IF YOU thInk abOUt It, we have been using paper with dark lines for ages. You probably used it in school as a child, perhaps tried to put a small minus sign just above the line to make it visible. At work you may have made notes from a meeting and not been entirely sure what a syllable or word meant because it clashed with the dark line crossing over it. You know, the pen makes dark lines and with dark lines on the paper we always have to put in extra effort to separate them. Without us really realis-ing it, these clashes reduce our concentration, distracting us. These dark supporting lines have been around for a very long time, actually since medieval times when iron gall ink was used for its lasting dark colour.

And so it happened that the story of the line took a completely different direction when the simple but ingenious idea of having writing paper with white ‘non-conflict’ lines occurred to Swed-ish designer Olof Hansson. Why would you not choose to use paper without distracting lines, if you could? It’s nicer to write on and easier to read from. The lines don’t show up on photocopies, there’s less glare in strong light, and people with dyslexia are helped with it, and more...

It’s your call of course, but we think it’s pretty much a no-brainer.

with the graphical support but without any

interference with what he wrote or drew.

Whitelines® believes in transparency and is one of the first, if not the first, paper company to publish a Carbon Footprint* on our products.

The Carbon Footprint of a Whitelines “Wire A4” notebook for example is, before compensation to zero, 0,20 kg Carbon Dioxide. This is the sum of CO2 emitted from the whole production cycle and transportation for that specific product to our warehouse in Växjö, Sweden. Whitelines® Carbon Footprint is calculated through a LCI (Life Cycle Inventory) carried out by U&W, a consult-ing group working with sustainability and CSR. In brief the emissions for our products come from Forestry – Logging – Transport from the woods to the mill – Paper production – Print and Post print – Transport to our warehouse.

Local Swedish production → low emissions.

0,20 kg as Carbon Footprint; means nothing to me?

At Whitelines, we make a serious effort to decrease our carbon footprint. We work to keep the emissions from production extremely low by using local production and a unique partnership with a Swedish pulp and paper mill (Nymölla mill) which produces carbon neutral paper. Whitelines focus on reducing carbon emissions, not just compensating for them.

However, all our (small) emissions are finally offset to net zero carbon emis-sions by planting trees in Uganda, where Whitelines works with U&W (www.uwab.se).

We claim that Whitelines® paper is healthier for the planet but would happily be challenged by other companies. All kinds of consumption causes stress on the climate, and users, distributors and producers must share this common concern. Our objective is of course to reduce the harm to the planet, not to win a silly competition between companies.

Why is this “eco-friendly”?

Whitelines notebooks are made in Swe-den, with very low environmental stress in all parts of the production/logistics chain. The paper mill has an exceptional environmental record.

How can it be “eco-friendly” to ship all the way from Sweden?

Shipping large batches by boat means ex-tremely small emissions per notepad. In total, producing in Sweden and shipping by boat results in lower CO2 emissions than if the products were to be produced overseas.

But don’t you use a lot of ink?

The amount of ink used to create the background tint is comparable to the amount of ink used to create ordinary black or grey lines on white paper; imag-ine that you take a line and “smear” it out to become tint instead.

Do you compensate your carbon emissions?

Yes we do! But, we want to prevent rather than compensate. Still there are always some emissions remaining even if very low, mainly from transportation. We are offsetting these emissions by planting trees in Africa (Uganda). Whitelines compensates the emissions from all operations into a Zero Carbon Footprint. This is being done together with the organisation U&W (www.uwab.se).

Is this paper recycled?

No, we don´t want to use recycled paper. It may sound strange but using recycled paper would be worse when you include all the handling in the calculation. The paper in Whitelines pads comes from wood, thinnings from managed forests in southern Sweden and saw mill chips. Managed forests are harvested and planted and are thus renewed all the time. Sweden is a country with a long tradition in forestry, pulp and paper, and the renewal of forests is an inte-grated and natural process. Nymölla Mill, where Whitelines’ paper is produced, is nevertheless certified in accordance with Chain of Custody FSC and PEFC.

Are Whitelines® pads FSC labelled?

No, normally not. The relevance of the FSC labelling is questioned in this case. This is due to the small amount of hard-wood in the pulp. The material used for the pulp comes mainly from soft wood which Nymölla Mill gets from small local forest owners, who have a long tradition of small scale healthy forestry. By combin-ing a small amount short fibres of mainly imported hardwood pulp with the strong long fibres of softwood pulp, our paper can achieve various desired properties. The pulp is produced using a so called “magnefite” process and is of course TCF (Totally Chlorine Free). The pulp is further mixed with the filling agent PCC (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate), which is specially adapted to our paper.

If it’s eco friendly, why is it not tagged with the wave/tree/ bear/star/swan tag I’m used to?

The paper used in Whitelines pads, Mul-tiCopy, is labelled with the Nordic Swan, the EU Flower, TCF (Totally Chlorine Free) label, and is also available FSC labelled. All countries have their own eco labelling system. That is the main reason White-lines has chosen to work with the Carbon Footprint measurement– it is neutral, objective, and possible to calculate and audit regardless of geography.

How about the rest of the company?

At Whitelines we are driven by our core values and we are not just paying lip service like some companies might do. This matter can never be a fairy tale. Our standpoint is that all kind of operations cause emissions! We have to be clear about that and at Whitelines we do every-thing we can to minimize the impact on the environment from all our operations. Of course we turn off the light, prefer to travel by train and bike, eat little meat and compensate for the flights we need to take, etc. Just like we think everyone should.

Can you give me anything to compare with?

It´s hard to find data as we are the first ones to do this in the business but maybe a figure to start with could be newspaper paper. (Large and trimmed production processes with a lot recycled paper and poor paper quality.) The Swed-ish average is 1,50 kg CO2 emissions/ kg paper. The German average is 2,14 kg CO2 / kg paper. Our comparable figure is 0,46 kg CO2/kg paper.

DiaryA Whitelines Diary at last! A dream has come true at Whitelines. For a long time (even before Whitelines was founded) everyone at Whitelines suffered from the dark distracting lines in diarys. All Whitelines products are manufactured in

Sweden. Whitelines Custom editions are nor-mally produced from a minimum volume of 1000 units. Unit costs drop fast with higher volumes.

Zero Carbon emission

In ShORt. All Whitelines products have been rather pricy. This has been a consequence of our strict environmental and pro-duction quality requirements and it has meant that Whitelines has been positioned at the “upper medium” segment of the market.

We have now made structural changes (for example more in house production) which allow us to adjust the price levels dramatically for some products. We have also learned that certain products need to be a bit more expensive if we want to keep the quality. (The most important change is probably that our bestselling product “Wire” will be priced substantially lower!)

These structural changes and the introduction of several new lines in the range now enable us to present a brand new product strategy.
