Family Food History/Culture Recipe Assignment

Overview:Each student will create a document about a family recipe, discover its history, and conduct an interview with a family member to collect information about their family origins and their family food traditions. This project is in place of a test for this unit and should be very neatly done and not just be answers on a piece of paper. (Someone reading it should not have to refer back to this assignment to know what your answers mean). You may write using paragraphs, questions/answers, or answers in question format.

Things you need: A family recipe Someone to talk to about the recipe (face-to-face, email, or phone) VERY neat handwriting, spelling and punctuation OR use a computer (If I can’t read it I

can’t grade it)o We will have computer access on _______________ and ________________

Written in paragraphs not just answers to questions. Ideas for project include: Word Document, Poster, Booklet, or run an idea by Ms. Pilant Due: ____________________________________

Things to include:1. What is the recipe you will write about? 2. Where did your family originate (where did they originally come from)? How did your

family come to be in Michigan? Unless you are 100% native American your family is not FROM Michigan originally.

3. Describe a memory you have of the food/recipe being prepared or eaten.4. Research (and include source) for a history of the recipe/food. (i.e. Quiche originated in

the 16th century in ancient Rome…www.foodtimeline.org).5. Are the ingredients for your recipe grown in Michigan? If not, where do they come

from? (ie. carrots are grown in Michigan, bananas are from tropical climates, often Costa Rica)

6. Come up with 5 interview questions to ask someone in your family who is familiar with the origins of your recipe. (Use questions that will help you with your project!)

holidays, traditions, etc.)

I will be grading you on:

Requirement Check Yourself

Self-Grade (A, B, C, D, E)

1. Recipe name2. Michigan story/how we got here3. Memory of the food4. History of the food (cite your

source)5. Michigan grown? Or where did

ingredients come from.6. 5 interview questions7. Recipe in standard format8. Picture of the food9. Importance of recipe to my family Neatness of project Written in paragraphs or with

questions/answers.Final Grade you would give yourself ---------------------

Example. If you are answering “Where did your family originate (where did they originally come from)?” Answering with one word “Germany” would not meet the requirements.

An answer like this would: “My family came to the United States from Germany in 1954. They moved to Michigan because they had to leave their home during World War II and were refugees in West Germany. They came to Marlette Michigan to start a new life.” You may have less detail as some families have been here a long time! But find out what you can. So you could say “they moved here from Texas sometime in the 30s because Grandpa got a job working at GM. We don’t know exactly where they came from before Texas that but Grandpa told me that the family came from France during the revolutionary war.”

But, remember--unless you are 100% Native American your family did not originate in Michigan or the USA.
