CHILDREN’S HOUSE Afternoon ProgramsDear Parents:

Whitby recognizes that longer school days may be desirable or necessary for your family. Children who are enrolled in morning classes have the option to register for our developmentally appropriate afternoon programs which are tailored to each age group. All of these give your child increased socialization opportunities with same-age students while introducing them to more of Whitby’s nurturing teaching sta!. Our programs engage children in learning as an extension of our Montessori– International Baccalaureate curriculum, allowing them to follow their interests and make the discoveries which lead to con"dent, accomplished learners.

The following pages provide descriptions of each of our afternoon programs, which run Monday through Thursday. Primary 3’s all participate as an integral part of their academic day. Younger children can participate for an additional fee. Placement in these programs follows a child’s overall readiness, attention span, stamina and the ability to follow ground rules and adjust to the class group. Please refer to the information below for start dates of our afternoon programs. If the teacher believes your child needs more time to adjust to the morning routine, he or she may join at a later date and program fees will be prorated accordingly.

The majority of Primary children participate in the afternoon programs. If you have any questions about our programs or your child’s readiness to participate, please feel free to contact me.

STEPPING STONES Extended Day

Stepping Stones Extended Day program provides increased opportunities for the very young child to develop social skills and explore the learning environment as a continuation of the morn-ing curriculum. Children who attend afternoon groups are brought together from all morning classrooms, extending socialization op-portunities. Parents provide lunch for their students, and the rituals of table setting, eating and cleaning up encourage independence and a healthy approach to mealtimes. Children who nap have a quiet room for resting while outdoor and indoor spaces are open for enriching activities under the supervision of our caring Stepping Stones teachers.

PRIMARY 1 Enrichment

Children who are ready for a longer school day will bene"t from Primary 1 Enrichment. This afternoon program brings together same-age children in one of Whitby’s beautiful classrooms. Taught by Primary and Stepping Stones teachers, the afternoon schedule augments the morning program to continue developing language, math, science, and social skills. A fully engaging agenda of special activities may include Spanish, Chinese, music, yoga, arts and crafts and cooking throughout the week. Eating lunch together provides opportunities to practice grace, courtesy and independence. (Chil-dren may bring lunch from home or order from the school’s cater-er.) An integral part of every day, outdoor time (weather permitting) with peers helps build caring relationships while encouraging the development of physical skills and creative play.

Second year Primary children have plenty of energy for focused work and play that is ful"lled through Montessori Plus. After the morning program concludes with outdoor playtime, eating lunch with other Primary 2’s provides opportunities to build community while practicing grace and courtesy. (Children may bring lunch from home or order from the school’s caterer.) Primary 2 partici-pants then engage in thoughtfully planned activities such as Span-ish, Chinese, science, culture, music, arts and crafts, cooking, yoga and visits to the library. Increased socialization with peers is both a pleasure and a perk of this afternoon opportunity. In addition, this group will discover untapped abilities through the creation of a dramatic production they will perform for parents and siblings.

Third year Primary children bene"t from time with their same-age peers, after a social lunch break, to develop writing, math and science skills as well as pursue extended projects. In combined classrooms of Primary 3’s, children work on research projects, an autobiography, a "ction story and their 3rd Year Graduation speeches in a Writer’s Workshop format. This focused time develops handwriting, spelling and introduces editing skills. These projects culminate with an Author’s Sharing celebration with older students at Whitby, developing poise and public speaking skills. Math and language, geography, culture, Spanish and science units are also studied in depth in the afternoon. Whitby’s signature physical science unit is a winter pursuit inspiring many young scientists! Afternoon work with multiple Primary teachers ensures targeted individualized attention.
