The international Made in Food Waste research study, produced by the International Matrec Observatory in partnership with the Chile University of Architecture and Design, presents examples of how food waste can become a resource for new industrial products.

Coffee grounds, nutshells, apple and orange peel, kiwi skins, casein from milk, rice husks and fish scales are just some of the waste food products now being processed and used as a resource to create materials for furnishing products, gifts, clothes, footwear, packaging and accessories. In recent years a large number of companies have undertaken research and development into the production of materials starting from food waste products, which in many cases identify the food’s specificity and territoriality, thus giving the material an increased environmental and social value. Thanks also to creativity and technology, many of these materials have been distributed internationally to be used by big names in fashion and furniture to make expensive items of clothing.

When foods become materials

| Issue #37 | November 11th 2015

This is just the start of the process and it promises to lead to an increase in the value of all kinds of waste food products: for example coffee grounds, properly treated and processed, can be turned into lamps, vases, bowls, cups and thread and yarn for clothing fabrics, while sugar, tea leaves, waste rice, mycelium from mushrooms and peanut shells are other materials that represent resources used to make bowls, vases, shoes and household items. Other food waste products are used as natural dyes for textiles and leathers or coatings and surface treatments for furniture and chairs. These are just some of the examples that emerged from the international Made in Food Waste research study, produced by the International Matrec Observatory in partnership with the Chile University of Architecture and Design, to present examples of how food waste can become a resource for new industrial products. It is a priority, and also ethically correct, to take immediate action aimed at reducing food waste on account of the unequal distribution of food in different areas of the globe without commercial interests prevailing at the expense of basic needs.

Tom Ford Eyewear for 007

Designer Wes Gordon from New York City has collaborated with Silhouette on the creation of a limited edition of Wes Gordon eyewear for Silhouette. Titan Minimal Art is the Silhouette model that has been revisited by the designer. The filters of these sunglasses are made in one piece starting from a single circular lens, the edges of which are smoothed to thinness. The contrast between the two parts of the lens - polished in the center and with a satin finish at the edge - is emphasized by a fine line of color hand painted with a needle. An innovative technique in eyewear which Silhouette debuts in this collection. Wes Gordon for Silhouette will be available in 1000 stores starting from January 2016.

Daniel Craig wears Tom Ford Eyewear in his role as the legendary James Bond, secret agent 007, in the movie Spectre on worldwide release on 6 November. Directed by Sam Mendes and produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for Eon Production, it is the twenty-fourth movie in the Bond series. The models worn by Daniel Craig in the movie are Snowdon (TF237), with a decisive, vintage shape, a thick frame and an elegant “T” on the temples, and Henry (TF248), whose Fifties style is evoked by a characteristic front created by the harmonious union of a top part in fine acetate and a lower part in metal.

WestGroupe, a leader in the Canadian eyewear industry, has appointed French distributor LVD Consulting as its distributor for their Fysh UK and Evatik brands in France. With over 30 years’ experience in the eyewear industry, Daniel Louveau – owner of LVD Consulting – has been closely associated with many prestigious French eyewear brands such as Lafont and Alain Mikli. He has also been instrumental in the launch of the Beausoleil and Face à Face brands in France. “This strategic partnership will strengthen our position and business in France. Daniel is extremely talented and proactive and we are really proud to work with him”, said WestGroupe President, Michael Suliteanu. “I am delighted to be partnering with a market leader such as WestGroupe and look forward to creating a strong proposition for their Fysh UK and Evatik brands”, added Daniel Louveau.

Feeling safe is now possible thanks to Coex®, the first 100% natural fiber that’s totally non-flammable. It is the outcome of years of study and research carried out by two Italian companies that have been operating in the textile sector for fifty years: Zanolo and Torcitura Padana. Coex® is a cellulose-based, all-vegetable fiber – the most common biopolymer in nature - that is comfortable, recyclable and non-allergic. In addition to the extraordinary comfort and the invaluable aesthetic effect of a fabric like linen or cotton, it does not burn, drip, emit harmful fumes like dioxin and will resist the highest temperatures. Thanks to the contribution of completely natural elements, it is nature itself that raises a real barrier against fire with Coex®.

Non-flammable innovation

The two artists who worked behind the scenes on Malloni’s Fall/Winter 2015/16 collection are Italian: photographer Emilio Tini and stylist Simone Guidarelli. The campaign conveys the atelier’s new vision in an asymmetric underground story, at times hipster or surprisingly bon-ton and sensitive to a woman’s shape.Even the choice of location – Milan’s Triennale, the first Italian museum dedicated to design – contextualizes the story in an important example of Italian manufacture. Stairways, empty surfaces, assemblies, colors, transparencies provide the backdrop for Malloni’s nonconformist charm.

Directed by Albert Kriemler, the Spring/Summer 2016 collection by Swiss brand Akris was presented last month in Paris in collaboration with renowned Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. Kriemler explained that, “there are architects whose vision is very close to fashion design – in fact it is about creating something that places the body in relation to the space surrounding it, enabling it to live comfortably. Sou is an architect who understands that we have other senses in addition to pure sight”. The backdrop was a copy of House N by Fujimoto which stood out above the runway. All the models wore eyeglasses with mirrored lenses similar to those worn by the architect himself.

After 72 years, Rome’s Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, better known as the Colosseo Quadrato (square colosseum), has reopened its doors to host the headquarters of Fendi. The Roman fashion brand has transferred all its offices – from creativity to the fur workshop – to the Fascist-era building built by Giovanni Guerrini for the World Exhibition of 1942. The inauguration was held on 22 October with a live transmission of “Poesia di Luce”, the spectacular lighting installation conceived by artist and designer Mario Nanni. Architectural lighting illuminated the columns with increasing gradations and intensity to create a new perspective, while a deep red rising sun marked the passage of time by becoming white at noon. Until 7 March 2016, the Colosseo Quadrato will be open also to the public with the exhibition “Una Nuova Roma. L’Eur e il Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana” (A new Rome. The Eur and the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana) about the history of the monument.
