MUMBAIMumbai formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the second most populous city in the world, with a population of approximately 14 million. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. Mumbai is also the richest city in India. Mumbai was reshaped by the British and emerged as a significant trading town.

Welcome to Mumbai. Fifteen million people live in Mumbai - industrialists, film-stars, artists, workers, teachers and clerks - all living cheek-by-jowl in soaring skyscrapers and sprawling slums. They come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and speak over a dozen tongues, adding colour, flavour and texture to the Great Mumbai Melting Pot.

Meet Subodh

Subodh is eight years old. He comes from a city called Mumbai. Subodh lives in a flat with his mother and father.

Subodh’s father is an engineer.

Subodh’s grandparents live near by. Subodh goes to visit them every day after school. There is a yard whre he can ride his bike.

Subodh’s family live in a large, modern city called Mumbai. The streets are full of people and traffic. It is very busy and noisy.

Living in the city

In Mumbai, there are lots of market stalls, supermarkets and shops. Subodh’s family can buy all the things they need here.

Subodh’s family follow India’s main religion, Hinduism. Subodh prays every day at a shrine in his home. He looks forward to festivals, such as Diwali

Subodh’s family think it is important to worship God.

Subodh enjoys playing musical instruments. He plays the electric keyboard. His mother plays the sitar and his father plays the harmonium.

Subodh’s mother is a music teacher

India is very big. People have to travel long distances to visit their families or holy places. Trains and buses are very popular because most people do not own a car.
