Background• North Bethesda is quickly becoming

a center for economic development• The area is transitioning from a

suburban to an urban environment• Major development is occurring

along the I-270 corridor and the White Flint area

• Significant capacity growth is expected in the region

3

North Bethesda Future Development

North Bethesda continues to grow, with more than 10 million sq. ft. of development slated for the area

Project Overview• We are constructing a new 69kV/13kV

distribution substation in the White Flint area• The White Flint substation will allow us to

continue to deliver safe, reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to nearby families and businesses in the growing North Bethesda area

• Reliability enhancement work includes extending current 69kV and 13kV feeders from surrounding substations to White Flinto This involves both underground transmission and

overhead transmission construction

Project Design

• The design of the project was a multi-year process including several alternative analyses, community meetings, and discussions with permitting authorities

• After extensive analysis, Pepco and its specialty vendors designed the substation and feeder extensions to meet the demands of the surrounding area with consideration for future growth

• All aspects of the design – location, equipment type, and architectural aesthetic –were considered and incorporated into the final design

Upcoming Project Construction• On Aug. 30, Pepco's construction contractor, CW &

Sons, will begin a 6-month construction effort on thewestbound lanes of Randolph Rd., between Nebel St.and Parklawn Dr.o Work includes excavation of two micro-tunnels under the

CSX railroad tracks

• Westbound lanes of Randolph Rd. will be closed, and allwestbound traffic will be detoured to Parklawn Dr.

• Eastbound lanes on Randolph Rd. will remain open totraffic

• Businesses located along the westbound side of thisstretch of road will remain open throughout theconstruction and will be accessible via the eastboundlanes of Randolph Rd.

• Sidewalks on Randolph Rd. will remain open topedestrians throughout construction
