Whidbey General Hospital’s new CEO will assume her duties April 20.

Geri Forbes, most recently CEO of Doctor’s Memorial Hospital in Florida, will replace CEO Tom Tomasino, who has served as Whidbey General’s CEO for five years.

“I look forward to helping lead the team at Whidbey General Hospital and Clinics and wish to express my appreciation to the hospital board, physicians, staff and community for entrusting me with the role of CEO,” said Forbes in a statement emailed by the hospital. “My family and I are excited to relocate to Coupeville as I assume my new role on April 20.”

Whidbey General Hospital District board members adopted a resolution finalizing Forbes’ hiring during Monday’s regular meeting.

Rick Rennebohm is taking matters into his own hands.

Owner of several Oak Harbor buildings, Rennebohm said he’s tired of cleaning up graffiti.

Most recently, his two-story building on Pioneer Way and Midway Boulevard was tagged. Rennebohm just repainted the entire building last summer, making the graf-fiti all the more frustrating.

“I just spent a bundle of money on that building,” Rennebohm said. “It was tagged pretty heavily. I’m mad because it’s an ongoing prob-lem in Oak Harbor and no one seems to be doing anything about it.”

He is offering $500 for infor-mation that will lead police to whoever is tagging Oak Harbor buildings. He’s calling it “Rat on a Rat.”

Just last month, more than a dozen tags appeared over-night on several buildings and walls off Bayshore Drive. Buildings along Pioneer Way, Midway and structures at Fort Nugent Park were also recently tagged.

Business and property own-ers have expressed frustration at the cost of the graffiti.

“I’m right there with them,” Rennebohm said.

iarization with the compre-hensive plan that they may need sometime in the future.

“By going to an outside attorney, we won’t be able to develop the expertise we need in-house,” he said.

The commissioners said they weren’t trying to hide their plans from Banks and were surprised that he didn’t know about it. They said they want to work with someone

with legal expertise in a very specific area of law and ques-tion whether his staff has time to dedicate to the project.

Commissioner Jill Johnson said the deputy prosecutors are relatively inexperienced and have to be “generalists” by the nature of their work, and the commissioners want “a specialist.”

Plus, she said, Banks consistently told the com-missioners that his staff is “maxed out” and he can’t provide them with “strategic legal advice.”

“This isn’t about the pros-

ecutor’s ego,” she said. “This is about getting the best prod-uct for the citizens.”

Controversy over the issue of using an outside attorney for comprehensive planning goes back to the 1990s. A for-mer board of commissioners hired land-use attorney Keith Dearborn to help the county write its comprehensive plan as required by the Growth Management Act.

In 2000, the Superior Court judges forced the commissioners to stop using Dearborn as a land-use attor-ney when costs reached well

beyond $700,000; the com-missioners later hired him back as a planning consultant and paid him even more.

Banks said the product from the huge expense was “mixed at best,” with his office being left to “clean up the mess” when portions of the plan were appealed by Whidbey Environmental Action Network and others.

Litigation is continues to this day, he said.

WEAN spokesman Steve Erickson estimates about 70 percent of the challenges to the county’s comprehensive

plan were successful. In the recent process,

Banks said he hoped there would have been more com-munication.

The issue wasn’t on the agenda, but commissioners discussed their plans to con-tract with the outside attor-ney during a meeting last week.

Commissioners said they planned to talk about the scope of work for the attorney at a meeting on Tuesday, even though the issue again isn’t on the agenda, according to Budget Director Elaine Marlow.

At the same time, Banks said, the commissioners couldn’t squeeze him onto the agenda until next week.

“I hope to have a discussion with the entire board as soon as possible at a public meet-ing,” he said. “The public and the elected officials should know what’s going on.”

Banks said he couldn’t find anything in the budget about an outside attorney for the comprehensive plan update. The commissioners also haven’t asked for bids from outside attorneys; county code requires competitive bids for service contracts of over $25,000, but that com-missioners can waive that in a public session, he said.

In an email to Banks, Commissioner Helen Price Johnson said she is disap-pointed that he canceled two consecutive meetings with her to discuss the issue. She wrote that the planning director discussed the plans to hire an outside attorney with him.

“Upon receiving your memo on Friday, I again asked for some of your time today, but you have refused to speak with me either in person or on the phone,” she wrote. “I understand that you feel I should have reached out to you personally at an

earlier date. I can’t change the past but do hope we can step forward in a professional way to address our mutual goals.”

“It is not in the best inter-est of the county for this to be confrontational,” she added.

Price Johnson explained that the 2014 budget includes $75,000 in the Planning Department for “technical legal assistance” related to the update. The amount was rolled into a $1 million ear-mark in this year’s budget for the comprehensive plan update.

Marlow said commission-ers won’t know how much the legal counsel will cost until they determine the scope of work.

Ultimately, the commis-sioners and Banks disagree about whether his office can provide the necessary legal help in a timely manner.

Price Johnson argues that the prosecutor’s office “does not have such expertise in house.”

Banks countered that he has two attorneys with exper-tise in land use, but he asked for another paralegal to ease workflow and give the attor-neys the time to dedicate to the update.

Banks is scheduled to address the commissioners March 18.

Mary Arthur carefully looks over the cuts made by Dylan Crogan, then makes a point.

“Hold your knife straight,” she said. “If you’re cut-ting it right, it will cut right through.”

Crogan and his fellow advanced culinary students at Oak Harbor High School are practicing knife skills.

It’s something they’ll con-tinue to practice regularly in the coming weeks in prepara-tion for the National ProStart Invitational, April 18-20, at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Calif.

These are exciting times again for Oak Harbor’s culi-nary arts program, which is run by Arthur, the advisor.

Oak Harbor placed first at the Boyd’s Coffee ProStart Invitational Feb. 28 at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood to finish as the state’s top team in the culi-nary division.

Oak Harbor’s culinary team will join Stadium High School of Tacoma’s restau-rant management team as the only two teams from Washington headed to the national competition.

The victory for Oak Harbor set off a tearful cel-ebration for a program that barely missed last year, fin-

ishing second in both the culinary and management categories.

Oak Harbor’s manage-ment team finished fourth this year.

“Every year that we’ve won, the kids are excited, but I’ve never seen them this emotional,” said Arthur, who was also honored as the state’s culinary teacher of the year.

Even parents cried, Arthur said.

“I’ve never been to Disneyland, so I am very excited about that,” senior Lance Garon said. “By win-ning, I want to say it boosted my pride, but it also just made me feel really happy. There are not too many words to describe the pure joy I felt.”

Lance Garon is part of

the five-member culinary team bound for nationals, all seniors.

The team also includes Angela Cueto, Patrick Punch, Patrick Salgado and Crogan.

Judges scored teams on their cooking talents, knife skills, general appearance, food packaging and various other criteria to determine the winners at the state com-petition.

Oak Harbor’s restaurant management team finished

fourth.Arthur credited the dedi-

cation of the students and mentorship of Scott Fraser, owner of Frasers Gourmet Hideway and longtime advi-sor of Oak Harbor’s ProStart teams.

In Fraser’s past nine years as mentor, Oak Harbor has sent either a culinary or man-agement team to nationals seven times. He’s advised the ProStart teams for 14 years.

Culinary arts at Oak Harbor is a yearlong program that blocks out two classes each semester and offers college credit. Students also learn the business end by running Wildcat Catering, which serves many commu-nity and school events each year.

At the state competition, culinary students prepared an appetizer of Korean pork bone soup containing shrimp noodles and a slow poached egg; a main entree featur-ing lamb loin encrusted with pistachio and cranberry sau-sage; and a flocked white

chocolate peanut butter bar for dessert.

“I had fun with my team-mates,” Crogan said.

“We had really good com-munication.”

“After second place last year, it was a really uplifting feeling,” Punch said. “We all came together again.

“The judges even said we had amazing communication between us. Even the compe-tition itself was a huge bond-ing moment.”

With their achievement, Oak Harbor’s students earned more than $75,000 in scholarships toward culinary arts training and education, Arthur said.

Salgado and Punch are seriously exploring culinary arts programs.

n A fundraiser dinner featuring the three-course meal that will be prepared at nationals is 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at Frasers Gourmet Hideaway. Tickets, which are $65, may be pur-chased at the restaurant.

More than one martini was consumed Friday night — shaken, not stirred.

The James Bond-themed 2015 annual OHscars awards banquet, held at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge, honored chamber businesses and indi-viduals with member-voted awards in various categories.

“It was a fabulous party,” said Executive Director Christine Cribb. “The James Bond theme was amazing. The purpose is to celebrate the excellence of this com-munity.”

Chamber President Jason McFadyen said it was one of the most well-put-togeth-er chamber events he has attended.

“They had a Bond car in the building,” McFadyen said. “Everyone appeared to have a great time, and we were able to show our mem-bers how much we appreci-ate them with our member-voted OHscar awards. An event like this shows that the Greater Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce is a class-act organization with top-notch leadership from top to bottom.”

McFadyen walked away with two awards himself this year, Volunteer of the Year and Most Likely to Star as the Next James Bond.

Other winners were Frasers Gourmet Hideaway,

Quality Award; Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, John Platt Customer Service Award; Soroptomist International, Service Organization of the Year; New Leaf, Inc., Business Community Service Award; Lorna Guzman of Alaska USA Fedral Credit Union, Chamber Ambassador of the Year; Dave Crume of Sherwin Williams, Chamber Member of the Year; Big Brother Big Sister, Nonprofit Organization of the Year; Ron Newberry of the Whidbey News-Times, Journalist of the Year.

Whidbey Coffee won both Business of the Year and Employer of the Year.

“I’m honored,” said Whidbey Coffee owner Dan Ollis Tuesday. “It’s such a great honor to be recognized. It was really cool.”

Ollis said the key to the company’s success is “people doing great things.”

“We strive every day,” Ollis said.

Unlike previous years, “an unprecedented” $20,000 in Fourth of July sponsor-ship money was secured by January, allowing the OHscars to be more awards banquet than fundraiser, Cribb said.

“These sponsorships will provide the community with a historic display, the largest on the island,” Cribb said.

In response to the over-whelming support, the cham-ber is planning to add a New

Year’s Eve fireworks display at Windjammer Park, Cribb said.

This is the second year Whidbey Coffee has donated $6,000 as the grand sponsor for the Fourth of July event. The remaining $14,000 was donated by Navy Federal, Davis Amusement, Bob Severns, Jeff Pleet Edward Jones, Oak Harbor Tavern, the chamber board of direc-tors, Sherwin Williams, Kathy Jones, Greg Wasinger, 7-11, Tradewinds Insurance and the Magnificent Crab Queens.

Clear skies and national promotion brought record crowds into Coupeville over the weekend.

An estimated 6,000 people filled the streets Saturday and 3,000-4,000 Sunday, exceeding expec-tation, according to the event organizer.

“It is everything we have been working toward,” said organizer Cindy Olson.

Organizers sold out chowder tasting tickets by 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and by day’s end, groups were having to make sup-ply runs.

Penn Cove Shellfish alone cooked 1,300 pounds of mussels on Saturday, said Karen Jefferds, assistant general manager.

Jefferds said, in all, the company harvested 6,000 pounds of mussels for the event, including the additional 1,000 pounds it had to harvest Sunday morning.

Restaurants served up a total of 15,000 samples in the chowder competi-tion. Captain Whidbey Inn took home the win-ning entrant with its mus-sel and salmon chowder.

Two off-island competi-tors won the mussel eat-ing contest.

Matt Dunk from Port Alberni, British Columbia, won Saturday. Sara Sessions, a 2014 champion from Seattle, won Sunday.

ANSWERSAbout Memory Careand Alzheimer’s Disease“I Feel So Guilty”

When asked to describe the emo-tions associated with caring for a loved one with memory loss, the most com-mon response is: “I feel so guilty.”

Caregivers feel guilty for: things that happened in the past; the unusual behavior of their loved one; losing their temper; resenting the caregiving respon-sibilities; and so much more. Some of

these guilty feelings are small while oth-ers center around critical issues.

e trouble with guilt feelings is that, if left unaddressed, they can in-terfere with healthy, e ective decision making. Recognizing the guilt that surrounds caring for a loved one with memory loss can help keep it in per-spective, allowing the caregiver to be more objective in their daily interac-tions with their loved one. Here are some things you can do to help keep your guilt in perspective:• Recognize the feelings for what they are. When the source of guilty feelings are recognized they become manageable.• Identify how the feelings of guilt are a ecting your decision-making.• Don’t second guess the decisions that you make.• Don’t expect to be perfect. It is com-mon to feel resentful, angry and lonely at times. Accept these feelings as normal and don’t feel guilty.• Seek help from professionals and sup-port groups. You need outside support and guidance to keep perspective.

Above all remember, you are doing the very best job that you can. Give yourself credit for all that you do.

nosed with autism within his first year and received help through the state-funded Toddler Learning Center.

Catching the symptoms early and beginning therapy in the first three years is key.

“Seventy-five percent of the brain is developed in the first three years,” said Rene Denman, executive director of the Toddler Learning Center.

“The more you can work with them in the first three years, the better.”

When physical testing yielded nothing wrong with Liam initially, doctors fol-lowed up with some sensory testing at six months and the Stuarts were encouraged to seek developmental therapy.

“That was a scary call to make,” Stuart said.

When Liam finally got his diagnosis, it was a turning point for the Stuarts.

“When we got the diag-nosis it was a relief for us,” Stuart said. “It put us on the path to getting the therapy he needed.”

Stuart’s husband, Rob, went on deployment five months after Liam was born but was home in time to take Liam for a swallow study, for which the boy had to be restrained.

“That was probably the most heartbreaking thing I’ve had to do with him,” Rob Stuart said. “He was scream-ing and crying, and I was trying not to cry.”

Because the “wires were crossed in his brain” instinc-tual infant behaviors were dif-ficult, Stuart said. Swallowing

became gagging, attempting to grasp caused his hands to spread out, sitting became laying rigid.

Starting with feeding, the Stuarts learned how to retrain their son through sensory exercises. Once swallowing was down, they moved on to other develop-mental problems like sitting, crawling and grasping.

“As an outside person, you wonder, ‘Is this really going to do anything?’ ” Stuart said.

But the therapy did yield results over time.

“Every time we addressed his sensory needs, he would go from doing nothing to excelling,” Stuart said. “What’s great about TLC is they come into your home and teach you the techniques you can use when they aren’t around.”

With her husband fre-quently on deployment, Stuart has had to shoulder a lot of the parenting burden in his absence.

“It’s been really hard on her,” Rob Stuart said.

Stuart said she had a breakdown at around six weeks after his birth, out of frustration.

“It’s hard when you don’t understand your child,” Stuart said. “He was incon-solable. Thank goodness Rob is so supportive.”

“He didn’t sleep a lot, which meant we didn’t sleep a lot,” Rob Stuart said. “It was crazy.”

Now at three years old, Liam can eat — and does eat — just about anything and behaves largely like a typical child. Originally diagnosed as nonverbal, Liam is now speaking at the level of a 4- to 5-year-old.

Academically, Liam doesn’t qualify for special education because he tested too high and will be going to a com-munity preschool.

Despite his progress, Liam still struggles with emo-tional and social situations. Meltdowns still occur, but the Stuarts have learned to avoid triggers when possible.

“Autism doesn’t go away,” Stuart said. “It’s not some-thing that you grow out of.”

However, people with autism can learn coping skills to help them be as typical as possible.

Stuart uses her experi-ence to help advocate for early childhood programs like the Toddler Learning Center through the State Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities and their Families. Stuart was in Olympia just last week meeting with legislators and their staff to advocate for

funding for programs like the Toddler Learning Center.

“I think it made the big-gest difference,” Stuart said. “I don’t think he’d be doing as well had we not caught it early. If he was diagnosed later, it would be totally dif-ferent.”

Denman said the Toddler Learning Center, which has been around for 30 years, typically serves around 75 children in Island County with a variety of developmen-tal issues. Families can be referred by their doctor or self-refer if they have con-cerns.

The center screened 338 children in the county last year.

“Our hope is that parents know their rights, know about their child’s developmental needs and they feel they have the skill set to help their child grow,” Denman said.

address the challenges fac-ing us in a dynamic health-care environment,” Forbes said. “Thank you for allow-ing us the opportunity to be a member of the Whidbey Island community.”

President Anne Tarrant defended the board’s deci-sion to pay Forbes a base of $279,000 per year with an additional $70,000 in annual bonuses, if board objectives are met.

Tomasino earned $261,000 in salary and ben-efits last year.

“When we chose the sal-ary, we looked at all the metrics,” Tarrant said. “I think that what we decided is appropriate.”

Last month, the Whidbey News-Times reported that the average base salary for lead executives in criti-cal access hospitals in the state is $169,638 according to most recent reports, and the average for the five criti-cal access hospitals in Island and surrounding counties was $202,919.

Whidbey General should be compared to other, larg-er critical access systems

or hospital districts because of the quantity and breadth of the services offered by the public hospital, Tarrant said.

Additionally, she said, “a number” of hospital staff met with the three candidates, and the board decided that, after speaking with them “at length,” that Forbes was the best choice, Tarrant said.

Tarrant said that she and hospital district board mem-ber Ron Wallin “highly rec-ommended” Forbes for the position.

Tomasino, whose role as CEO ends on April 20, origi-nally planned to leave next October.

The board expressed its intention to retain Tomasino as a paid consultant to help with the leadership transi-tion.

“It’s been a process,” Tarrant said. “I know it’s been kind of awkward.”

“A little bit,” Tomasino agreed.

Starting in 2001 as infor-mation systems director, Tomasino has worked his way up the ranks to the chief operating officer posi-tion. He served as interim CEO several months prior to assuming the role perma-nently in July 2009.

County code

Tell commissioners animal noises disturbEditor,

For the past three years, my neigh-bor has raised chickens, including a rooster. A rooster can crow up to three different times a day or night, waking me up. One crow, which is extremely rare, and I can usually return to sleep.

After several minutes, I’m wide awake, unable to return to sleep.

Over the past six months, I have been woken up at least four to five times a week.

As recently as last year, our (neigh-borhood) association rewrote the cov-enants and restrictions so there are no restrictions on chickens and roost-ers, since “the county does not restrict them.”

In 1998, the county code made it unlawful for any person to cause, or for any person in possession of property to allow to originate from the property, sound, including animal noises, that unreasonably disturbs or interferes with the peace, comfort and repose of property owners.

Due to (this rooster) being a public

disturbance that unreasonably inter-feres with the peace, comfort and repose of property owners, and the crowing has resulted in frequent, repet-itive or continuous noise, and, finally, it is a repeated violator, it should be impounded and/or the property owner fined.

I am urging you to email your district commissioner if you are also experienc-ing this frustration, especially during this time as workshops are being held to update the current county codes.

Noise

Newkirk’s family was here before the NavyEditor,

This is in response to an online com-ment made in response the Whidbey News-Times Jan. 31 article, “Whidbey area leaders discuss new squadrons, jet noise.”

In his comment, Brad Willey tells anti-noise commenter Garrett Newkirk, “Move if you don’t like it.”

One hundred and six years ago, in 1909, when Garrett’s great-grandpar-ents purchased land at Oak Harbor on

Whidbey Island, could anyone have considered there would be a military reservation on Whidbey, only acces-sible by water?

No bridge, only a ferry close to your home, perfect place to raise a family earning a living off the land through self-sufficiency.

Dugualla Bay dike was successful-ly completed in 1918. Roosevelt built Deception Pass Bridge in 1935.

Seventy-four years ago, in 1941, the Navy located a military reservation on Whidbey. Waterfront was taken for military recreation; another family farm was taken to provide a stable for the military; many productive farms of the community were taken with slow and little compensation. All of Maylor’s Point was traded for a modest home in the city.

The close-knit community was shat-tered, becoming refugees, some near retirement, hoping to retire on their land, had to seek another income. Military families moved into seized civilian homes. Wetlands of the reser-vation were paved for Ault Field run-ways, burying dreams and never to be used again for farms.

Before paved wetlands, water would seep into the soil. The Navy’s paving of this land created runoff to Dugualla Bay. Aircraft were propeller planes. The

Optimism growing asrecession fades away

During the past several weeks, I’ve had some interesting and enlightening conversations with a few key people in the commu-nity, both on North and Central Whidbey.

There seems to be a common thread — a belief, really — that things are getting better every day.

Real estate sales are on the rise on Whidbey Island and retail businesses in our com-munity are reporting sales that range from respect-able to strong.

This past weekend’s Musselfest in downtown Coupeville kicked off the tourist season with a big bang. It’s estimated that at least 6,000 people flooded into the town of about 1,850. For the first time, town police had to direct traffic.

Even with all of the encouraging signs, it seems to all boil down to a feeling, and things are feeling pretty good right now.

People are feeling good. People are expressing optimism.

The economic woes that we’ve been enduring for years now seem to be burning away like the hazy morning mist wafting over this island’s vistas.

Recent conversations about the disappearing clouds have been predicated with a certain cautious-ness. There have been glimmers of hope before that seemed to evaporate. Nobody wants to jinx it.

During the deepest pit of the recession, there seemed to be a negative, divisive element that picked away at local morale by capitalizing on the feeling of exhaustion over the economic slump.

Finger pointing and name calling became accept-able in online forums. No proposed solutions offered, just attacks and blame.

I like to believe that people have grown tired of that mudslinging and the wallowing in absurd nega-tivity.

An important part of turning around an economy lies in our attitudes and beliefs. The we-can-do-it attitude is taking root, and there is a growing feeling that great times are imminent.

I feel it too. It’s like electricity in the air, and it’s exciting.

Brighter times are ahead, and it’s up to each of us to build on the growing optimism to keep our com-munity headed in the right direction.

LOOKING BACK: 125 YEARS‘Laundry editor’ gets a hot tip from a friend

100 years ago n A lady friend advised the Oak Harbor

News laundry department editor that a dripping pan placed over the irons keeps them hot without so much fire. Try it.

n H. Riksen received a fine new top buggy on Monday.

n The new board of directors of the Oak Harbor Fruit Growers Association was set to hold their first meeting. They requested that as many stockholders as possible be present, as matters of vital important would be discussed and acted upon.

75 years agon Caesar Tesch was nursing a broke

rib and painful bruises, suffered when he was pinned under a 1 1/2-ton stump at the Lewis Ogden place. He was freed by Mrs. Lewis Ogden and Edgar Ogden, who, in desperation, summoned enough strength to move the stump.

n Loss was estimated at about $25,000 when the eight-room residence of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Clarke of Greenbank burned to

the ground. Mrs. Clarke, who was alone in the house at the time of the blaze, man-aged to escape with only a few household articles. Cause of the blaze was undeter-mined. The house was considered one of the show places of Whidby Island when it was built about seven years prior.

50 years agon Mayor R.O. “Graybeard” Ellis

stopped at the barbershop to see if his beard needed a trim yet. Barber Tom Cleveland measured the growth with a yardstick and decided that the mayor should come back at a later date. The beard was being grown for the beard contest the Jaycees were sponsoring to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of Oak Harbor.

n Two young men having a little fun gave several public officials a scare by climbing on the girders of the Deception Pass Bridge. Both men, 21 years old and part of VP-17, were charged with creating a public nuisance.

n Burglars broke into Freeland Pharmacy, ripped open the safe and stole

more than $2,000 and all the “hard” nar-cotics that were in the safe. The thieves broke into the store by ripping out part of the air-conditioning unit on the roof and dropping to the floor some 15 feet below.

25 years agon A proposal was brought up to build

a 185-foot cellular communication tower in Oak Harbor. The main purpose was to bring cellular phone capability to Island County.

n A home at Brighton Beach in Old Clinton was demolished Friday, March 9, by a landslide. Much of the lower half of the house was buried in mud, and the upper story ended up in the cold water of Saratoga Passage. In the area where the slide occurred, only a few feet of space separated the houses from the bluff.

n Looking Back is compiled from the Whidbey News-Times’ archives as the newspaper celebrates 125 years in business and the City of Oak Harbor its 100th anniversary of incorporation.

MORE LETTERS TO THE EDITORdrone was tolerable. Old-timers miss the PBYs.

NAS Whidbey was expected to close at the end of the war.

Sixty years ago, in 1955, during the Korean War, there were eight squad-rons that were moved to other mili-tary reservations. The first jets, A-3D Skywarriors, arrived in 1957, 48 years after Garrett’s grandparents.

Forty-five years ago, in the 1970s, 16 A-6 squadrons were at Whidbey

with louder noise — not as intrusive as EA-18G with more flights and higher level of noise.

Thirty-five years ago, in the 1980s, an agreement made between the Navy and the group Whidbey Islanders for a Sound Environment, or WISE, restrict-ing Prowler flights to no later than 10:30 p.m. and no more than two days in a row, and with no flights on week-ends. Prowlers were first announced as replacements for the EA-18G in 2007.

Longtime chair of St. Patrick’s Day event is swept off his feet By RON NEWBERRYStaff reporter

Dutch Strehle can already hear the laughs.

For nearly a quarter of a century, he’s remained low-key as the figure behind one of Oak Harbor’s most color-ful parades.

But when the St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, in downtown, Strehle will take center stage, serving as grand marshal while wav-ing to spectators from the comforts of a Volkswagen convertible.

And that makes Heinz “Dutch” Strehle, who is nei-ther Dutch nor Irish, a little uneasy.

“I was fighting it,” Strehle said. “I didn’t really want it because I’m not Irish, but I guess I have to be honored.

“I was hoping that none of my friends stand out there and die laughing when I come down as grand mar-shal in an Irish parade being German and everything.”

Anyone associated with the Irish Wildlife Society, which organizes the parade each year, will tell you that Strehle’s honor couldn’t be more fitting.

For the past 24 years, he’s served as the parade’s chairman, which involved soliciting participation, lining up entries and even building floats.

He decided after last year’s event he wouldn’t serve in that role for year No. 25.

“I said, ‘It’s time for new blood,’ ” Strehle said.

Little did he know back then how important that decision would be.

He didn’t know then how much his own life would change over the next several months.

In November, Strehle was formally introduced to Donna Haines at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club, and nei-ther of their lives have been the same since.

Both had lost their long-time spouses to cancer three years earlier and never expected they would fall in

love again. But both were wrong. On March 7, the two

exchanged wedding vows at Strehle’s Oak Harbor home.

“I never thought this would happen,” Donna said. “We fell in love. It’s the most wonderful thing. This is just amazing at our age.”

“I already made up my mind I was probably going to end up in a retirement home somewhere once I can’t han-dle things anymore, which I still can,” said Dutch, who’s

73. “I basically never thought this would happen again.”

The stars didn’t entirely align entirely on their own, however.

The Strehles admit that a little match-making was orchestrated by Rhonda Severns, Donna’s daughter who lives down the street from Dutch along with her husband, Oak Harbor Councilman Bob Severns.

Rhonda Severns pointed Dutch out to her mother at the Oak Harbor Music Festival and, ultimately, talked them into having din-ner together.

Dutch also had noticed Donna’s presence in the neighborhood since return-ing to Oak Harbor follow-ing an extended visit to Henderson, Nev.

“Rhonda kept things spin-ning,” Dutch said with a smile.

“She would not stop,” Donna said with a laugh.

Both said they are grateful that she didn’t.

They also agree it was probably a good thing that

Dutch didn’t tackle the St. Patrick’s Day parade this month.

“He had a real conflict of interest,” this year’s parade chairman, Mike Thelen, said jokingly.

Strehle became involved with the Oak Harbors St. Patrick’s Day parade because his former wife, Roby McGee, was affiliated with the Irish Wildlife Society.

Born near Stuttgart, Germany, Strehle giggled about his place with the club. But his role organizing the parade was no laughing mat-ter for the retired Marine Corps sergeant who got the nickname “Dutch” while serving three combat tours in Vietnam.

“He’s really been the anchor of the group,” Thelen said. “He’s really good with all the details.”

When the Irish Wildlife Society met in January, there was discussion on whether the parade would continue since it needed to find a new chairman.

“Reluctantly, my hand

went up,” Thelen said.Strehle’s hand will go up

several times on St. Patrick’s Day while he waves to spectators. His wife will be alongside him, as will their labradoodle, Mattie.

Those who know the cou-ple say the two have acted like kids since they met.

Donna also is a longtime Oak Harbor resident and business owner. She and her late husband, Ron Haines, used to own Haines Chevron and other businesses.

“Neither one of them was looking for a partner,” Rhonda Severns said of her mother and Dutch. “They just hit it off and fell in love.

“To see her so happy and to know that she could fall in love again, it’s really great for both of them.”

Nearly 30 friends and fam-ily gathered for the wedding ceremony that was held in the Strehle home on Pioneer Way at sunset.

“It was wonderful,” Rhonda Severns said.

“There were a lot of tears for me. Happy tears.”

GAME OF THE WEEK Spring season starts for OHHS when the soccer team hosts Anacortes at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 14.SPORTS

WHIDBEY

By JIM WALLERSports editor

As winter fades away and the weather improves, Oak Harbor and Coupeville high school athletes begin their journey to spring-season suc-cess on the fields, courts and tracks of Whidbey Island.

Following are previews of the Wildcats’ and Wolves’ baseball, softball and soc-cer teams. The other spring squads will be featured in the next edition of the Whidbey News-Times, Saturday, March 14.

OH Baseball Improved hitting key to Wildcat success

To improve upon last year’s five-win season, the Oak Harbor High School baseball team’s offense will have to stop mirroring the

Seattle Mariners’.The Wildcats scored two

or fewer runs in 14 of its 20 games last year.

Also like the Mariners, Oak Harbor often wasted strong pitching performanc-es. Taking out the two games when it gave up 10 runs, Oak Harbor surrendered only 3.3 runs per game.

“We pitched well enough to win more games, we just didn’t hit at all,” coach Tyson VanDam said. “We have made it a big focus this year to get more physical and more aggressive at the plate. That is the key to us making a push this spring.”

Based on early results, the offense is heading in the right direction. A high-scor-ing scrimmage Saturday con-cluded the “best first week of practice we have had in five years,” VanDam said.

With a strong core of

returning players, a good group of newcomers and an improved offense, VanDam said he expects his club “to make a run at the one seed.”

Returning are seniors Brent Mertins (shortstop), Danny Wolfe (pitcher/catch-er) and Carl Meders (third base) and juniors Kevyn Johnson (second base), Tyler Snavely (pitcher/out-field) and Quentin Tungate (outfield).

Mertins and Wolfe were first-team and Johnson sec-ond-team all-conference in 2014.

The veterans will be com-plemented by a “very strong group of young players,” VanDam said.

Freshman Chris Trisler and sophomore Taylor Consford will fight for playing time as catchers, according to VanDam.

Sophomores Trent Benson and Steven Richards and juniors Preston Rankin and Avery Aguirre should provide infield depth.

Sophomore Dylan Bailey and juniors Robert Herring and Sean Erskine are in the battle for starting outfield spots.

“Our infield will be one of our best in years,” VanDam said, “and we have good depth there as well.

“We have two or three returning arms on the mound, but we will need one of the young guys to step it up and solidify the starting rotation.”

Oak Harbor will play in a jamboree at South Whidbey at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14.

The first two games are at home. Mount Vernon visits at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 19, followed by Mariner at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 24.

CV Baseball Wolves eye another trip to state playoffs

The Coupeville High School baseball team is com-ing off one of its most suc-cessful seasons ever, and the club’s aim is to match that effort this year, according to coach Willie Smith.

The Wolves advanced to

the state tournament last year where it lost a 2-1 heart-breaker in the first round.

“My goals are very similar to last year: we want to get in the playoffs, get to the state tourney and win some games there,” Smith said. “As suc-cessful as we were last year, the last game still stings for me, and the boys are feel-ing confident in their ability to get back and move along further.”

Graduation robbed the Wolves of five starters, including league MVP Ben Etzell; however, five letter winners return.

“We did lose a lot from last year, but we also built a strong foundation for our pro-gram, and there is a strong core returning from last

year,” Smith said. “If we can continue to grow and build, then I truly believe we can get back to the tourney.

“We will have to stay injury free and our young guys will need to step up; but unlike past years when we’ve lost such a strong group, our young guys won’t need to carry the team, they will just need to complement our team and stay within them-selves.”

Returning players include seniors Aaron Curtin (pitch-er/infield), Aaron Trumbull (pitcher/first base) and Josh Bayne (shortstop) and juniors Cole Payne (catcher) and C.J. Smith (pitcher/infield).

Bayne and Trumbull were second-team, all-league

choices last year; C.J. Smith was honorable mention.

Key newcomers are senior Kyle Bodamer (outfield/infield), sophomore Clay Reilly (outfield) and fresh-man Hunter Smith (outfield/pitcher).

The mound staff should be solid with starters Curtin, C.J. Smith and Trumbull back, as should the infield with Curtin at third, Trumbull at first and Bayne and C.J. Smith in the middle.

Coach Smith expects the top of the batting order to be strong, and he likes his team’s speed. Though the Wolves don’t have any “big boppers,” they should be able to produce runs.

“I’ve been very impressed with the work ethic and hus-tle of our kids so far,” Smith said. “The older guys are doing an amazing job with the young guys, coaching and encouraging them, and the young guys have been very receptive.

“(I’m) very excited about the new league, our non-league schedule and the prospects of our season.”

The Wolves begin the season with two home, non-league games. Blaine visits at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, and then Sultan comes to town at 4 p.m. Monday, March 16.

OH Softball Young, veteran core returns to lead ’Cats

Although the Oak Harbor High School softball team is young, it still has a handful of veteran players.

Eight letter winners are back, and none are seniors.

Leading the way are four two-year letter win-ners: juniors Alexa Findley (catcher/shortstop), Kelly Findley (second base/out-field), Tricia Sarns (pitcher/third base) and Kat Martinez (pitcher/infield).

Also back are juniors Laura Anderson (outfield) and Taylor Heidt (outfield/first base) and sophomores Shea Davis (outfield/first base) and Sydney White

earned second-team, all-league honors and won the team’s Most Valuable Player awards in 2014. Martinez, Kelly Findley, Anderson and White were all-league honor-able mention.

Coach Todd Showalter isn’t sure which newcomers will fill out the lineup, but he is pleased with the growth of last season’s junior varsity players. Many, like most of the returnees, played on club teams during the summer.

“A couple have come a long ways,” he said. “Some played year-round.”

He is also impressed with the five freshmen on the team.

“All the freshmen that turned out made the team,” he said. “They are strong enough that they would have made it any year.”

The Wildcats won only two games last year, but with the experienced team returning, Showalter “expects to be in the playoff hunt.”

“Everyone else in the league graduated more than we did, and some have to rebuild,” he said. “We have more experience.”

Oak Harbor will play in a jamboree at Marysville-Pilchuck High School at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14.

The first game is 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, when Mount Vernon comes to Whidbey Island.

CV Softball Wolves hope to build upon success of 2014

Last year, for only the sec-ond time in school history, the Coupeville softball team qualified for the state tourna-ment. The Wolves are aiming to make it a more frequent occurrence.

“As a team, our goal is to go to state playoffs again this season,” coach Deanna Rafferty said. “All the girls have a strong desire to win, and, as a coach, I expect noth-ing less.”

A pair of three-year start-ers will form the nucleus of this year’s team.

Senior McKayla Bailey, coming off shoulder surgery, will return to the circle for the Wolves, and senior Hailey Hammer is back to anchor a solid batting order.

“Our batting is, without a doubt, our strength this year,” Rafferty said.

Hammer was second-team, all-Cascade Conference and Bailey honorable mention in 2014.

Joining Bailey and

Hammer in the lineup are returning letter winners senior Monica Vidoni (out-field/first base) and sopho-mores Tiffany Briscoe (left field) and Jae LeVine (second base).

A strong freshman class, which helped the Central Whidbey Little League junior team qualify for the state tournament last summer, will help fill in the holes.

The ninth-graders are led by Katrina McGranahan, Kyla Briscoe, Hope Lodell and Heather Nastali.

McGranahan will join the starting rotation, and Kyla Briscoe will add pitching depth.

Rose will start at catcher.“She may be new to the

position, but she is already showing great promise,” Rafferty said.

Lodell will play centerfield and help out behind the plate, and Nastali will hold down an outfield spot.

A pair of sophomores, Robin Cedillo and Jasmine Melena, are also in the run-ning to start in the outfield.

“My underclassmen are a big portion of the team, and I think that’s great,” Rafferty said. “The upperclassmen are working well with the young girls and helping train them and vetting them for future seasons. All of these girls show great promise, and I foresee having a state-wor-thy team for the next couple years.”

Rafferty is in her first year, replacing co-coaches David and Amy King.

“The girls are handling the change well,” she said. “We are slowly finding our groove as a team and trying to meld my coaching techniques with

their playing preferences.” The Wolves, 8-20 last year,

entertain Sultan at 4 p.m. Monday, March 16, in the season opener.

OH Soccer Wildcats hope to shake injury jinx

The Oak Harbor High School soccer season got off to an ominous start last week.

Austin Moncada, a strong candidate to start in goal for the Wildcats, broke his leg the second day of tryouts and will miss the season.

Injuries derailed a promis-ing season last year when 14 players, including nine starters, missed at least one match. Oak Harbor, which finished 6-11-1, went into the season with high hopes, com-ing off its first playoff appear-ance since 2002 and return-ing most of its starting lineup.

Much of that lineup (including five first-team, all-league players) is now gone through graduation, but coach Brian Thompson does return nine lettermen.

“Our strength will be the returners,” Thompson said.

That group includes only two seniors, midfielders Dakota Powers and Taylor Yancy.

Also back are juniors Alex Waner (forward) and Kyle Truex (defender) and five sophomores: J.J. Mitchell (midfielder), Andrew Franssen (midfielder), Kegan Snell (forward), Seth Gluth (defender) and Kurtis Zylstra (midfielder).

One of the new players expected to help is senior keeper Jeremy Vester.

“It will be hard to fill the void left by the seniors,”

Thompson said. “I think with a lot of work and dedication, it will happen in the next year or two.

“We have good players, but they will have to step up the pace to play at the level we would like to attain.”

Thompson said his big-gest concern is starting a new defensive line and goal-keeper.

The coaching staff’s goal, Thompson said, is for the Wildcats to finish in the top four of the Wesco North and return to the playoffs.

Oak Harbor plays in one of the state’s strongest soccer conferences, and to be more consistently competitive, it needs to develop a deeper feeder program, starting with a middle school team, accord-ing to Thompson.

“This would be a great transition between the rec teams and the Islander teams that travel.”

The Islander program is a “tremendous” help, Thompson said, but Oak Harbor needs to get more players involved in the club system.

Oak Harbor kicks off the season with Anacortes at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

CV Soccer Wolves have reasons to be optimistic

Several factors point to a successful season for the Coupeville High School soc-cer team.

First, the Wolves return a bevy of lettermen: seniors Colin Belliveau, Josh Datin, Ryan Freeman, Keegan Korteum, Oscar Liquidano, Joel Walstad and Aaron Wright; juniors Zane Bundy, Tanner Kircher, Abraham Leyva Elenes, Connor McCormick and Loren

Nelson; and sophomore Uriel Liquidano.

Leyva Elenes, who led the team in scoring last year, was second-team, all-conference in 2014.

Key newcomers, accord-ing to coach Kyle Nelson, are juniors Garrett Compton and Cody Menges and freshman William Nelson.

“We have many returning players with varsity experi-ence,” coach Nelson said. “We will be building from where we were last year.”

Second, Coupeville will play in the 1A Olympic League this season and not the Cascade Conference, which includes 2A schools.

“I think, in general, we will be able to compete a little bet-ter,” Nelson said. “The level of play between the teams should be more even, mean-ing probably more close, exciting games this year.”

Third, Nelson, in his sec-ond year, has a better under-

standing of what he would like to achieve as the pro-gram’s head coach.

“Just having a year’s worth of experience helps,” he said. “I am starting the year better prepared and with a more complete vision of what I want us to accomplish.”

The positives make quali-fying for the playoffs a rea-sonable goal, Nelson said. “I fully expect to have some postseason play this year.

“With the way the District 3 tournament is set, I believe we will have a good opportu-nity for some success.”

The Wolves, who were 5-10-2 in 2014, will host South Whidbey and Lake Stevens in a jamboree at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14.

The first match is at 5:15 p.m. at Sequim Tuesday, March 17, and the home opener is at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19, with South Whidbey.
