It gets convoluted from here, and you can play NZQA jargon bingo. Here are my understanding of the approval steps from here (I’ve had these steps checked by NZQA so are probably right). Remember that the Qualification describes the graduate profile, learning outcomes etc, and the Programme is a coherent set of courses to meet that qualification. We need: a) A listed qualification (ie the outcome of the TRoQ/MRoQ). The qualifications together are referred to as a Landscape of Qualifications. · Note: on-going maintenance of the Landscape of Qualifications will be undertaken by a Qualification Developer, this may involve CITRENZ but whether it does is not material for the approval process. · There are 14 Qualifications on the IT Landscape of Qualifications that are about to be sent out for final consultation before listing. b) An approved programme, a coherent set of courses to meet each qualification. · CITRENZ anticipates at least 14 programmes in its suite, one for each qualification, possibly more to allow for different contexts. c) For CITRENZ to be the programme owner, this ownership must also be approved. · Programme owner approval happens concurrently with the programme approval application. · I am seeking assurance from NZQA that CITRENZ is eligible for programme ownership. d) Each provider is accredited by NZQA to deliver a programme. · Programme approval and provider accreditation is best done at the same time. · Each provider accreditation is a separate document that requires a MOA from the programme owner. · Note that this MOA can’t be revoked, concerns over quality are to be addressed through notification to NZQA through consistency arrangements (it is uncertain what happens if an institution leaves the collaboration). e) Consistency arrangements describe the process of ensuring on-going alignment of the taught programmes to the programme, and the programme to the qualification. · Consistency relationships where there is a split between programme owner and providers are not yet clear. · NZQA has promised clarity around this “within weeks” but say as it describes process rather than curriculum structure, it should not hinder curriculum development. The IT Qualifications are almost out for final con- sultation, probably to be submitted late August. During this period CITRENZ needs to develop the CITRENZ Suite of Programmes. This urgency is both to make them available for accreditation as soon as possible, and to provide a reality check on the Qualifications. Over the next few weeks CITRENZ is holding a series of working group and board meetings scheduled to frame and develop the CITRENZ Suite of Programmes (aka the new “blue book”). These will be at a “strawman” stage by the end of July.

Where are we with TRoQ?Nearly there, look out for intense work over the next months.

We need:a) A listed qualification (ie the outcome of theTRoQ/MRoQ). The qualifications together are referred to as a Landscape of Qualifications. · Note: on-going maintenance of the Landscape ofQualifications will be undertaken by a Qualification Developer, this may involve CITRENZ but whether it does is not material for the approval process.· There are 14 Qualifications on the IT Landscapeof Qualifications that are about to be sent out for final consultation before listing. b) An approved programme, a coherent set ofcourses to meet each qualification. · CITRENZ anticipates at least 14 programmes inits suite, one for each qualification, possibly more to allow for different contexts.c) For CITRENZ to be the programme owner, thisownership must also be approved.· Programme owner approval happens

so stay tuned for an announcement closer to the October conference. Events are in train!

Following on from a visit to New Zealand from the Seoul Accord signatory countries in June, IITP has announced that the ICT-related Degree Accredita-tion programme is kicking off from this month.

Degree Accreditation involves a panel visit of academics and industry representatives, and formal assessment of Bachelor Degree programmes against international standards. Accreditation ensures that New Zealand degrees are rec-ognised around the world (through the multilateral cross-recognition agreement called the Seoul Accord) and recognises the degree programmes that best prepare students for a career in the IT industry.

Heads of School should receive an invitation to participate in the Pilot in the next few days. The Pilot will include two ITPs alongside two University Computer Science and two Information Systems institutions.

The programme has been a long time coming, and follows consultation and discussions in the sector over several years. IITP is running the programme independently (and has to, to meet Seoul Accord requirements) but CITRENZ and individual institutions have been consulted throughout the process to date.

Otago University’s Prof Steve MacDonell will be Chairing the IITP Accreditation Board, with nom-inations opening soon for the rest of the Board positions. Murray Wills will be the Visit Manager for the Pilot accreditation visits. Murray is well known to CITRENZ having been Weltec Head of School previously, and currently serving on the CITRENZ Board. On the 31st July and 1st August we are holding a 2-day Post-TRoQ IT programmes implementation workshop to review the CITRENZ programme development. The purpose of this 2-day workshop is:1. To review the strawman versions of CITRENZSuite of IT Qualifications. · Will they work for you? What do we need to do tomake the programmes better?· What choices will they mean for you?· How will they integrate into your otherprogrammes? (both discipline and level)· Do we have any major feedback on theQualifications themselves (eg if we can’t make a programme work).2. To agree on a collaborative accreditationprocess.3. To agree on an implementation process.

The draft programmes should be ready a few days before the workshop. We are hoping to have representation from all CITRENZ member/associ-ate institutions. We need people who have both the overview and a handle on the detail – so HoDs and/or programme manager levels.

CITRENZ is able to pay for food and accommodation, but not flights. Please confirm attendance to Viv.Who: HoDs and/or programme managers. What: Post-TRoQ IT programmes implementation workshopWhen: 31st July and 1st AugustWhere: Brentwood Wellington

Staff of the Faculty of Business and Information Technology are looking forward to moving into the new state of the art campus in Manukau for Semester two 2014.

The building features a mix of open and closed learning spaces over a number of levels, a library, and a 250 seat combined performing arts/lecture theatre – a first for a NZ tertiary institution. This will be the venue for a forthcoming leader’s debate prior to the general election. And all of this is built right over the new Manukau rail station!

Of particular interest to local IT staff are the state of the art dedicated network and multimedia labs that will complement the BYOD approach to learning.

The IT team are also keen for out of town colleagues to view the new campus and to relate their experiences in the new VDI environment,

New excellence in IT Awards

MIT were unable to separate two deserving recipients for the 2014 CITRENZ Award for Academic Excellence so have awarded it jointly to Adam Blair (left ) and Aaron Oxenham.

Both students enrolled in the DipIS (L6) in Semester one 2012 as part of the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) two year Diploma study programme. They were both able to RPL ten degree courses enabling them to complete not only the requirements for a DipIS (L6), but also the requirements for the BIS within that two year timeframe.

The Institute of IT Professionals, in partnership with 9 other IT associations, have anounced the establishment of the New Zealand Excellence in IT Awards with nominations now open.

The Excellence in IT Awards are designed to recognise the real people behind IT and software and the individuals and teams that make IT work.

The Awards are a collaboration of the Institute of IT Professionals with nine other IT associations including CITRENZ, NZRise, the Project Manage-ment Institute of NZ, the NZ Software Association, InternetNZ, Health Informatics NZ, GOVIS, the Computer Science Association of NZ and the NZ Open Source Society.

IITP chief executive Paul Matthews today said “While existing awards programmes do an excel-lent job of recognising the companies and vendors who do great work, the Excellence Awards are focused squarely at the unsung heroes and champions of our sector.”
