In 1992, the U.S. Department of Labor notified North Carolina Officials they had a deadline of 90 days to improve enforcement or federal OSHA would take over.

The North Carolina General Assemblypassed 14 new worker safety laws as a result, including provision of a system whereby workers could report violations without fear of job loss.

The North Carolina Department of Labor more than doubled their number of Inspectors.

The Charlotte Regional Safety and Health School and Conference was born out of this new emphasis on North Carolina worker safety and established 25 years ago.
