Dear Whistler Secondary School Families, WSS students finished their first quarter of the school year this month by submitting a wide variety of evidence of their learning, showing that students at WSS are highly capable of success in high school. Thanks and appreciation go out to our WSS Staff who prepared the night before and cooked up deli-cious food at the very early hours of the Annual Grad Breakfast on Oct. 4th. We wish all the grads a very successful last year here at WSS and look forward to watching them proudly cross the stage in June. Big thanks to our Parents, Students & Staff who came together for the Parent-Student-Teacher Con-ferences on Oct 11th to meet your child’s teachers and check in on their success to date. If you have additional questions now that students and parents have received the first report card of the school year (issued Nov 19th) please contact the teachers individually by calling our main office or emailing them directly. Thanks also to the PAC & Parents who organized and hosted another highly successful and well attended Career Day on Oct 17th. The wide variety of community members who shared their career paths & passions were exceptional and many students found new future possibilities thanks to their personalized stories and expert advice. Thanks also to the PAC & Parents (almost 100 of you!) who continue to volunteer on a weekly basis, preparing and selling hot lunches daily, to our entire student body. Your time and energy are truly appreciated by all. Thanks to our Leadership Students & Mr. Hall for organizing and leading several Halloween activities including an ever popular costume show in the MPR. Thanks also to our Athletic Leadership Stu-dents & Ms. Chevrette for inviting the entire student body to participate in a Halloween themed Pep Rally complete with high energy and impressive choreography from our WSS Cheerlead-ing Team. Final thanks to several of our 2019 Grad Students & Parents for designing and as-sembling a truly creepy Haunted House for those who dared to enter along with several games for kids & parents alike to enjoy. Thanks to all the Grad Parents & Grads of 2019 as well as the new Parent Exec & Student Exec who have met several times now and have been fundraising up a storm from the start. Thanks for contin-uing to support our grads with each fundraising event as they save for and prepare for the prom in June 2019. Thanks to all our Fall Season Coaches for Cross Country, Volleyball, & Rugby. Whether you’re a teacher, a community member or one of our students we truly appreciate all the hours of commit-ment and passion you bring to each of our teams. Your volunteerism and leadership are much ap-preciated. Thanks to the students of WSS this term for working together to learn & have fun while still remem-bering that in order to share our space here at WSS we must continue to do so with both SAFETY & RESPECT.
Parents & Guardians, thanks for continuing to support our students both at home and at school, it is truly a team effort and we appreciate your cooperation. I wish all WSS students an even more suc-cessful term ahead and a highly productive end to the first Semester at the end of January. Make yourselves proud. Sincerely,
Robin L. Kirk Robin L. Kirk – Principal WSS “We’re the Storm You Won’t Want to Miss”

We Scare Hunger Food Drive 2018
This year’s WSS leadership team set out on Halloween night on to collect donations for the local food bank. Students set up collection stations across Whistler in popular trick or treating neighborhoods including Tapley’s, Rainbow, Black Tusk and Spruce Grove.
Students stood in the cold for hours on end collecting donations. Their work was by no means in vain! The Tapley’s group collected roughly 300 items and $684 in dona-tions. The Rainbow crew received 96kg of non-perishables! To top it off, another 35kg of food was donated at the school. WSS has taken part in the We Scare Hunger campaign for six years as part of the Me to We local impact. The Food Bank is very thankful for the effort put into this project year after year. It is safe to say that this year we gave hunger a fright!

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers that have made the first couple months of the hot lunch pro-gram a success! A special thanks to the team leaders, Kerri, Linda, Lee and Tanya, who have taken on extra responsibilities to make sure that your kids get a great an affordable lunch daily. Monday lunch is now Teriyaki meatballs over rice with edamame and Thursday’s lunch, chicken or black bean quesadilla, has been a real hit and we are selling out weekly. Pasta Tuesdays for December with be Mac and Cheese served with Caesar salad. It may only be featured for one month so let your kid’s know to try it out.
Lunches are $5 cash or you can buy lunch cards in sets of 10 lunches for $50 by cheque payable to WSS PAC or online (head to wsspac.wordpress.com). There is no credit, so please make sure to send money in ahead of time. Paying ahead makes it easier on everyone. We always have room for Volunteers with on-call team and there are a couple regular openings that need filling . We will be making a new roster for January so please contact our lunch program coordinator, Kristi Wells, at [email protected] if you can help out in any way or have any questions.
Your child gets a free lunch every time you volunteer and you get to work with great people (we are often scolded for
laughing too loud in the kitchen )….Plus you help the PAC raise much needed funds for school enrichment. Everyone wins!

Hockey & Soccer Academy Update: Festival of Trees Fundraiser - B.C.'s Children's Hospital – brought to you by the
Four Season’s Hotel One of the important responsibilities of our school academies is to show leader-ship within our school and also in the greater community. One way we do this is by supporting the Four Season's Hotel, Festival of Trees Fundraiser, in which all money raised goes towards supporting B.C.'s Children's Hospital. Last year, between the soccer and hockey academies we raised $995.45 and we can beat that amount this year. Stay tuned for the schedule of our fundraising events. We are doing a friendly competition between the soccer and hockey academies again to see who can raise the most money. We will have friendly exhibition games in the gym at lunch that students have to pay to watch and we will also have yummy bake sales. On Tuesday November 20th, 5:00-8:00pm the tree lighting event took place at the Four Seasons Hotel with goodies and refreshments provided and all students were invited to attend. Please take some time over the next few weeks to see the beautiful trees decorated at the Four Seasons and vote on your favourite!

The cross country running team had an amazing
season. Here are the highlights from zones.
Junior Girls Cross Country:
With 58 competitors in the Jr. Girls Division,
Kacey Cox ran a pretty even paced race with a
good finishing kick to come in 12th overall with a
time of 19:18.02, Ries Holmes had a strong finish-
ing kick to place 36th overall with a time of
21:07.21.
Junior Boys Cross Country:
With 84 competitors in the Jr. Boys Division, Dax
Francis had a fantastic negative split (faster sec-
ond lap than first lap) to finish in 28th position
overall in 17:41.14.
Senior Boys Cross Country:
With 65 competitors in the Sr. Boys Division, Evan
Allman left nothing behind on the course and fin-
ished in 17th overall in a time of 25:49.92. Raul
Oficialgegui ran a solid race with a strong finish
line run to place 31st overall in a time of 28: 07.08.
Ben Hepditch did an awesome job out on the
course, very good pacing, and finished 34th overall
in a time of 28:16.77.
Evan Allman & Casey Cox representing our school
at the Provincials on Vancouver Island. With ath-
letes from all across BC they held their own and
enjoyed every minute of it. Thank - you do Dixie
Cox for taking them and thank you to Coach Diane
De Man for preparing these athletes so well.
The Senior Girls Volleyball Gold Team had a busy
season, competing in both the Sea-to-Sky and
North Shore Leagues. Led by co-captains Molly
Long & Jade Eberhard, the team finished 5-1 in
the Sea-to-Sky regular season. In the city, they
encountered strong competition; however, the
team delivered many strong performances proving
that they were more than capable of playing
against teams comprised of mostly club volleyball
players. Season highlights included hosting
Rockridge at home in front of a supportive Whis-
tler crowd, winning the consolation finals of a tour-
nament in Burnaby and wining the sea to sky dis-
trict finals. Thanks to Gina Mollicone-Long for
helping manage the team’s travel schedule and to
all the supportive parents who drove, cheered and
helped at practices. As well as their coach Andrew
Long.
The Whistler Senior Girls Volleyball Blue Team
had an amazing season this year. The team was
comprised of entirely grade 11s and they were still
able to win games against Howe Sound and Pember-
ton A in the regular season. They met Pemberton A
in the semifinals at our sea to sky districts but un-
fortunately lost 15-13 in a very close and exciting
third game. They were fortunate to have an in-
credible setter, Sophia Chalk; strong middle play-
ers who dominated at the net, Hannah McKenzie

and Kaitlyn Hill; fantastic back row passing and
digging from Lilli and Erin Wilson; and overall
great playing and amazing serving from Abby Un-
ruh and Samantha Deally. The girls developed so
much over the season and displayed exceptional
teamwork. They are looking forward to coming
back for the win next year! Big thanks to Kirsten
Lowe our community coach.
This season, the grade 9 Girls Volleyball
Blue Team improved more than we have ever
seen any team improve in a season. The girls
were committed, hard-working, and always
had positive attitudes, no matter what hap-
pened. Throughout all the practices and
games these players poured their whole
hearts in and showed a genuine love for the
sport that is portrayed in every hit, serve,
pass, and set. The girls started with vastly
different skill levels, but as the season pro-
gressed the girls showed huge improvement,
entering in the top standings into the Dis-
trict Championships. Some season highlights
included: crushing 15 overhand serves in a
row, winning a set 25-4, perfect digs, and
amazing spikes in each game. The athletic
leadership students who coached are so
proud of all of these girls an all they have ac-
complished throughout the season. A big
shout out to those coaches, Jerita Mingoti
and Rachel Unruh.
This season, the grade 9 Girls Volleyball
Yellow Team achieved so much in such a
short season. The girls improved tremen-
dously and grew closer as a team. Even
though the team did not get as far as they
would have liked in the district champion-
ships, the girls played their best game yet. It
was a very close match and everyone should
be proud of how well they played. Thanks to
our athletic leadership coaches, Jade Eber-
hard, Jen Lafreniere and Sam Deally.
This year, the grade 8 girls volleyball team
had two teams: yellow and blue. Both
teams had a great season; the girls started
out with mixed skill levels and mixed
knowledge of the game, but they showed a lot
of improvement and enthusiasm. They were
hardworking and coachable and this led the
teams to go into the finals in first and sec-
ond place. They both won against Pemberton
and Don Ross and ended up playing each oth-
er in the final where Yellow took first place
and Blue took second place. Season high-
lights included learning how to spike, and be-
coming closer as a team The girls had a very
successful season and grew as both players
and people. A big shout out to their coaches
who are also athletic leadership students

This year the grade 10 girls volleyball team
had two teams: yellow and blue. They had a
great season competing against the team from
Pemberton. The Whistler blue and yellow
team really improved with their spiking and
serving during the season, some also moved up
to overhand serving. The girls all had an in-
credible drive to improve and the coaches re-
ally saw this throughout the season. Their
teamwork, skills, participation and competi-
tiveness grew tremendously as the season un-
folded. The teams were always so positive,
and supportive of each other. They were also
very respectful, and all of their coaches had
an amazing time teaching them. The team is
made up of such a wonderful group of tal-
ented girls, which made the coaches volleyball
season so much more enjoyable. Watching
them play and have such a fun time was so ful-
filling, and seeing them win a game as a team
made the coaches feel like they had succeed-
ed in our duties as a coach. Overall, the
coaches couldn’t be prouder of the players
and their accomplishments this season. Look-
ing forward to 2019 and their continued ef-
forts and excellence! A big shout out to their
community coach Stephanie Redmond with
assistant coaches and athletic leadership stu-
dents Kaitlyn Hill & Erin Wilson.
A huge thank you to all of our parent super-
visors, Jodie Schunselaar, Lee Erickson,
Louise Tomcheck, Steve McCullough, Penny
McLeod, Susan Hamersley and all the other
parents who drive our athletes to away
