Where Eagles Soar Welcome back! The return to school is always a mix of emotions: happiness, worries, sadness and joy all wrapped up into all of our brains. This year one of our school goals is on Self Awareness and being mindful (also known as self regulated) is an important skill to practice at any age! This is more than taking a breathing break (which can help) but more making sure we are in the right state for learning. Our starting point this year is focusing on friendship - including a club led by Mr McMaster to help model and encourage good manners and treating others the way we wish we were treated. You may also notice a purple banner at our main entrance, that is a Legacy School banner from the Gord Downie - Chanie Wenjack foundation acknowledging the work Ms Dimond and Mr Ball did last year creating a performance con- nected to learnings about Residential Schools. We also have a bike park being installed in the back of our field to help support the Rippers mountain bike riding club, which includes many of our teachers - and this year we are including grade 2 riders as we have two riding groups! Just need a permission form and a helmet (yep - we have some bikes available!) Thanks to Mrs Carson, Mrs Payne and Mrs Crookshank for helping organize the program, and looking forward to seeing other staff who like to ride as well (Mr Aasen, Ms Gesell, Ms Dimond and I’m probably forgetting some)! Our outdoor leaning goal benefits from programs like this, our outdoor classroom and our newly installed Mud Kitchen in our playground area! Thanks to the many vol- unteers who make these happen! I love how involved the staff and community is at Edgehill. We have amazing participation for events such as Terry Fox runs, and Remembrance Day activities and of course, our music opportunities! One thing I learned last year, Edgehill is an amazing learning community where there is always something (or somethingS) going on! Looking forward to a great year! Where Eagles Soar

Welcome back!

The return to school is always a mix of emotions: happiness, worries, sadness and joy all wrapped up into all of our

brains. This year one of our school goals is on Self Awareness and being mindful (also known as self regulated) is an

important skill to practice at any age! This is more than taking a breathing break (which can help) but more making

sure we are in the right state for learning. Our starting point this year is focusing on friendship - including a club led by

Mr McMaster to help model and encourage good manners and treating others the way we wish we were treated.

You may also notice a purple banner at our main entrance, that is a Legacy School banner from the Gord Downie -

Chanie Wenjack foundation acknowledging the work Ms Dimond and Mr Ball did last year creating a performance con-

nected to learnings about Residential Schools.

We also have a bike park being installed in the back of our field to help support the Rippers mountain bike riding club,

which includes many of our teachers - and this year we are including grade 2 riders as we have two riding groups! Just

need a permission form and a helmet (yep - we have some bikes available!) Thanks to Mrs Carson, Mrs Payne and Mrs

Crookshank for helping organize the program, and looking forward to seeing other staff who like to ride as well (Mr

Aasen, Ms Gesell, Ms Dimond and I’m probably forgetting some)! Our outdoor leaning goal benefits from programs

like this, our outdoor classroom and our newly installed Mud Kitchen in our playground area! Thanks to the many vol-

unteers who make these happen!

I love how involved the staff and community is at Edgehill. We have amazing participation for events such as Terry Fox

runs, and Remembrance Day activities and of course, our music opportunities! One thing I learned last year, Edgehill is

an amazing learning community where there is always something (or somethingS) going

on!

Looking forward to a great year!

M e e t t h e Te a c h e r We invite all parents and guardians to join us Wednesday, September 11th from 6-7 pm for our annual meet the teacher event! We will begin our evening in the classrooms. Children may take their parents on a tour of the school and can check in with the classroom teacher. Some teachers may have a more formal presentation about their classroom structures and expectations, so please check in with your child’s teacher. Then, everyone will gather in the gym for the latter portion of the evening to meet some of our other staff, find out some school-related information, and to learn about many exciting activities that Edgehill offers. This year we are having a corn roast! We look forward to seeing everyone!

Calling all Bakers and Muffin Makers

Every morning we put out muffins and fruit (if available) so hungry kids can have a snack.

Many students arrive without having breakfast, and some just need a little

something extra! Having a little snack availa-ble for them is so important and it really

makes a difference in the classroom.

This year we are looking for a parent volun-teer to organize the program—this means

gathering a list of willing bakers and calling/emailing them when we are low/out.

Thank you so much to Katie Alescio who has coordinated this program in the past!

If you are able to donate some muffins, please bring them to the office!

***Muffins must be nut free, as we are a peanut/nut free school.***

Student Forms Package

At the end of the week we will be sending home a

package with the following forms:

Student Verification Form

Medical Information Form

Blanket Permission Form

Release of Information

Acceptable Use Forms

Reverse Consent Form for our Fruit and Vegetable

Program (BCFVP)

These are very important forms that must be reviewed,

signed and returned. It is extremely important for the

office to have the most up-to-date contact and medical

information. This can be changed at anytime throughout

the year by contacting the office. Thank you!

Edgehill students will be making

Apple Juice at the school this fall.

We will need donated Apples,

and volunteer helpers too.

If you have apples and/or time to

share, please contact Mr. Landy!

Due to some severe allergies

in the school...

Edgehill Rippers Mountain Bike Club 2019-2020

Every Tuesday in September, and again from the end of Spring Break to June, come rain,

snow or shine, people gather at Edgehill Elementary to ride their bikes! Many of our rides

take place in the area surrounding our school, but some do require transportation to trails

a bit farther abroad. Our focus is Cross-Country (XC) trail riding. We try our best to

stick to a general 3:00-5:00 p.m. timeframe. For more information please see Mrs. Payne or

Mrs. Carson.

In addition to our Grade 4-7 riders, we wish to invite all FUTURE Edgehill Rippers! Our brand-new Pre-Ripper

After-School Mountain Biking Skills Sessions will start Tuesday, September 10, for any interested students

in Grades 2 and 3! These sessions will be run by Mrs. Payne and Mrs. Crookshank, both graduates of the

Sprockids Instructional Leader Program.

Sessions for Pre-Rippers will run on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00 pm

Sessions for Rippers will run on Tuesdays from 3:00-5:00 pm

Sept. 10 – Oct. 1, inclusive.

We will then resume mountain biking club after Spring Break. Pre-Rippers who are able to demonstrate strong

riding skills will be invited to join the Rippers’ Beginner group in the Spring.

ABSENCES AND LATES

Planning on being away? Alarm Clock went off late? Not feeling well enough for school

today? It happens! But please let us know! Email your child(s) teacher and Mr. Landy or

call the school @ 604-485-6164.

If we record a student absence without hearing from a parent/guardian,

an email will be sent to ensure the child is safe.

In addition, if your child(ren) do come to school late, please have them check in at the

office! Thank you!

Be Bear Aware:

As there have been several reports and sightings of bears in Powell River, and some too close for comfort,

we want to remind everyone about Bear Safety.

If the school bell rings 3 times, that means “GET INSIDE THE SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY”

IF YOU SEE A BEAR:

If the Bear Does NOT Approach:

If spotted in the distance, do not approach the bear. Make a wide detour or leave the area immediately. Report your sighting to Conservation at the first opportunity.

If you are at close range, do not approach the bear. Remain calm, keep it in view. Avoid direct eye contact. Move away without running. Report the sighting to Conservation.

If the Bear DOES Approach:

If the bear is standing up, it is usually trying to identify you. Talk softly so it knows what you are. If it is snap-ping its jaws, lowering its head, flattening its ears, growling or making ‘woofing’ sounds, it is displaying ag-gression.

Do not run unless you are very close to a secure place. Move away, keeping it in view. Avoid direct eye con-tact. Dropping your pack or an object may distract it to give you more time.

If the Bear Attacks:

Your response depends on the species and whether the bear is being defensive or offensive. Bears some-times bluff their way out of a confrontation by charging then turning away at the last moment. Generally, the response is to do nothing to threaten or further arouse the bear. While fighting back usually increases the intensity of an attack, it may cause the bear to leave. Each incident is unique and the following are offered as guidelines only to deal with an unpredictable animal and complex situation:

Head Lice

Head lice do not carry disease and do not have anything to do with cleanliness. The only harmful effect from head lice is the way

children and adults react. Negative reactions to head lice can harm children’s self-esteem and result in their isolation from others.

How to check your child’s head on a regular basis:

STEP 1 Find a comfortable, well-lit spot

STEP 2: Check the hair from the scalp to the end of the hair strand. First, look at the hair at the back of the neck, behind the ears and above the fore-head. Then, check the rest of the head.

STEP 3: You are looking for live lice and/or nits (eggs). Live or viable nits are attached to the hair very close to the scalp, within 6mm or ¼ inch. Nits that are more than 6 mm or ¼ inch away from the scalp are ‘empty’ egg shells. Nits are white to light brown in colour and may be confused with dandruff. Nits are firmly attached to the hair and do not move unless you pull them off the hair strand.

STEP 4: If you find a louse or viable nit, check all household members. Treat only those who have lice or viable nits, with a treatment from the pharma-cists. Your child may return to school the next day after the first treatment. Repeat treatment in 7-10 days.

STEP 5: Let the school know if your child has head lice or nits.

Remember: Make weekly head checks part of your home routine. Scratching and itching of the scalp may be a sign of head lice (but not always). If your child has long hair, keep it tied back.

For further information about head lice please visit: https://www.healthlinkbc.ca/healthlinkbc-files/head-lice
