WHERE DOES ELECTRICITY FOR MY HOUSE COME
FROM??
By Clare Jenkin
WELL, OUT WITH IT!!
Usually, energy for a normal household is produced
by burning fossil fuels such as; coal or natural gases
and oils. Though, with recent study it shows that
some day if we keep burning fossil fuels, pollution in
cities and surrounding area’s will increase and we
will someday run out of the fuels.
RENEWABLE ENERGY
During the last few years people have discovered
nature’s beauty’s can produce energy, this sort of
power is called renewable energy. E.g. The sun’s
rays can be used to generated energy to solar panels
that produce electricity or wind turbines use the
strength of the wind to turn the turbine. These
renewable energy sources don’t produce any
pollution like burning fossil fuels do.
MY HOUSE’S ELECTRICITY
At my dad’s house we are installing solar panels.
This will keep pollution down and after the
installation of the solar panels the power bill should
lessen by heaps.
At mum’s she rents a house. The landlord hasn’t got
any solar panels installed or has a wind turbine to
power the house. So mum has to pay for electricity
burnt from fossil fuels.
HYDRO ENERGY
Hydro energy is produced by the power of moving
water. Even many, many years ago people used the
power of water. Wheat mills used the water to turn
the turbine that grinds the grains. Here is a
diagram:

HOW DOES HYDRO POWER BECOME ELECTRICITY???
HOW DOES HYDRO POWER BECOME ELECTRICITY???
In its simplest form, electricity is generated by rotating a magnet
inside a wire coil. In a power station, this process is enhanced;
the magnet is an electro-magnet or “rotor” spinning inside the
fixed coils or “stator” of the generator. Each generator is
mounted on a vertical shaft above the turbine and water is used
to drive the turbine, which operates the generator. Transformers
boost generated voltage to a level that can be economically
transmitted over long distances by transmission lines to the
towns and cities of eastern mainland Australia.
THAT’S ALL FOLKS!!
