Instructions for Projects of Collection #3

Handy tips:

• A pair of tweezers, hemostats, or a tiny crochet hook can be extremely helpful when inserting the buttonettes into the eyelets. (Please see Picture 1 below for explanation of “buttonette” and “eyelet” for 3D ornaments.) Insert the tip of the hemostats or crochet hook into the eyelet, grasp the buttonette, and pull through. A stiletto could also be used to “push” the buttonette into the eyelet.

• The ornaments look and wear better when left fairly stiff. When the design is finished stitching, wash the design lightly so that some of the water soluble stabilizer stays in the design. It is better to hold the ornament gently and allow the water to flow through rather than working at or scrubbing the lace.

• If item becomes too limp to work with, dissolve scraps of AquaMesh, Aquafilm or BadgeMaster in warm water and apply to the item to re-stiffen.

Buttonette Eyelet

3D Bell Ornaments - 1) Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines (page 7) and stitch 6 bell pieces per bell

ornament. There are 5 different pieces to choose from. They are completely interchangeable so use 6 of the same or mix them up as you wish.

2) With 2 of the 6 stitched pieces, insert a buttonette of piece 1 into the eyelet of piece 2; continue until all 9 buttonettes are inserted into the eyelets.

3) Continue step 2 until all 6 pieces are buttoned together. Please note: to add a hanger to your ornament do not button both sides of piece 6.

4) To add a hanger to your ornament, follow Hanging Your Ornament instructions (page 8). 5) To complete the ornament button piece 6 into piece 1. 3D Globe Ornament 1) Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines (page 7) and stitch 6 globe pieces per

globe ornament. There are 4 different pieces to choose from. They are completely interchangeable so use 6 of the same or mix them up as you wish.

2) With 2 of the 6 stitched pieces, insert a buttonette of piece 1 into the eyelet of piece 2; continue until all 11 buttonettes are inserted into the eyelets.

3) Continue step 2 until all 6 pieces are buttoned together. Please note: to add a hanger to your ornament do not button both sides of piece 6.

4) To add a hanger to your ornament, follow Hanging Your Ornament instructions (page 8). 5) To complete the ornament button piece 6 into piece 1. 3D Star Ornament 1) Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines (page 7) and stitch 10 star ornament

pieces for each 3D star ornament desired. There are 3 different pieces to choose from. They are completely interchangeable so use 10 of the same or mix them up as you wish.

2) Lay 5 of the pieces together with short sides toward one another (see pic 2 for reference of short side). This will create a flat 5 point star.

3) Start with the short side of piece 1 and insert the 3 buttonettes into the 3 eyelets of piece 2.

4) Continue buttoning buttonettes into eyelets until all 5 pieces are buttoned together.

5) With remaining 5 stitched pieces repeat steps 2 through 4; this will create another flat 5 point star.

6) Place the 2 flat stars with wrong sides together.

7) Create the 3D Star Ornament by inserting the buttonette into the eyelets that line both edges of the flat stars. As you continue to button the pieces together the centers will pop out for the sides to match up.

8) Thread ribbon through 1 of the points of the completed star to hang.


Name Card Holder 1) Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines and Appliqué Instructions (page 7) and

stitch 1 of design OC00513 “FSL Lace Name Card Holder Appliqué”. 2) Lay nameplate with right side down. 3) Bring buttonette from pointed end up and insert it into the eyelet in the center of the circle of

the opposite end. (Picture 03) 4) Finger press the edges of the bottom so that the name card

holder will stand up properly. (Picture 04) 5) Insert bottom 2 edges of name card into the slits which are

sewn into the front of the name card holder. (Picture 05)

Napkin Corner and Placemat Corner There are 2 different methods that can be used with the napkin and placemat corners. You can: A) Embroider the corners as freestanding lace and tack them onto your napkin or placemat. B) Create a lace corner by removing part of your napkin or placemat. Method A 1) Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines and Appliqué Instructions (page 7) and

stitch corner design(s). (Designs OC00514 Napkin Corner or OC00515 Placemat Corner) The first color to stitch for the corner designs is a placement stitch that is needed only for Method B. Either skip this color or trim the thread tail that it will leave from both ends of the design.

2) Attach FSL corner to your napkin or placemat by hand tacking in place. Method B 1) Hoop 1 layer of OESD AquaMesh Wash-Away Stabilizer. 2) Attach hoop to machine and stitch only color number 1 of corner design. This will stitch

only a placement guide stitch. 3) Remove hoop from machine but do not remove stabilizer from hoop. 4) Spray hooped stabilizer with 101 Quilt Basting Spray. 5) Adhere corner of placemat or napkin to the hooped

stabilizer with the edges of the placemat or napkin lining up with the edges of the placement guide stitch. (Picture 06)

6) Reattach hoop to machine and stitch color number 2. This will stitch your cut line.

7) Using small, sharp scissors carefully cut away excess fabric. (Picture 07)

8) Finish stitching design. 9) Remove hoop from machine and stabilizer from hoop. 10) Cut away excess stabilizer. 11) Remove remaining stabilizer by rinsing under warm

water. 12) Repeat for other corners as desired

Tree Skirt Edging Complete instructions on both embroidering and constructing the tree skirt can be found on page 12. Ribbon Napkin Ring 1) Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines and Appliqué Instructions (page 7) and

stitch 1 of design OC00516 “FSL Lace Napkin Ring”. 2) Insert the buttonette of 1 end into the eyelet at the opposite end to form a ring. 3) Slide napkin ring over folded napkin. Lace Ribbon 1) Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines and Appliqué Instructions (page 7) and

stitch as many of designs OC00510 & OC00511 “FSL Lace Ribbon” as is necessary to create desired length of ribbon.

2) Create one continuous length of ribbon by tacking ends of pieces together by either hand tacking or using the bar tack option on your sewing machine.

Cutwork Instructions

The following designs contain an area of cutwork: OC00502 3-D Bell Ornament with Dove Cutwork OC00503 3-D Bell Ornament with Snowflake Cutwork OC00504 3-D Bell Ornament with Star Cutwork OC00517 3-D Globe Ornament with Star Cutwork OC00518 3-D Globe Ornament with Fancy Cutwork Cutwork designs OC00506, OC00507, OC00508 and OC00509 are also included to be used as accent pieces to coordinate your holiday décor. 1) Hoop one layer of OESD BadgeMaster or OESD AquaMesh Wash-Away

Stabilizer with your chosen fabric. 2) Begin stitching design stopping after the Cutwork Guide Stitch. (Picture

08) 3) Remove hoop from machine but do not remove fabric from hoop. 4) Using small sharp scissors, carefully cut fabric away being careful

to cut right up to the cut stitch. Do not cut through stabilizer, keep it intact. (Picture 09)

5) Repeat these steps for all cut pieces in the design. 6) Reattach hoop to machine and complete the remaining color

changes. (Picture 10) 7) Remove excess stabilizer by following directions on the

packaging.

Tree Skirt with Freestanding Lace Edging SUPPLIES:

• OESD 2009 Christmas Collection #3 • 2 ½ yards Red Benartex fabric • Fabric for binding edges • 3 yards ribbon for ties • OESD LightWeight Tear-Away Stabilizer

(or tracing paper) • OESD AquaMesh Wash-Away Stabilizer • Isacord Embroidery Thread for embroidery • 101 Quilt Basting Spray • Organ Titanium Embroidery needles Size 80/12 • Embroidery Machine • Sewing machine

PREPARE THE PATTERN:

• Cut out the printed pattern (page 15). • Place the printed pattern over a long length of

Tear-Away Stabilizer. • Extend both side lines until the total length of

each side is 18 ½”. • Connect the ends of the 2 lines with a straight line. • Fold pattern in half lengthwise and crease. Mark along the crease for the straight of grain.

CUT OUT SKIRT PANELS:

Using the pattern created above cut 12 panels from the red fabric. Note: It is recommended that dark fabrics such as red be pre-washed.

EMBROIDER PANELS:

• Hoop 2 layers of OESD AquaMesh Wash-Away Stabilizer. • Attach hoop to machine and stitch only color number 1 of

design OC00512. This will stitch only a placement guide. • Remove hoop from machine but do not remove stabilizer

from hoop. • Spray hooped stabilizer with 101 Quilt Basting Spray. • Adhere one panel to the stabilizer centering edge of fabric

within the placement guide. The “point” of the placement guide stitch will point toward the “point” of the panel. (PHOTO 01)

• Reattach hoop to machine and stitch color number 2. This will stitch your cut line.

• Using small, sharp scissors, carefully cut away excess fabric. (PHOTO 02)

• Finish stitching design. • Remove hoop from machine and stabilizer from hoop. • Cut away excess stabilizer. • Remove remaining stabilizer by rinsing under warm water. Note that we recommend pre-washing your

fabric. If after rinsing your panels it appears that your thread is dyed you will need to repeat the rinsing process. Isacord thread will not take on a new color, therefore if it appears that it has, this means that there is starch left on the thread and the starch will hold dye and make the thread appear dyed.

• Repeat for all 12 panels.

CONSTRUCT THE SKIRT

• There will be approximately ¼” excess fabric on both ends of each panel. Trim corners away by cutting right up to the lace. (PHOTO 03)

• Place 2 panels right sides together lining up lace. Starting right next to lace, stitch ¼” seam starting at lace. Stitching should be placed right next to the lace.

• Press seam. • Continue stitching panels together until all 12 have been used. Do

not stitch 1st and 12th panels together as this will need to be left open so that the skirt can be placed around base of tree.

PERFECTING THE CENTER:

• The center of your skirt may be a bit jagged. To even this up, take a round object such as a can of spray and center over the hole. Trace around can using a water soluble pen. (PHOTO 04)

• Cut around drawn circle. FINISHING:

• To finish edges, bind both raw edges and inside circle. • To close skirt, attach ribbon to each open side. (PHOTO 05)

UNCHECKED or the “Page Scaling” option must be set to NONE depending on your printers options. If this option is set incorrectly, the print will not

work correctly as a pattern because it will not print at actual size.
