Welcome to the EVSC News and Weather team! But before you can broadcast you have to

know your stuff. Will you be ready to inform and protect the people of your area when

disaster strikes?

The people of the area want to be informed with the important information that will protect them when disaster strikes. Your task is to…

•Research•Organize •Write•Film•Produce

A newscast of a weather event or natural disaster.

The Process

1. First you'll be assigned to a team of 4 students. Groups will be assigned in the beginning of the project.

2. As a group, choose a weather or natural disaster that you will be focusing on during this project. This is the weather event that you will learning about when doing your newscast.

3. On your own, fill out the K and W sections of the KWL chart of all the information that you know about the natural disaster you and your group have chosen. After you have done this. Come together and discuss all the things that you have put in these sections.

4. After you have filled out your K and W sections go back to the Weather or disaster slide and take notes on your disaster. In bullet or outline form individually. Once you have finished this come together to discuss your notes.

5. Use the Weather Log worksheet to log the weather for the next week. You can access the weather and other weather information at The Weather Channel website.

6. Once you have done your KWL chart, come together and each group member will choose a role to play.

• Newscaster• Rescue Worker• Meteorologist• Storm chaser

7. Once you have chosen your job, click on your job. Use the Cornell note taking method to take notes on the websites listed under your job. After you have taken notes, come together as a group and discuss your notes you have taken. This information will help you complete your newscast.

8. After you have discussed your notes as a group, bring back the KWL chart that you completed in step 4 and fill out the L section.

9. Depending on your job you will be performing a certain job in your newscast. Take a look at some examples at some real life broadcasts in your job area. Take note of some of the words and phrases they use during the newscast. This will help you with the language of your newscast.

• Newscaster- Anchor• Rescue worker- Safety Specialist • Meteorologist- Weather Reporter• Storm Chaser- Field Reporter

10. Once you have watched the examples, start to write the script for the newscast. Make sure you have a part for everyone in your group. Each group member should talk about his or her specialty area during the newscast.

11. When you are writing your script make sure you include the following things• Meteorologist

• Temperature• Precipitation type and amount• Satellite weather map

• Storm Chaser• Characteristics of the storm/disaster

• Rescue Worker• Safety tips• Damage report

• Anchor• Other short news story relevant to the area

12.Once you are done writing your script and have all the components you are ready to practice and present your newscast.

13.After you and your group have presented your newscast you have completed this webquest! Congratulations!

Evaluation

When putting together your newscast make sure you are checking the rubric to make sure you can make the best newscast for the people of your area.

Its time to air your broadcast! Your newscast informed the people of your area about safety and helped them protect themselves from the disaster. You learned about how a storm is made what weather conditions create them.

Depending on the dynamic of your classroom you may want to change the groups and have them pick their own groups.

If you feel your students are not ready for film, this is also applicable to be an in class presentation, and/or powerpoint

When students are choosing a disaster have them choose from the following-

• Hurricane• Tornado• Earthquake• Thunder and Lighting storm• Blizzard• Flooding/ Flash Flooding• Tsunami• Volcano Eruptions (if you like)
