Fresh faces, new semester, club auditions, and a dive into unexplored courses - the quarter gone by at Shiv Nadar University has had much going on, as the freshmen Class joins in, and the existing ones (Classes) return to the campus after summer break.

The excitement of ‘new’ swept the campus throughout the initial days, and slowly life is falling into a pattern now. The strangers are becoming friends, and the unknown territories are turning into hangouts.

While July went away in frenzy with Class of 2021 joining and settling down, August and September marked an important chapter in Shiv Nadar University's timeline.

On 12 August 2017, Bharat Ratna Prof. C.N.R. Rao visited the University for a lecture and an interaction with students. His visit was followed by other dignitaries - Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, Outstanding Scientist and Director of INMAS, DRDO; and Dr. Rajiv Sharma, Secretary, SERB-DST. Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Director of Indo-French Cenre for the Promotion of Advanced Research also visited the campus in July. These visits reaffirm Shiv Nadar University's commitment towards forming a research focused institution where students and scholars get the opportunity to interact with some of the finest minds in research.

Not just Life Sciences, the University is putting, strong efforts in the area of Social Sciences as well with its first batch of Water Science and Policy (WSP) Certificate Program successfully completing the module. The first-of-its-kind WSP program is delivered by experts around the world who have worked on issues related to water, made policies and initiated change. The University has also signed up an MoU with Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) to collaborate academically on matters relating to international relations, and regional and global security.

The multidisciplinary approach has led to success at all levels. Our sports enthusiasts who participated in the inter-university sports event - Banyan League 2016-17, brought home the Champion’s trophy (winning multiple titles) this quarter. Kudos! to the team.

As we enter fall, it is not just the weather that's changing. With a slew of inter-college festivals and competitions lined up in the coming months, the students’ community is slowly warming up and prepping for much more exciting times ahead.

Musings

The pen hovered over the paper, the ink forming a pool of black. The plant next to the window danced with easeto the tune of the breeze.

He looked out the window at the dark, starry sky,why must white always be lustrous on black? No, no, no, not this time, he thought. The tiny drops of black swallowed the white canvasas they streaked across like shooting starsforming wondrous words in the white sky.

He stopped looking at the sky above, and looked at the ocean below. The sun lit the water a bright blue, and the waves seemed to move just a tad slow.

They hit the beach gently, before taking their leave, but not before leaving behind gifts,of wet words with seashells.

The pen hovered no longer, the pool of black began to run,and became a stream, the poem was done.

Where Do Words Come From

Subtle tinges of olive greenSpread across this homely place,Tiny oblivious heads dig in,Working for the rat race.

Million thoughts drifting in,Millions tend to slip away.Deserting their own existence,People trying to find ‘the’ way.

Not a single second to waste,You live only once, they’ll all say.Yet you’ll find each soul,Eating its own happiness away.

No force is strong enough,To rip away a human’s faith,Yet a single turn of event ,Can make a mask fall from grace.

Deepening cuts of despondency ,Disguised as an old intimate. The meaning of life is hiddenSomewhere deep in our own faded veins.

Students’ Day Out

Rural Experiential Practicum

The second year students of I-Global MBA program experienced a unique rural immersion through one of the important component of their stint at Shiv Nadar University - Rural Experiential Practicum (REP). It is a mandatory component of the MBA curriculum during which students stay in villages for 10 days. The Practicum helps them understand the socio-cultural, political and economic factors and sensitize the students to living conditions in rural India. It also lets them explore the opportunities for doing business at the bottom of the pyramid.

This year REP was organized in association with 8 reputed NGOs and government agencies involved in rural development activities. A group of six to eight students were attached to each organization. These students spent their stint of 10 days living with the villagers and eating the food provided by them. The students were required to work on a project during their stay in villages.

The organizations under which students pursued their REP include Keystone Foundation (Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu); The Timbaktu Collective (Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh); Mulkanoor Co-operative Rural Bank and Marketing Society Ltd., (Karimnagar, Telangana); Uttar Rajasthan Milk Union Limited (Urmul) (Bikaner, Rajasthan); Naandi Foundation (Rewari & Mahendergarh, Haryana); Chirag (Nainital, Uttarakhand); Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) (3 locations in UP); and HCL Foundation (Hardoi, UP).

Field Study Tour to NTPC Thermal Power Plant, Dadri

As part of the field study tour students of CCC704: Environmental Studies course visited NTPC Thermal Power Plant on 9 and 23 September 2017. Faculty of NTPC explained the operations involved in power generation using coal, gas and solar energy to Shiv Nadar University students. Flora-Fauna

Euphorbia hirta L. (Asthma Plant)

Euphorbia hirta, belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae, is a very common weed found throughout the year along road sides, side of pathways, open grasslands, railway lines, open and waste fields. It is small, erect or decumbent annual herb, 10-30 cm high. Stem characterised by milky latex and appressed with long yellowish hairs. The plant is known to be effective in treating many diseases/ailments. It has traditionally been used to treat bronchial and respiratory diseases (bronchitic asthma, laryngeal spasm asthma, bronchitis, hay fever, etc.), and in conjunctivitis. Though in modern herbalism it is more used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhea, dysentery, intestinal parasitosis, amoebic dysentery, etc.). In Ayurveda, an extract of the Euphorbia hirta is given to bronchitis patients; other symptoms like colds, bronchitis, asthma and coughs are also relieved. The extract of this plant is effective in controlling

venereal diseases like gonorrhea and syphilis. A decoction made from the root of the plant increases lactation in women nursing their babies. A decoction made from the root of Euphorbia plant is used for gargling to relieve thrush and mouth ulcers. The plant is also used for relieving toothache, severe headache, rheumatism and colic, and for treating urogenital diseases like kidney stones, menstrual problems and venereal diseases. As an antidote for snakebites and scorpion stings the extract of the plant is found to be effective. The plant is also applied externally to treat dermatitis, eczema and irritated skin.

The sprawling 286 acre campus of Shiv Nadar University is blessed with natural bounty and enjoys the company of diverse flora and fauna. In this edition, continuing with our exploration of medicinal plants, we bring to you Euphorbia Hirta L. (Asthma Plant). And, the world's tallest flying bird Sarus Crane, who is a frequent visitor at the University

Sarus crane (Antigone antigone)

Sarus crane (Antigone antigone) is the tallest flying bird in the world standing 152-156 cm tall with a wingspan of 240 cm. It has a predominantly grey plumage with a naked red head and upper neck and pale red legs. Females are smaller, growing to about 35-40 kg, while the males grow bigger, up to 40-45 kg. It is a social creature, found mostly in pairs or small groups of three or four. Known to mate for life with a single partner, its breeding season coincides with heavy rainfall in monsoon. Nests are constructed on water in natural wetlands or in flooded paddy fields. Usually a clutch has only one or two eggs, which are incubated by both parents for a period of 26 to 35 days. The juveniles follow their parents from the day of birth. The Sarus crane is found in Indian sub-continent, south-east Asia and northern Australia with an estimated global population of 25,000-37,000 individuals. In the Indian subcontinent, it is found in northern and central India, Terai Nepal and Pakistan. It was once a common site in the paddy fields of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Assam. Their population is now on the decline with only 15,000-20,000 found in India, a majority of which are in Uttar Pradesh. The Sarus crane is known for its ability to live in association with humans, inhabiting open, cultivated, well watered plains, marshlands and jheels. These areas suit them well for foraging, roosting and nesting. (Source: WWF)
