52 27 SOTThe old name of paranaque is palanyag, which means “about to sale”. But actually several people have several interpretations. There were stories that say it was a mixture of the two sources of livelihood during that time. One is “palayan” or rice field and the 2nd is “paglalayag sa dagat” or to go to sail. There is also that very interesting tale about a Spaniard who road a kalesa and was asking the the rig driver to stop and he was saying “para na aqui, para na aqui”. And from there the term Paranaque grew VOPARA NA AQUI….That’s Spanish for “stop, Here’s where I get off!

VOIt’s not far-fetched a story as it seems since during 1583… a few decades after the Spanish landed…Paranaque was the nearest Malay settlement to the seat of Power which was Intramuros.

SOTIt can be surmised that there were a lot of Spaniards who settled in Parañaque, thus, a lot of mestizos lived in paranaque,-JUMP CUT- That presumably is because Parañaque although outside intramuros is also near Intramuros. Parañaque is in the suburbs of intramuros and plus the fact that in those years we have very nice beaches and there were a lot of beach front properties here in paranaque. VOBeach front properties very much like the coastal towns in Spain…VOOur colonizers must have felt very much at home… so at ease with the Philippines for as we all know… they stayed here for more than 400 years.

Saint Andrews VOAnother pre-requisite to every Spanish community was the presence of the church.VOParanaque is home to one of the Philippines’ oldest churches.

VOThe Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Parañaque is considered as one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. It was established in 1580 by the Augustinian Friars and still today it is the home of different types of people who primarily seek to make the Cathedral a place of welcome, beauty and worship.

It’s been more than 400 hundred years since the Parish of St. Andrews was established. It used to cater to the faithful that lived all the way in Cavite. Throughout the years, it has remained intact after two world wars that destroyed most of Manila’s old churches. When the Pope issued an instruction in May 1493 known as the ‘Intera Caetera’ which enjoins the Spanish rulers to spread the gospel to the inhabitants that they would come to rule, the Augustinians were one of

those orders who were tasked to spread Roman Catholicism and to evangelize in the lands they conquered.

When the Augustinian missionaries set foot on a fishing village near the sea, more than four hundred years ago, they taught the natives the importance of being one mind, one heart for God. That fishing village was a town called “Palanyag” (modern day Parañaque) from the word “Paglalayag” which means sailing.

In those days, the pioneer missionary in Parañaque was Rev. Fr. Juan de Orto, O.S.A.. He organized a thriving Christian community and started to administer the spiritual needs of the village folks in 1575. Five years later, Fr. Diego de Espinar was appointed Prior or Superior in the convent and established a mission house, the spiritual jurisdiction of which encompassed up to Kawit, Cavite.

It was on May 11, 1580 when the Conference of Chiefs of various Religious Orders declared Palanyag as an independent town. Thus this date the official foundation day the parish of St. Andrew the Apostle became known.

In fact, the only damage it sustained was from the Spanish-American war in 1907 when the warship MSS MURDOK shelled the side of the church that created a big gaping hole underneath the choir loft.

coastal town, it has a bountiful river running right through it.

SOTHistorically, Parañaque being strategically located was the site of the famous battle between limahong, the Spaniards as well as the natives of paranaque. This took place around the 1570’s and it happened on the eve on the feast of st Andrew. Records had it that there was an attempt by limahong to capture manila passing through the south but he was repelled valiantly by the natives and the Spaniards. Much of this happened in the area where the paranaque river meets manila bay and because of the number of men that were killed. As a result, they say that the sea became so bloody that it has been referred to in the history books as the red sea incident. VOThe site of the red sea incident is nearest the youngest of the three traditional towns in Paranaque called La Huerta.

The Chapel of San Nicolas is almost as old as the cathedral. It’s patron saint San Nicholas de Tolentino… is lovingly called Tata Kulas.

Ang Sunduan, ay hango sa salitang “sundo”. Noong 1876 sa pamumuno ni padre tiko bautista, nag tawag siya ng mga tao at sama sama silang nag organisa ng isang komite na mag aasikaso sa pista. Sa kanilang masigasig na paghahanda upang maging maganda at magara ang kapistahan ay ipinautos ng pari na ipasundo ang mga dalaga at binata. Ang mga kadalagahan noong araw dahil sa kanilang katangian na mahinhin ay hindi kaagad agad lumalabas ng bahay. Kailangan silang ipagpaalam sa kanilang mga magulang, at dahil dito ay naisip ng mga komite de festejos, na kailangan ang susundo sa mga dalaga ay banda na kasama ang mga binata. taga La Huerta ng maraming beses sa mga kastila ana ang ibig sabihin ay maraming kalokohan ay ang pinagmulan ng “karakol”. Dahil sa kahulugan nito tuwing karakul, maraming tao ang nagsusuot ng katawa-tawa o kalokohan. Ang karamihan sa mga tao ay naka suot na “costume” o iba’t ibang makukulay na kasuotan.

Ang kahulugang ito ay iba sa paniniwala sa mga ibang nayon tulad ng Cavite. Sa mga taga La huerta, dahil ang pagpupurisyon ay sa lupa ginagawa at hindi karaniwan ang mag prusisyon sa ilog papunta sa dagat kaya ito ay binansagang “kalokohan’.

Dahil na rin sa karamihan sa mga taga La huerta ay mangingisda at sa panahon ng magandang ani ay ipinuprusisuon si Tata Kulas de tolentino sa ilog ng Paranaque. Kasama sa tradisyong ito ay ang pag babato ng mga prutas tulad ng saging na saba, dalandan, at mais. Ito ay ibinabato habang nag napuprusisyon.

Dito sa eskinitang ito umaahon ang mga sumasama sa karakol. Pinapasan ang imahe ni Tata kulas at ito ay isinasayaw. Naging panata ito ng mga taga rito katulad ko na pinapasan at isinasayaw si Tata Kulas, at pagkatapos ay ililibot ito buong baryo ng la huerta. Dahil sa katagang “karakoles” o kalokohan ang kasiyahang ito at parang mardi gras na parang. Katulad halimbawa ng mga lalaking nag susuot babae para sila pag tawanan. Ito ay ginagawa tuwing pista sa buwan ng Mayo. VOJust like the rest of the Philippines when the Spanish arrived…La huerta was established as a bisita or a A group of Christian believers sometime in the 17-hundreds.

Historians have written that it was a 54-hectare garden with blossoming flowers and abundant fruit trees and where many young men and beautiful maidens used to rendezvous. VO

We went to the last remaining garden in the entire La Huerta… and that’s the Espiritu compound.

TOTOO BA ITO? VOThis compound is the only remaining garden in the whole of what was once the vast La Huerta.

VOConnecting La huerta to the next town of Don Galo is this bridge which runs right above the Paranaque River. VOWhen I was younger… I had this deep urge to jump off the bridge and take a swim…My mother wouldn’t let me.

VO I guess others seemed to have the same urge… since a few weeks after the thought entered my mind…the bridge was fenced. But this was not always the case.

VOResidents of La Huerta, Don Galo and San Dionisio— the three towns that maKe up the old Paranaque…all have fond memories of the river.

Do we really need to include this?

SOT Well definitely, we have taken what I call just baby steps to revive the Parañaque River. The save the paranaque river foundation itself is roughly ten years old and definitely we still have a long way to go you know how long it took for other great rivers in other places in the world before they could bring them back to life and so definitely we still have a long way to go. Especially now there is another threat to the river, which the building up of the mrt because there are plans to make the track pass along the river which we are opposing and so definitely we are determined in our efforts but it would take so much work and so much resources. VOThe main problem is that the river is connected to many bodies of water not under the jurisdiction of Paranaque.

MAYOR BERNABE SOT 15:08So bad.. ayun nga partly I said it… kasi all the water in Pasay alam mo pati yung Tripa De Galina, ends up in Pasay and Paranaque river yan yung tubig sa Villamore sa Pasay sa may banding Taguig from Las Pinas and also the water from Makati through the drainage, the drains they end up in Paranaque river tapos yung tubig ends up in Manila Bay that’s even worse because we get a lot of our seafood in Manila Bay so kaya kailangan dun palang ayusin na 15:54Yun… so the second item is maraming nakatirang squatter sa riverbanks ngayon ang ginaggwa naming dyan nakikipag negotiate kami sa mga land owners around this area of the river para malipat naming sila doon. Especially doon sa lupa na hindi na napapakinabangan kasi dinadaanan na halos ng mga eroplano. So wala ng pwedeng building doon, wala na masyadong titira, wala ng business so we’ll just convert that to a housing area. Very low cost housing area for this peopleVOIt’s a pity…since the Paranaque river is geographically the heart of old paranaque… running through the three oldest towns in the city.

Economics ng tao kasi people would settle in the river for transpo and for livelihood. So dyan nagsimula ang buhay, dyan nagsimula ang kultura, dyan nagsimula yung history. Ito Lauya number one tapos yung sotanghon with pusit and young garlic. Yan ang mga niluluto dito sa amin. Tapos isa pa yang puso ng saging with a sotanghon. Yung batotoy, yung shell food yung medyo maitim itim yung shell. Chaka yung Paksiw na pata na may puso ng saging yan ang mga ano ng Paranaque. Kasi depende sa lulutuin mo. Tapos pag malambot na, lalagyan mo yun ng mga gulay tapos sinasabay ko dito sa lauya para yung kamote, gabi, para lumambot, para sumama sa sabaw, para Malabo labo yung sabaw.. para maganda yung higop. Tapos ayun lalagyan mo ng saging na saba. Tapos ang gulay niya, kuchay. Pag walang kuchay, Yan ang nagbibigay ng flavor sa lauya. Pechay, reopolyo, ihuhulog ko. malambot na yung karne, ihuhulog ko yan. pagka hot cook. hahaluin ko na yung gulay para may konting green na medyo green na ganyan. Tapos titimplahin ko ng konting asin at panutsa. Hindi asukal, panutsa ang ginagamit ko dyan para matamis tamis. Konting asin para pumula, lalagyan mo ng atswete. Sauce, puwede patis. Para makamemos ka ng pagluto ng talong, sinasabay ko na sa pagluluto ng karne, pagluto na ang talong, hahanguin ko, palalamigin ko, aalisan ko ng balat. Mamash ko, tapos lalagyan ko ng pounded garlic, little vinegar, at patis ha. Wag ka magtitimpla ng asin, patis talaga. lady of Good Events which is enthroned in St. Andrews Church. VOParanaquenos from the three oldest towns in the city are staunch devotees of the Nuestra Buen Suceso…Which holds the distinction of being the the third oldest image of our lady in the Philippines.

3,50 SOT So, from the accounts, the image was brought to Paranaque by one of the earliest Augustinian missionaries. Paranaque as a convent was established in 1580 by the Augustinian fathers, and so it would be around that time that the image was brought to Paranaque. So, when they have settled in Paranaque the image was given to the Cofradia de la Sinta or the confraternity of the chord, which is an Augustinian devotion. And so they used this image for their religious processions their Saturday devotions. But at that time the image had no title it was just a plain image of the virgin mary.

After several years around 1615, when there were more baptized Catholics and there were a greater number of people attending church, the confraternity thought the image, had become very small for their purpose. And so they decided to have a new and a bigger one made. So this old small image was practically dumped in the sacristy, where it stayed for several years.

And in the accounts of Fray Nicolas de san pedro he described it as being placed among the refuse or the garbage in the sacristy until a native from barrio Don Galo named “Katig” saw the image in its pitiful state. So he mustered the courage to ask the hermano mayor if he could have the image and take care of it. The hermano mayor gave it to him not out of piety but in his desire to unclog the garbage in the sacristy.

Katig got the image and placed it in his hut, and even made a simple altar made of bamboo canes. There he would offer flowers and candles but through it all he never told anyone about the virgin for fear that they might take it back from him.

15 years later in 1625, katig fell seriously ill and so he called for priests to make his confession, the priest that time was

father juan de guevarra also an Augustinian. Fr. Juan de Guevarra went to katig’s hut and - as described in the accounts - as soon as he entered the hut of this poor man he saw the lovely image of the virgin. And quoting san pedro in his book “he fell in love” at first sight with the image. Father juan asked katig if he could have the image in exchange for a small amount. Which he told the old man, he could use for the masses and his healing. Katig agreed only on one condition, he can only take it upon his death and so he came to pass that around 8 days later katig died. And so Padre juan de guevarra went back to the hut of katig, and brought the image to his cell in the convent.

As soon as the image was placed inside his cell. Strange things began to happen like sounds of banging of doors. People began to see that the room is always be bathed in light. It was always very bright and singing voices from inside the room could be heard as if there was a choir of angels singing. And there would be this very very sweet scent that would emanate from the room. Little by little all these strange occurrences were noticed by the other brothers.

They discussed these things and decided to inform their superior about these strange happenings. Father Juan de Guevarra went to see Father Alonso de Metrida, the superior of the Augustinain order at that time in Intramuros. After hearing the strange happenings, father Alonso went to Paranaque, to witness it for himself.

He studied these strange occurrences and he ordered that the image be enshrined in the church. This took place in August 10, 1625, and this is now the date that we are using to celebrate her fiesta.

10,26 SOTBut the story did not end there. The image still had no name yet. So father Alonso asked the friars to write in strips of paper, the popular titles of the virgin mary in Europe at that time. These strips of paper were put in a jar, and they asked an 8 year old child to draw from 6 names and for 6 consecutive times, the name buen suceso was drawn. And so they said, ‘this is the name the lady wants to be called … Nuestra Señora Del

Buen Suceso’ or Our Lady of Good Events. One of the first who experienced the benefits of this majestic Lady was a renowned lady from the town of Malate called Dona Maria Amada. She suffered from intense colds which had caused so much contraction and spasm of the nerves that for two years she was crippled and could not even move nor walk. On the day that the devotion to this Sacred Image started, and because these two towns were so near each other the news came to her. She asked her relatives to bring her to the Virgin, the Most Holy Lady of Paranaque because she expected remedy of her ills.

She was rigged up to a hammock and was brought to St. Andrew Church and was placed at the altar steps from where she heard the mass of Our Lady. As soon as the mass ended she got up by herself and walked back to Malate after praying her novena. This event happened on the 15th of August 1625, 5 days after the image had been enthroned.

It was not only Dona Maria who was blessed. There was an old man named Pedro from the Society of Jesus whose face was turned by a strong wind. After hearing mass he felt his face turning back to normal. This happened after he rubbed his face with the oil of the lamp of Our Lady.

Another Indio named Miguel who was paralyzed but with two crutches, upon hearing about his Lady, went to the church to hear mass and after that in the presence of all, dropped his crutches and started to dance happily repeating incessantly his acknowledgement and thanksgiving to his benefactress who had freed him from the crutches that had accompanied him for more than ten yearsDuring the days of August 10 to 15, 1625 although a multitude of people who were sick and healed were no longer news that the people admired, there was one particular miracle that was so much remembered.

Since this town is located in salted sand and no potable water was present because the well went dry and there was not enough water to supply the needs of

those who came. The devotees would leave at once after their novena prayers so as not to suffer thirst.

It was at this time that the Most High, like a stroke of Moses, the sand of salted water produced very sweet water from nowhere. The thirsty people rushed to the seashore facing the church and wherever they dug they tasted the sweetest water, clear and healthful like it came from a fountain. In many places water flowed and formed furrows in the beach.

VOAfter learning that Our lady of Buen Suceso was showing miracles…The people of Paranaque began digging up the soil in Katig’s hut…Claiming that it too had healing properties. VOThe friars saw no truth to these allegations and to put an end to the rampage…The Chapel of Santa Monica was built on the site of Katig’s hut. Since the year after it was ordered that its feast day should be celebrated, on the first day all sailors of Fort Cavite declared Her - Nuestra Senora del Buen Suceso - as their Patron Saint.

Among the many whom the Mother of Sinners favored, the most prestigious was that of Juan Gomez, a Spanish sailor who was in a King’s vessel with many other officials. They were sailing the channel in Mindoro when he noticed a violent typhoon was approaching. Noting the danger the vessel was facing, they clamored to Our Lady of Buen Suceso of Paranaque for safety. Sailor Juan Gomez, in despair threw himself to the sea, First Sgt. Fernandez called to our Most Holy Virgin to look after the poor soul as they battered the waves that threatened them. First Sgt. Fernandez ordered his men to throw Juan Gomez a rope and told him to call on Our Lady of Buen Suceso, which he did seeing himself in the face of death.

When they thought they would become spoils of the sea, they found themselves in the port of Iloilo, clamoring with loud voices and declaring that it was Our Sovereign Lady who saved them from fatal drowning. After recovering, they

took to the sea happily and reached the shores of Paranaque on July 7, 1640 and in front of the Image they all gave thanks for the blessings they had received.

By 1626, this Lady was known everywhere in the islands and her temple was the most visited in all the islands from Ilocos, Cagayan, Visayas, Camarines, Calamianes, the people would come just to invoke the protection of this Majestic Lady. She was acclaimed with the titles of Universal Refuge of the Afflicted, Help of the Disconsolate, and Mother of all Consolation, because there was no Indio, Chinese or Spanish who did not find relief in his need when he called on her, and her mercy attended even to the most remote areas.

It was at the time when the temple had been finished that the enemy Cogsem Sangley decided to attack Manila with an innumerable army of Sangleys to enter through Cavite aiming to reach Paranaque. Having done so, they decided to throw their barges and sangleys into the water to establish their army in Dongalo. They came many times but could not capture the post they wanted. So they turned to the beach of Tambo, near Pasay, and from there they proceeded to attack the city leaving behind them Paranaque and proceeded with their battle until they were defeated by the Spaniards.

After many days there were peace, people asked some those from the army (of General Cogsem) why they were not able to take port in Paranaque, they answered that their general had really wanted to put up his tents in Paranaque but they were never able to do it because of a very beautiful, dark and small lady who hindered the vessels and would throw sand to blind the eyes of those who were propelling it. And it is still said, that on the Saturday following the attack they discovered that the vestments of this image were heavy with sand. Don Alfonso, attested that this was true and was witness to these marvels.

This and many other marvels were experienced and received from this Majestic Lady. The years 1664, 65, and 66 were the greatest that this most benign Lady had done, and it was that the whole Philippine Islands was infested

by that universal pestilence, such that, from each town, without exception, six or ten or twelve men or women would die.

The lash of Divine Justice was experienced in these Islands governed by the Governor and Captain Don Diego Salcedo, of such magnitude that many towns were deserted, without houses and in some without a single person left alive to retain the pestilence.

When the contagiousness of the epidemic was beginning to be felt in this town, and after seeing the effects of the epidemic in neighboring and distant towns, the townspeople discussed about a possible solution. They all united as one, men and women, leaders and “timawas”, went to the frior Fr. Francisco Martinez, - who was then in this town - to ask that the image be given to them so they could bring Her to the visitas and in processions and prayers.

The Father Superior condescended happily with the condition that only for one night she would sleep outside her altar. With this concession, the people decided not to delay his good will and so they arranged a procession on November 25, 1664.They brought her to the Barrios of Palanyag with great joy, happiness, feast and fireworks, and the Rev. Fr. Prior and his companion by the side of Our Lady they said the litanies against the pestilence. And by the mercy of the Most Holy Mary, on that same day, all those who were touched with the pestilence and malignant fever got up well and accompanied the procession until the church and since then on there was not a single death due to the pestilence and while all the other towns were mourning their misfortune, Paranaque was celebrating their good fortune for having such a good protector and powerful Patroness who delivered them from so much misfortune.

After that medyo kasama ako sa directing staff. Actually I was not thinking of changing but If I could only do it I would really I would like to go back in time to see how things are how they were before how my ancestors lived how well they got a long with each other how deeply rooted is their fate that’s one thing I would like to go back to but of course if I had the power to change things in the current situations how I wish people would be more mindful about their heritage that would have a greater consciousness of their past so that they would be an even prouder people. And also it does not stop there in knowing in relishing what they have but I think the more important thing is the desire to help preserve whatever they have so I think if I had those powers I d like more people to be appreciative of our of the heritage that is truly paranaque, and the next is how I wish we could all hold hands set aside politics, set aside bickering, and really bring back the essence –jump cut- Because that’s the essence, it all begins and ends there, your love for your birth place.
