When you are reading and a character says or does something that’s opposite (contradicts) of what you
expect them to do…
“Why is the character doing that?”
• The answer could help you make a PREDICTION…
• Or make an INFERENCE about the plot and conflict.
You should and ask yourself:
When you are reading and suddenly a character
realizes, understands, or finally figures out
something…
“How may this change things?” • If the character figures out a problem, you probably just learned about the CONFLICT.
• If the character understood a LIFE LESSON, you probably just learned something about the THEME.
You should and ask yourself:
When you are reading and the character asks himself or herself a very
difficult question…
“What does this question make me wonder about?”
• The answer may tell you about the conflict of the story…
• Or they might FORESHADOW what will happen later in the story.
You should and ask yourself:
When you are reading and a character (probably
older and wiser) takes the main character aside and
gives serious advice…
“What is the life lesson and how may it affect the character?”
• The lesson is probably the THEME of the story.
