churches in Lincolnshire. We are lucky to have it in our village, but old buildings require a great deal of maintenance, and our aim is to raise funds towards the upkeep of our church. To do this we are holding an Open Gardens Day on Sunday June 26th 2016, from 11.00am until 4.00pm. Visitors would enter using a pre-paid ticket and you would simply need to be there to to keep

an eye on things. Access to your home is obviously not expected. If you think you might like to show off your garden next year, no matter how large or small it may be, please phone Diane Lacey on 862065 or e-mail [email protected] for further details.

NATURAL HISTORY BULLETINThe cold spell finally arrived in the second week in January. We were treated to some spectacular sunrises and the strange phenomenon of daffodil flowers weighed down by snow. Looking skywards just before dawn there were several mornings when, just before dawn there were clear sightings of the space station. Freezing conditions mean hard times for mammals. If they do not hibernate, they must work hard to maintain their body temperature and obtain enough food. Many of the larger species are nocturnal but snow means a greater chance of finding their footprints in the snow. Sadly other sightings are mainly of road casualties. This January there was a most amazing discovery locally. The report came from someone who, out running, was convinced he had found an otter, although this seemed unlikely it was easy to confirm, both by its large size and the shape of its long tail — broad at the base, and then narrowing. It is almost twice the size of the fluffy tailed mink which has been seen in the past alongside the River Witham. A dead animal may pose more questions than answers. Injuries suggested a roadkill, but why was it out some distance from water. Had it been disturbed by hunting activities on the same day? Its size suggested

a solitary male. Both sexes can travel considerable distance to cover their territories (less food, mainly fish, equals larger territories) and are found in both lakes and rivers where the water is clean. In the 1950s the otter was listed as Endangered. By 1978 hunting them become illegal and they are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981. At this time they were considered extinct in central England, including all Lincolnshire. The main cause of their severe decline was deemed to be the use of chemical sprays, particularly dieldrin and DDT. This was found in water bodies, taken in by plants, invertebrates, fish and then otters. At each stage the chemicals become more concentrated. Animals at the top of the food chain, like otters, took in fatal amounts. Very recently we have seen the results of both protection and reintroduction programmes, including from their stronghold in Norfolk. In 2015 there were amazingly 17 sightings in Lincolnshire- though these were mainly road casualties. None were in our area, but there are reports of them within 10 miles in Rutland. Our local record on 9th January was the second for Lincolnshire this year. All specimens are collected and analysed so that we can learn more about them. For example their DNA will tell us to which

family group they belong. Many thanks for this record which may well help to protect the species in the future. In the garden the cold weather has finally brought more birds in to feed. Joining the house sparrows blackbirds and robins which have provided such amusement were a pair of bullfinches, parties of long tailed tits, coal great and blue tits, chaffinch, goldfinch and greenfinch. Two reed buntings in

one garden, were both males but one had the greyer head found in immature or early winter plumage. To look for in February This may be a different year for the arrival of early flowers. Many were out in December, but will the more seasonal weather now affect the early spring pattern? Please don't underestimate your observations of more common species. It seems we are in a period of change — less places for wildlife, closer relationships with man, months which are described as windiest, warmest, wettest, coldest warmest. Some species can adapt like the reed bunting that can now live in drier places, and even visits our gardens. I look forward to your observations and records at 61 Woolsthorpe Road, 860465 or e-mail [email protected].

Letter to Editor

My name is Denise Taylor, and I work as a Fundraiser and Speaker on behalf of the charities Hearing Dogs for Deaf People & Medical Detection Dogs. Both organisations provide dogs that do the most amazing work to help their disabled human companions and completely transform their lives. One of the ways that both charities are able to raise the necessary funds to train more desperately needed dogs, is by the sale of used postage stamps, and this is something that everyone in Colsterworth and surrounding villages can do to help. It does not cost you anything, but means the world to these organisations. Last year alone over £10,500 was raised - just from the sale of used postage stamps – enough to pay for the training of a dog. So I wonder whether your readers would kindly save their used postage stamps for us please? Getting them to us could not be easier, all you have to do is drop them in at Colsterworth Post Office or the mobile post van. I would also like to thank the proprietors of the Post Office for their ongoing support for our used stamp appeal and your readers who have already been so kind in supporting us. Whenever I visit the Post Office or the mobile unit I invariably come away with a carrier bag of stamps courtesy of people responding to the appeal. Yours sincerely Denise Taylor

Dear Editor Does anyone have any ideas when Colsterworth will be upgraded entirely to Fibre for internet access. According to the online checker it states it is in the area, but due to a high demand it is not available to anyone who does not have it already. Am I the only one having issues? Who can we raise this with collectively to get a bigger voice and something done about it sooner? I tried during the summer not long after the green boxes went live, but was told the same thing.

Canine Attack on CatCat Owners Beware! Our young, dark-brown tortoiseshell cat was picked up, shaken and viciously bitten several times by a canine, most likely a dog though possibly a fox. The attack took place during daylight hours of Christmas week, most probably along the old railway line walk in Woolsthorpe. Unfortunately for the cat and for us, her injuries proved fatal despite a nine day stay in the veterinary hospital. Let's hope this is an isolated incident!

March 2016 Sun 6th 11am Group Mothering Sunday at Colsterworth Church

We welcome all residents of Colsterworth and surrounding villages to any of our services.

We were pleased to welcome so many people at our Christmas services, with the Church full almost to overflowing for the Carol Service, our thanks to the singers from the school and the village singing group, and particularly big thank you to our members who supplied the refreshments after the service.

The Church looked splendid for Christmas, having been decorated by the flower arrangers, co-ordinated by Jenny, and a big thank you to all the decorators from the many village organisations who displayed their trees.

Church Coffee Morning - The February coffee morning will be hosted by Rosemarie Everitt, at 7 Walnut Grove, Colsterworth. All welcome from 10.00am – coffee, chat and a friendly get together, we look forward to welcoming you.

Some work is being undertaken at Colsterworth School, so there will be no more school family services until the end of April.
