Members: WOW! It’s March already! I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for the Season to
begin. It’s right around the corner now! Opening day is Saturday, May 2nd
(It’s always the
first Saturday in May). See the flyer in this edi%on for ge&ng your ad in the Booklet this
year and for tenta%ve Opening Day schedule. Proceeds from the Booklet help defray the
cost of the opening day fes%vi%es. It is also the one of the two %mes a year that you can
adver%se your business to other club members. The other way is to post an ad on the bul-
le%n board outside the restrooms at the club. One of the best events at our club happened last night. It was the Murder Mystery di-
rected by Jusne Roecker. As always, it was sold out! It was truly hilarious. Chef Ernie
and his staff out did themselves. The food and service were outstanding! See the pictures
in this edi%on to see what a great event this was. This month, look forward to the Three Sheets to the Wind Rainguer Regaa! This year
this event is being organized by the Junior Sailing Parents to benefit Junior Sailing. Please
bring your family and friends to enjoy this fun, family friendly evening. Several flyers have
come out recently. Look for more updates and announcements in your email and a flyer in
this edi%on. Vice Commodore Bob Gamble’s commi5ee has been working hard to get the Sailing Camp
organized for this season. MUCH progress has been made. Online registra%on opened to-
day! Please get your children or grandchildren signed up quickly. Spots go fast. See Bob’s
ar%cle in this edi%on for more details. We have had 2 changes to the board recently. Mike Wagner has stepped down from the
BOG to focus his a5en%on on the Jr Racing Commi5ee. Jeff Ronald has graciously accept-
ed the Sail Program Chair Posi%on. Look for his interview in the April Waterline. R/C Tim Weidman has decided, for personal reasons, to step down as our Rear Commo-
dore. I want to thank Tim for all his hard work as Fleet Captain and for his accomplish-
ments as our Rear Commodore with highly successful birthday nights and a completed cal-
endar. F/C Paul Miller has moved up to the Rear Commodore Posi%on and will be se-
lec%ng an Assistant Fleet Captain shortly. Since Paul had already completed his cruise
schedule, the Assistant Fleet will carry out his plan. We will be recrui%ng a new Fleet Cap-
tain for the 2016 season, so if you are interested or know someone who would be, please
contact IPC Rick Hanson with your sugges%ons at [email protected]. The list of
board members and their contacts is below.

Kyle Hanson, our new Keelboat Race Chair has scheduled a UK sailing seminar on March
7th. If you plan to a5end please let me know ASAP! He already has 40 par%cipants so reser-
va%ons are %ght! (See the included flyer for more informa%on) You can contact Kyle at:
A $50 Capital/Maintenance Fee was established at the Annual General Mee%ng in October.
This fee can be offset by credits for volunteerism at work days or by working on specific club
needs such as webmaster. This fee will be invoiced in July. Since this is a new program, quali-
fying ac%vi%es are s%ll being set. If you have already contributed by working on work day or
in some other way you believe should count toward this fee, please contact IPC Rick Hanson
to document your eligibility. Hope to see you around the club! Suzanne Braun Commodore

Waterline Ar6cle – Bob Gamble, V/C
Hello Members –
I have a confession to make, I am officially 6red of winter and I am now coun6ng down the days to our boa6ng season. Open-
ing Day is just 9 weeks away and I wake up each morning hoping the temperatures are warmer and the sun shines longer so I
can think about making headway on boat prepara6ons for the upcoming season. We do have a new member to our boa6ng
fleet, a 16 foot Bryant powerboat that we are currently performing a full makeover on in our garage. I suspect Vivian may have
goen a winter boat picture to share.
Since our Change of Watch in November I have been your Vice Commodore for 4 months now and true to business repor6ng I
would like to provide a summary of noteworthy items that have been worked on over the past quarter while the Holidays and
the winter doldrums have passed.
While hard to believe our 85th
Commodore’s Ball was just 4 months ago where we had 91 guests aending from our mem-
bership and from 7 visi6ng clubs. Pictures of this event can be found at https://www.flickr.com/photos/107596229@N08/sets/72157649095915822/
Our club insurance has been reviewed with our insurance provider, John Doetzer, CEO of CIC Insurance, and we have up-
dated our policies so your club is adequately covered in the event of a catastrophic event. Worthy of no6ng is that our
docks are covered at a replacement cost of $1.7 million, we have over $75k of sailboat and powerboat assets and our
property consis6ng of our club house, 2 rental proper6es and dockage is valued at over $4.2m.
Our rela6onship with the University of Delaware Sailing team con6nues with a new group of UofD officers taking the helm
(see the new officer slate below). Worthy to note is that we are working in partnership with UofD Sailing on plans to
replace the floa6ng docks located at “B” dock with something more prac6cal and upscale. Designs and permits are in
process. This will allow the UofD Sailing team to u6lize a more effec6ve infrastructure to carry out sailing events at
our club and also will support NERYC’s Junior Sail and Learn to Sail program with needed space to operate from
Our rela6onship with the Coast Guard Auxiliary con6nues where they make a home at NERYC to conduct their monthly
mee6ngs. We are pleased to make available our facility and help promote and support their volunteer ac6vi6es on the
northern Chesapeake Bay.
Several Members helped out during our workday in January to knock out some small projects and ‘spiff’ up the club with
fresh paint. Walls were repaired, lots of pain6ng was done, doors were fixed, plumbing fixed, and the basement was
cleaned out and organized.
A Junior Sail Commiee was setup with the goal to establish a sustainable model for the club to operate under that does
not rely upon full 6me volunteers to carry out the work across the Learn to Sail and Junior Sail Program. Over the past
several weeks the commiee has met weekly and has made excellent progress collabora6ng as a team to organize the
work, iden6fy and own tasks necessary be executed and has opened registra6on to the public on February 26th
.
The commiee is made up of members Mary Schorse, Julie Coage, Sharlene Wilkins, Chris Ronald, Jeff Ronald,
Dave Brzezowski, Rick Hanson, Paul Miller, Susanne Braun, and myself. And the leadership in each area is
broken out as follows:
Interview Team – Jeff Ronald (Junior Sail Chair) with assistance from Mary Schorse and Julie Coage
Registra6on Process: Mary Schorse with assistance from Julie Coage and Tina Web
Fleet Maintenance/Prepara6on, Engines and Dinghy’s: Dave Brzezowski with assistance from several
volunteer members
Comar Regula6ons – Paul Miller with assistance from Chris Ronald and Jus6ne Roecker
Website Content Updates – Julie Coage with assistance from Bob Molloy
Other members who are helping across various areas include Kyle Hanson, Rick Hanson, Tina Webb, Judy Murray
and Greg Shriver. You will find details of ac6vi6es and accomplishments of this commiee and extended vol-
unteers in in my BOG Vice Commodore Reports.
So it has been a busy 4 months from the Vice Commodore perspec6ve. You will undoubtedly see from other reports and ar6-
cles that there are a lot of ac6vi6es going on at NERYC and we are well posi6oned to open our 2015 Season.
Looking forward and in prepara6on for Opening day, we have a workday on April 18th. However, I will be organizing special
work events in March to specifically cover a couple of big 6cket items that require aen6on below:
12
Remove Carpet from Office Area and replace with new carpet - volunteer
Update Bathroom near Boardroom to make into a Bride usable / repair wall, paint, drape backdrop or take 6le off and paint
– volunteer/contract plumber
Kitchen sink faucet replacements (3x) - resolve why water is not flowing to back right sink.
Evaluate inoperable wash sink in kitchen dishwashing area (faucet) and possibly rebuild the faucet from the bar to use here
or determine if current faucet is repairable volunteer / contract plumber
Remove old washer from the basement assessable thru the burgee lounge – volunteer
Patched drywall in hall by Chef’s office needs to be painted - volunteer
Gain access to aQc and evaluate exhaust fan and AC unit in upper part of club – volunteer/contract ac person
Please contact me directly if you can assist with any of the above items. Stay tuned for a date.
It is no secret that the core of our club’s success comes from the many volunteers who work together and contribute 6me, ener-
gy and talent. Thanks for your connued support in all that we do.
May we have fair winds, inexpensive fuel and a winter that ends soon.
Happy Boa6ng!
Bob Gamble

The clubs nominang commi ee is starng to ramp up their
Board of Governors recruitment process. While is it is a li le
early to know exactly what posions will become available we
know we will have a few posions that need filling. The 2015
nominang commi ee members are Rick Hanson, Darlene
Hamlin, George Braun, Brian Fuchs and Viv Molloy. If you
might have an interest please reach out to anyone of us or any
Board member for more informaon. We would be happy to
talk to you about the various posions and the responsibilies
of being a board member. For anyone that thinks it might be
too big of a commitment please don’t let that get in the way of
asking a few quesons. The Board has found that if we work
together as a team the posions become manageable.

Along the NERYC Docks & Moorings………………..
Well, I do not know about all of you but I’ve had enough of winter and the cold weather. There was a 6me when I was younger
I actually looked forward to winter and the crisp cold air and accompanying snow but now that I have a boat I am wai6ng for
the spring thaw and I say enough is enough!! I am looking forward to images such as this view from Sand Island towards Fishing
Baery Island I took last spring:
If you haven’t started thinking about geQng your boat ready for launch this spring, now is the 6me to start. Here is a boat
spring6me prepara6on checklist I found on the BoatUS website:
Getting Started
If necessary, reinstall batteries. Top up lead acid batteries with distilled water. Fully charge batteries.
Clean, tighten electrical connections, especially terminals of battery cables. Coat battery terminals with insu-
lating film of grease, or apply protective battery terminal spray.
Open and close seacocks; handles should move freely. Hoses should be double-clamped with stainless-
steel hose clamps. Replace any that look rusted.
Inspect the raw-water intake strainer to be sure it has not cracked, and is clean and free of corrosion.
Make sure the strainer's top fits snugly.
Check running lights. Clean/tighten connections or replace bulbs to assure that all are operating proper-
ly.
Check VHF and GPS antenna connections by disconnecting and spraying with moisture-displacing lubri-
cant, then reconnect and test.
Look for indications of leaking at trim cylinders and hoses as well as at hydraulic steering pumps and
rams. Replace the O-ring or gasket if leaking.
Make sure the stuffing box or shaft seal is completely dry when the boat is at the dock.
Inspect portlights, hatches, and deck fittings for dirty or displaced caulking, water trails, dirt, and green
corrosion, any of which signals a leak that needs to be re-caulked.
Test bilge pump and high-water switches and alarms.
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, LPG and gasoline fume detector.
Check flares (expiration date) and fire extinguishers (charge), and replace/ recharge as necessary.
Check and service safety gear such as life jackets, and MOB gear.
17
Boats Ashore
Inspect props for dinging, pitting, and distortion. Make sure cotter pins are secure. Grip the prop and try
moving the shaft — if it's loose, the cutlass bearing may need to be replaced.
Replace plastic fittings near the waterline with bronze or Marelon.
Inspect the anodes on the shaft, outdrive, and trim tabs. Replace any that are close to half-deteriorated.
Check to make sure the rudderstock hasn't been bent.
After the boat is launched, be sure to inspect around the rudder and all thru-hulls for leaks, and check the
stuffing box while underway to make sure there is a steady drip.
Outdrives and Outboards
Check outdrive bellows for cracks and tears (look especially in the folds).
Check hydraulic trim fluid. If you didn't change it last fall, change it now.
Check lower-unit lube level. Creamy oil indicates water (and a bad seal). Many manufacturers recom-
mend changing the oil every year.
Engines and Related Systems
Flexible gasoline lines should say "USCG Approved, J1527." Replace any that don't.
Are fuel hoses supple, with no cracks, bulges, or soft spots? Do the lines smell like gasoline (wipe the
lines with a clean rag and then smell the rag)? Did you also use a rag to detect odors at connections?
Cooling hoses should fit snugly and be solidly clamped.
Replace any hose clamps that show signs of corrosion.
Replace fuel filters.
Clean or replace the air filter.
Change engine oil unless done in the fall (preferable). Check fluid levels: transmission, hydraulic steering
fluid, and coolant.
Check belts for tension and wear.
Check raw-water and freshwater pumps for seepage, which indicates a gasket needs to be replaced.
Replace raw-water impellers if they are more than a year old.
Examine exhaust manifolds for signs of corrosion and water seepage that indicate blockage. If you sus-
pect a problem, remove the manifold.
Replacing the (inexpensive) gaskets at the heat exchanger every year helps prevent corrosion at the
housing and also lets you look for gunk that can clog the stacks.
Test bilge blower and inspect hose.
Inspect outer jacket of cables for cracks and swelling, either of which indicates the cable must be re-
placed. Use waterproof grease at the ends.
18
Sailboat Rigging
Inspect swage fittings for rust and cracks. Running rigging should be supple and free of chafe.
Run a rag over stays and shrouds to find "fishhooks" that indicate the wire needs to be replaced.
Ensure that spreaders bisect the shrouds. Ends should be protected to prevent chafe.
Remove tape at turnbuckles and lubricate threads (preferably with Teflon).
Run a water hose over chain plates to check for leaks. Look for rust streaks inside and out. If necessary,
remove them and re-caulk.
